Well, I personally think that both music and lyrics are extremely important to the overall quality of the song, however, I don't think it's generally that balanced, depending on the genre. For example, for a lot of techno/electronica-type music and hard rock/heavy metal-ish stuff, music clearly takes precedence over lyrics, whereas with genres like folk and rap (I mean real rap) there is generally a greater emphasis on lyrics than music.

That being said, a lot of indie/alternative music as well as classic rock ('60s-'70s and mostly pre-metal) seem to balance the two in terms of emphasis, which I guess explains why those are my two favorite genres.

Lyrics are just as important as the intrumental pieces imho - the lyrics provide the substance, although we don't necesarilly listen to the lyrics I'm sure we register them some way or another (which gives the whole effect from the song).

It all really depends on what kind of music the band is playing. If a band is an electronic band that mostly focuses on music, then good lyrics arn't really important. If the band is playing a slow song with quiet music, then good lyrics are a must. It's always good to have good lyrics though, seeing that it will help a song become more memorable, but it's not nessesary.

that depends how strong the instruments accompanying the singer are playing, if theyre playing sift, then yeah kinda, just because we'll be able to hear the singer more, and if the instruments accompanying the singer are loud and strong, then not so much because the singer might just barely be able to be heard

I hate Lyrics they ruin the song especially when you want to listen to Techno, when a singer comes in and ruins the base it all fails. And the song fails.

Even though SOAD does have some good Lyrics in Sugar, maybe even BYOB

Writing in music is just as important as the writing in movies. Without it, it got no soul.

If lyrics didn't matter, people like Soulja Boy would be famous.

Not only the content of the lyrics itself matter, but also the rythm they produce. That's often the case in rap music.

Did OP really just call Slipknot "super hardcore"? It's every 10 year old prepubescent kid's idea of extreme metal, who haven't really heard actual metal or any subgenres.

Besides that, lyrics DO matter, because I don't know about other intelligent people, but I like intelligent lyrics. People on the radio with lyrics that don't make sense or are like this;

"You had left me a week ago
We were too young, what did I know?
Too old to need, too young to care
Now I wish I'd stayed with you there

OOOHHH BOOO HOOO OHHHH BOOO HOOO

YA WA DIPPIDY DOO

OOOOOHHH BOOO HOOOO OHHH BOOO HOOO"

Yeah, that proves that they don't deserve to be on the radio over anyone else, because ANYONE could've came up with shit lyrics like that. Say what you need to say in a unique way from everyone else. That's what makes a great song from a shit generic song. Think about it from a new perspective. Use different imagery and metaphors and stuff. Mess with the structure to reflect the song, ect. Makes it more interesting and uncopyable.

Lyrics aren't the most important thing to me, but I still care if songs have good lyrics. Then again, look at 1776 by Iced Earth. It's an instrumental, but it's one of their best songs.

are you fucking retarded? howard jones and corey taylor are some of the best metal vocalists of our day. they scream but you can most of the time make out every single word.

however some good examples would be the vocalist of 'as i lay dying'. hes terrible. and in the early years of Lamb of God, randy sounds like shit.

Lyrics are the most important part of the song, well the backing track helps but without lyrics they're just instrumental and not neccessarilly meaningful.

Nightwish suck compared to ACDC but I can see where your friend could be coming from.

Some lyrics mean something to a lot of people in general concencus, or they mean something specifically to the band and the songwriter.
So it depends what type of song you mean. And some lyrics are total nonsense like some Muse songs..

Listen to the song by itself.

Now read the lyrics while you listen to the song again.

It makes a difference.

according to christians, even listening to a song with "inappropriate" lyrics is a sin. so I guess they do matter.

Of course lyrics matter.
If there weren't lyrics, what's the point.
Would you rather here a Nightwish song, or a song that goes:
Shnazzle fazzle. Then the rest the gutair riffs?
Or words?

I love Street Fighter. obviously.

lulz... nightwish. but no, system of a down proves that your lyrics can suck ass as long as you scream them (like every band nowadays). what happened to the music man??? now everyone claims they're into "alternative" (them and everyone else man... lol) and i'm all like "WHATEVA! WHATEVA! I DO WHAT I WANT!" oo;

so i says to the barkeep, "that's no dog, that's my wife!"

You guys are over exaggerating what i said all I care is if the vocals sound good. No i don't want them to repeat the same thing over and over again and I don't wan them to scream. If the lyrics are good fine but if the lyrics are like a metallica song well as long as the guitar is good that's fine.

Ok maybe I am so used to only listening to good bands I don't know what bad lyrics are please show me examples of bad lyrics.
I mean who can beat this poetry...

She was a fast machine
she kept her motor clean
she was the best damn woman I have ever seen
she had sightless eyes telling me no lies
knocking me out with those American thighs
taking more than her share
had me fighting for air
she told me to come but was already there
ect...

I saw her coming in high heels
Moving like a queen
A little sweet angel but deep underneath

You're lying in wait to make me a fool
You want me to bite
I'm gonna take the bait and the hunter for afters
I'll take you for a ride

Actually a really good song.

The wall stopped shakin
my mind was achin and you
Shook my all night long.
Yeah you.
Shook me all night long.

The fuck are you on about?

Actually a really good song.

It's not even the same song.

Also,

Wanna tell you a story
'Bout a woman I know
When it comes to lovin'
Oh she steals the show
She ain't exactly pretty
Ain't exactly small
Forty-two, thirty-nine, fifty-six
You could say she's got it all
Never had a woman
Never had a woman like you
Doing all the things
Doing all the things you do
Ain't no fairy story
Ain't no skin and bone
But you give it all you got
Weighing in at nineteen stone
You're a whole lotta woman
A whole lotta woman
Whole lotta Rosie
And you're a whole lotta woman
Oh honey you can do it
Do it to me all night long
Only wanna turn
Only wanna turn me on
All through the night time
And right around the clock
To my surprise
Rosie never stops
