As interesting as it is that he's become the first colored president, it's only been a few weeks, and the media and other things are covering them like they're celebrities. Especially Barack's family and the so-called 'Obama girls'.
Picking out a dog seemed to be a pretty big deal, as it had to match his personality, goals, etc. Is rescuing an abandoned dog not enough? (Though if someone could tell me why presidents like Bush chose their dog to match personalities or whatever, then disregard that statement). I can't seem to browse google news without something advertising for me to look into Mrs. Obama's education history. And someone even went as far as making dolls of the 'Obama girls', with matching names (though the dolls' names were changed, as requested by the Obama girls themselves).
So yeah, while Barack's the first colored president and all, it's still time that we stop making such a huge deal about him and his family.
Thoughts?

Stop watching the media.
Oh look problem solved.

Its not simply that he is black, but that it is a young family living in the White House now.
His wife is attractive and young, so not only is the old fart media talking about policy, but the hip young celebrity gossip magazines are looking at her. Seeing what she wears, her style.
Their girls are young. They are going to pretty much grow up in the public eye. Parents of young children will be seeing what type of parents the Obamas are. Children will be interested in the girls too, since they'll be the same age.
The first family is pretty much catering to all of the major demographics of viewers. So obviously, to keep ratings, they are going to feature the First Family.

I agree that the tabloidification of the white house is completely ridiculous, but Obama is president. He's constantly doing things which could very well effect us all. It only makes sense that he's in the news all the time.

Reading this, I can see it's more of a 'positive image' thing now. OK.
His wife is attractive and young, so not only is the old fart media talking about policy, but the hip young celebrity gossip magazines are looking at her. Seeing what she wears, her style.
Right at 'seeing what she wears, her style', I was thinking of that woman who sang at the inaguration and her crazy hat (that's going up for sale, too)

True, it'd be nice to be friends with someone whose dad is the freaking president of a large country. Though starting out young was also how Miley Cyrus became Hannah Montana, though that's pop star matter anyway.
The first family is pretty much catering to all of the major demographics of viewers. So obviously, to keep ratings, they are going to feature the First Family.
I see it now. Thanks for the info.
Still though, the doll thing is creepy anyway.

Certainly nice timing.
But whatever you want to do, I guess.

From the cover of the National Enquirer: "Michelle tells Oprah, 'BACK OFF! HE'S MINE!'"
The point? People aren't concerned with the Obamas' daily lives. Gargantuan worms with skeletons, on the other hand... :P

Clinton's girl made news when she was rude by leading at the dinner table.
Bush's girls made news and tabloids for being drunken sluts.
Cheney's daugher caught lots of flak for being a homosexual.
This doesn't seem like anything new to me.

I completely disagree. The only reason he is so popular is because he is the first colored POTUS. And it changed everything, it was very noticeable on CNN, who had way more colored analysts covering the inauguration than they did covering the election. Hell, it even made the Republicans choose a colored guy to lead their party.
Injured Workers rights were taken away in the 1920's by an insurance company (WCB), it's high time we got them back.

I wasn't discounting that some if it is that he is black, but that the entire infatuation with the First Family is more than just skin color. I wasn't saying his race had nothing to do with it, I was explaining that there are other factors as to why you see them all over the media.

Yeah, but does Iceland have a history of oppressing gays and treating them as second-class, non-human citizens as recently as 50 years ago?

I know this is a bit late, but I completely agree. At my school, we watch "Channel One News", and all they had for a week was Obama stories. "Now let's see how Obama spent his first day in office" "Now let's see how Obama spent his first week in office". I'm certain Bush never got anywhere CLOSE to that kind of coverage. To be honest, I find it just ridiculous how huge a deal everyone's making over it. No one even cares what he stands for. I'll bet half the people at the inauguration didn't know a single thing Obama stood for.

Umm there was no hate portrayed there at all.
I don't buy that it's coincidence that the Rep party gets a colored leader at teh same time the country gets a colored POTUS. To me it seems more like a "well it worked for them, maybe we should try it" kind of situation.

i think the main reason that they focus on them so much is becuase they're not like the other presidents before them. I mean there were rumors that both Bush and Bill cheated on their wifes(well actually bill did) while Obama hasn't, which makes him viewed in a kind of noce way. Another reason they view them as "The Family" is becuase they look like they do the same things as us like when they went to church, and when they got the dog.
Shut up already.

I think the whole Obamamania is quite hilarious. people falling over themselves to get information on him and get him elected. the side effects are devastating.
Funniest part is, would be how Obama is taking all of this. He was loving it when he had nothing but support and was standing in front of massive crowds of slack jawed mindless supporters. Now he stands in front of a small crowd of slack jawed politicians which does not fully support him. He seems to be getting frustrated by how long it's taking to get his Government Stimulus package passed. He was expecting bipartisan support, but instead ran into bipartisan opposition. The bill passed in the house with no GOP votes and now its being debated in the senate. I also love how the democrats keep reminding the republicans "We won, NOT YOU!!!" and yet the republicans are holding steady so far. I just hope none of them start bending under the pressure that the democrats are trying to put on em.
Placing bets on when Obama has a temper tantrum on camera/tape. $50 says 1 month and we'll get a video and/or audio recording of Obama going apeshit. He's already showing signs of frustration.
I'm not crazy, everyone else is.

The "Obama Girls" need to get over it and go home, the election craze is over, hes now Prez, leave him alone and let him do his frickin job. I politicaly do not support Obama but i strongly believe the Facist Media need to go bug someone else.

As recently as 25 years ago, according to this.
