Microsoft have some software called XNA that allows you develop on the Xbox 360. However, it is quite daunting to use for a Flash developer since C# is a HUGE step up from Actionscript.

The official XNA forums don't help much since they're focused towards normal programmers. And plus there aren't any really good simple tutorials for people to learn from. The best simple help you get is from buying books, but who wants to spend money on this?

That is why I'm looking to create some forums dedicated to going from Flash development to Xbox 360 development in XNA. The tutorials will be focused towards Flash developers, so it'll be like "this is how it's done in Flash and this is how it's done in XNA". It'll cover everything, from displaying your first graphic to making your first entire game, all made entirely user friendly for Flash developers. Plus there will be help sections and everything else a good forum needs.

And it won't just be for people with Xboxes. XNA games are developed on Windows and then ported over to the Xbox, but you can just keep them on Windows if you want :)

.

But anyway, this is just a general feeler. I'm still writing tutorials and making the forums, but if you are interested please post here. It'll encourage me to get them done sooner :)

Oh, and did I mention that all the software you need to start making XNA games is completely free? :)

You really think it's worth trying to help the average users of this forum? I dunno.

Going from Flex applications to C# wouldn't be as big a step as from Flash, so I think the move should first of all be away from how things are done with Flash (no notion of MVC organization, view being used as the model).

I would love to see a section dedicated to this. I tried to develop on XNA a while back, but it was just too much work with too little help.

No one would help because you may get %2 of NG even able to pull that off.

Sounds like a cool idea! More people should definately take advantage of the tools, but it is very hard to do so if you dont have a background in programming as theres hardly anything about to help, like you said.

You know what id really like to see done? A similar thing for Unity3D. I cant believe the potential this thing has. Im pretty sure you could make most games you find on the xbox live arcade with it, and have it playable in a browser, fullscreen.

I got plans ;P

Porting... so apps written on XNA on the PC won't work on the 360, and we have to rewrite it?

No im pretty sure the XNA dev kit in only availible on windows. You have to make it on a PC, then I guess when youre done you export it to be played on the 360.

I'd definitely read them. I know C++ but I don't know much about C#.

I did see a piece of software under development awhile ago that allowed you to make games and showcase them on XBL, and I think you could also import flas and export swfs. It was called advanced gamemaker or something like that, NOT gamemaker 7 from yoyo.com. I cant find it now.

add me on xbox 360: CoD4 and CoD5 (and sometimes TF2) gamertag: andy70707

This implies not using Flash to write code. You hypocrite! :p

Unless you use a document class; then you absolve all need for coding on frames ;) not that i do, because then i may aswell just go to flex fully :P But you know what i mean! And since when do you play devil's advocate? you usually just wipe shit over everything :P

no, most of the coding will work on both and it has a port button
but xna sucks and there isnt a really big community so there arent any flash2xna forums
I wouldnt start with the xna gaming tutorials but the C# express tuts, so if you actually go to xna you'd know a bit about C# programming, and its not really so different from AS either, most C# classes could be ported easily into flash

Oh, I know :) But lots of people think that. In reality the syntax is pretty much the same. I'm hoping for people to start looking and XNA and suddenly realizing it isn't as hard as they thought at all :)

Just to clarify there, the code you write works on both the PC and the Xbox 360. You don't have to rewrite anything.

Does XNA suck because you tried it and couldn't get anywhere? Or because there are no communities around it? Or because there is an inherent problem that prevents the software from working?

Well, I'm looking to fix the first two of those problems by creating a community and tutorials :) As for the last thing, well, I haven't noticed any inherent problems in it, so that most likely isn't the issue :)

I am still making tutorials, I have lots planned, but I'm chugging through them well. There should be enough tutorials there already to get you started and playing with XNA ;)

All comments and ideas welcome.

i know c++, but this site: http://www.csharphelp.com/archives/archi ve138.html compares c# to a different languages, but it doesn't have anything about action script.

Exactly ;) And actually I don't cover much C# really, I more look at using the functionality provided by XNA to make games.

that sounds like a good idea then. is xna really hard to do as a first programming experience? because it might be a better idea to just try to compleatly relearn it.

If you started with C# and then when over to Actionscript, the first thing you'd notice is how much harder it is to debug in Flash. Then you'll complain about how limited Actionscript is.

Which one you decided to learn first, it probably won't matter in the long run. All programming languages are fundamentally the same, you use functions and variables to make pretty shapes fly onto the screen.

These tutorials shouldn't be past anyones skill level. As long as you know basic Actionscript you should be able to make your way through them just fine :)
