It's official, folks: after a lengthy financial meltdown, the government of Iceland has collapsed.

What do you see in the future for Iceland? What do you think will (or will not) happen? Discuss.

From the article it appears Iceland should've joined the EU for financial help but national pride got in the way.

Icelands domino set has been kicked and now we wait for how long it takes to finish.

For those not familiar with Parliamentary systems, a governmental collapse is not that big a deal, it just means that the ruling Parliament is no longer in power and new elections must be held.

The "government" is the ruling part of the party: the prime minister and his cabinet. The frontbenchers.

Click the link next time. Telegraph clearly states at the beginning of the page that the prime minister and his entire cabinet also resigned.

Now it's my turn. This is probably a ludicrous idea, but hear it out: Iceland could switch to the euro, but in order to do that it's been required to actually join the Union. Not all Icelanders are happy with this idea. Greenlanders, meanwhile, have EU citizenship, but can't vote on Union issues. Norway isn't entirely against joining the EU, but doesn't necessarily like the idea either.

So if, in the midst of this crisis, the EU manages to spurn all three of these countries--and given recent trends in Russia they just might--is it possible they could tell the EU to go to hell and form their own coalition...a Nordic Confederation, perhaps? Of course, Greenland would have to officially secede from Denmark, but Iceland did that in 1944, so why not?

I invite you to either support or refute my theory.

Yes, this is what I mean. The Prime Minister and Cabinet (the cabinet is built of Ministers; the Prime Minister is essentially a cabinet member, but the leader) are the government. When they fall, new elections must be held.

The entire government system hasn't fallen. They are still a Parliamentary system, they will just need re-elections. The government (I.E., the Prime Minister and his cabinet) has fallen, and new elections must be held.

although unlikely, that sounds awesome. Too bad Sweden and Denmark is already in the EU, which kinda limits the whole things. Especially considering that Sweden along with Norway are really the only "significant countries" in the north. If such an alliance was done without Sweden, then it would basically just be a "Norway and the others" club.

I found the story in the local paper disturbing, where the outgoing Political Party have announced higher quotas for more whaling to take place. As well as allowing for the harvest of even more species of whales.

I swear that I'm never going to get how a Parlimentary system works, nor all of the complicated procedures behind.

Regardless, what seems to be evident is that Iceland's financial system has no life left in it. The financial institution has collapsed and they need immediate assistance from the world bank, with loans.

Actually, I wrote up a pretty detailed response, so I am going to post it in a new thread. But yes, it is certainly a sign of the financial situation being truly fucked.
