California's tax return IOU's. 2009-01-30 00:31:26 Reply

California State Controller John Chiang announced on January 26 that California's bills exceed its tax revenues and credit line and that the state is going to print its own money known as IOUs. The template is already designed.

Instead of receiving their state tax refunds in dollars, California residents will receive IOUs. Student aid and payments to disabled and needy will also come in the form of IOUs. California is negotiating with banks to get them to accept the IOUs as deposits.

Well it's official, California is using monopoly money for tax returns and welfare. If any Californians have one of these notes could you please post a scan or a pic of it? I wonder if they would have Mr.Swarzenazi's picture on them.

Hmm, so the IOU's are now officially going out, eh? I thought California went to Congress for its own bailout proposal, one which I'm sure Congress would've approved of.

hahahaha, Buenos Aires, and many other provinces, and the Federal Government did that here in the year 2000. I remember Wal-Mart and Careffour not accepting them as payments, and they almost went bankrupt because of that; people went back to small businesses.
Ah, good times. Except for the depression and the deaths.

I see it now, The Grapes of Wrath 2: The Return Home.

Cause seriously, you people are getting paid with promises no better then the Joads got for heading to California.

It's temporary-- and I'm not an Oakie.
Something like this is bound to happen. Everyone needs to cut back in one way or other, even if they don't like it.

But seeing news of execs begging the government for help... then buying an airplane so they can go to a ritzy dinner and talk about the financial problem...

Jesus Christ.

See in my state, we just cut back on spending and raise taxes.

We don't stiff the the State residents on return of some of thier money.

That's what we did, but you can't squeeze blood from a rock... or cut meat from a bare bone.
I mean, even the DMV people had to work less than minimum wage during the summer. Or lose their job.

It's an ongoing problem, and already things are looking crapy. You go to the parks, the grass is dead. You can't go to the bathroom cause cops or rangers aren't their to scare the pervs.

But-- hey-- It's at least an IOU.
I will eventually see my money, one day.

There's always more programs that can be cut, there's always more little initiatives that can be slashed and burned.

Word. I'd be pissed if they tried to give me an IOU. That alone would feel like an insult. Lawl @ aluminum wrapped chocolate coins used as IOU's. At least you could eat those.

If you cut any more, you cut from schools.
I mean, they've already eliminated after school sports like football-- heck, they're thinking about cutting sports altogether. The art classes are gone altogether.

What's next? English? All because most people already speak it?

And, there's that saying.
Every cloud has its silver lining... I think things could have been worse. They may have just take the money altogether. Hasn't that happened before? That's what the US did to all the people who participated in the Bracero programs during the Depression-- a life time of savings...

Just gone.

Wait, a state that taxes more has no money? Where does the money go? Why does California elect people who can't be trusted to be fiscally responsible?

I'm bamboozled.

What do you people do with the money. You have one of the largest populations in the nation, great swarths of tourism and industry and pretty high taxes (relatively).

Where does all this money go? What are your representitives doing with the cash?

You know why California is so fucked up? Because the Bay Area spreads it's liberal bullshit to the rest of the state, and thanks to that we're the most bureaucratic entity in the U.S after the Federal Government.

Ok, want a good example? I go to a continuation school pretty close to Oakland/SF, right? The average fucking class size is literally, like, FIVE. We've been getting a little fucked over in funding thanks to that, and due to the fact that my school likes to drop a lot of money on us students, on things ranging from expensive educational aids to field trips (remember, it's a continuation school, so without spending some extra money the majority of students will fail), we're EXTREMELY low on basic supplies like pencils and paper. So does the government give us an extra, say... 500 bucks to completely restock on all the supplies we could POSSIBLY need for a 70 student school? Of course not; they recently gave us MILLIONS of dollars that we HAD to spend on brand new, state of the art class-room facilities... which are now 100%, completely and utterly empty. Again, our average class size is anywhere from 5-10 STUDENTS. And what does the regular high school get? An even bigger and newer building... which is filled up, because the school then decided to demolish it's previous "new" building.

Gee you guys, good thing that the government doesn't waste all it's money or anything.

Not disagreeing with what you are saying about the aforementioned being wasteful, but.....

Let's not forget the $20 billion that just went out in bonuses to idiots that sank the economy, but I guess private entities don't piss money away all of the time either.

Oddly enough, it happens the same here. The Province of Buenos Aires ranks 7th out of 23 in GDP per capita in the Nation, and accounts for 40% of the country, yet it currently faces a gigantic deficit of 3 billion pesos. But that has more to do with how tax money is distributed among provinces and the federal govt.

I assume you're talking about me, cumguzzler.
1) LA is not flat
2) No cals like yourself are the reason why we're in a budget crisis.

You arrogant, low IQ level pricks up north take all the funding, leaving nothing for LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and you wonder why we, the Californians with actual lives, hate you.

Our state of emergency is because of you and the rest of your people's "everyone depends on the government" philosophy.

Actually, the tourism industry went really down hill in the past 4 years.
Well-- actually, spiked really high up twice when gay marriage was legalized-- especially in San Francisco.

There are many factors going on, and I don't know all of them. But I think one huge problem that's really affecting us much more harder than it should--

We don't have a diverse amount of industries. I mean, people are born and raised in cities here-- and the wave was all about computers. Whereas other cities, they were riding the same wave but at the same time-- they had agriculture too.

CA was phasing that out for several decades already, with the exception of beef and milk. And we have pockets here and there (Sanoma and San Joaquin.) San Jose, which used to be known as the heart's of the valley's delight-- doesn't even have orchards anymore. Again... maybe pockets here and there (there's a vineyard up the hills-- 20 minutes towards the East Side.)

It's one of those things that happens.
