4.09 / 5.00 15,161 ViewsEvery time I come to the NG forums, there's normally six or seven collabs I see on the 1st page. But, most of them seem so flipping dumb. I'm not going to throw out names, but, shouldn't a collab's topic be based around a pop culture, interesting"thing" that at least 70% of Newgrounds has at least heard about, with decent animation? And what really bugs me is when I see a submitted flash collab, and it has a 2.93 (or lower) score! In my opinion, if a collab doesn't make AT LEAST a 4.00 in the day it was submitted, it was a failure.
Every once in a while a come across a collab that seems pretty interesting, however the thread ended up being bumped from like, 5 months ago. it really makes no sense to me.
And okay I take back what i said about not throwing out names. The Lazer Collab. Bullshit of the highest degree. Like, what, 6 mediocre, made-in-20-minutes skits about a meme that has been beaten to a bloody pulp? Might as well roll the credits when I hit the play button. And it has 100,000 hits?!
Lol and your definition of QUALITY is an overrated Mario sprite flash?
Lets see you make a collab that is non-sprite or video game themed that gets a 4.0.
YOu can't say anything because you never RAN a collab.
Your logic is flawed, there are many successful collabs that made less than a 4.00

Ahh you live in Seattle. Cool people live in Seattle.
Anyways, and overrated Mario flash isn't necessarily my idea of quality. I've seen plenty of collabs get a 4.0 the day they were submitted.
Okay first off, you don't need have run a collab to understand quality. I realize it's probably hard as hell...believe me, I do. The message I'm trying to get across here is the collab ideas people come up with are so uninteresting.
Do you honestly think I want to sit and watch 15 minutes of Red Bull commercials?
Look at Nin10doh! Look at the Metal Gear Collabs. THOSE are quality. There is no reason that just because most of NG is underground, they can't be that same quality.

At least he's trying to break from the norm.
Look at Shit! Look at the Metal Gear Shit. THOSE are shit. There is no reason that just because most of NG is underground, they can't be that same shit.
Fixed. ;)
Dude, truth is, nobody cares... Most people either join collabs for fun, or to hone their animation skills.
I do it mostly for the fun... ^.^
I can't tell if you're joking, because you never use emoticons. ~ SolidToad
if it has such an uniteresting title simply don't watch it
awww
Dude, you're totally right... It's so easy to make a quality flash with a 4.0 score. I could do it with my eyes closed, and it's so easy to think of a unique idea these days. It's not like a lot of the ideas have already been done in the book! Oh noes! Collabs are so easy to create and make them successful! Woo.
Psh, I saw some shitty collabs in this forum. Like that one featuring something song about someone holding their loved one in their arms. That's stupid as hell! Oh, and The Newgrounds Collab .. HOW UNORIGINAL IS THAT?
</sarcasm>
lmao. You make me laugh.
Do you know what's even more annoying/unnecessary?
How many topics are created about how many collabs there are.
Ha!
But, I have to say I fully support collabs. They showed me to easily work with other members of the community in Flash, and working as a team.
They also helped me improve because I wasn't ready for big project solo things early on.
I fully support collabs.
GAH!
Sorry, but I agree with the OP. Some of the ideas for collabs make me cringe. I also notice that during the UK shift ( while allot of the US is sleeping), there are harpy any collab topics posted on. Then when I check in the morning here, the flash forum page 1 is full of threads for collabs that had no activity during the UK shift.
I think a good collab organizer makes a collab good. Someone who can easily say: "Fuck, sorry man, this isn' t good at all" and someone who KNOWS what would make the collab a quality. Some people are happy enough with any parts; but you should look for good people and good animations. That way you could make a good collab, given the theme is interesting enough.
I'm certain we'll see some more cool collabs. I agree that some don't make much sense. ;)

My collab a while ago got a good score, but I'm ashamed of it and hate myself for it. Most of these collabs have no storyline whatsoever or are usually never unique. Some collabs however are story boarded and do have a storyline with interesting changing art as you go along.
I don't care if people like Jonny or whoever it is who hosted the MGS collab (maybe Stamper?) and the Street fighter collab currently in progress who have some boundaries on quality shorts. Shit like the Pyro collab and such are turning out really crappy with inexperienced animators hoping to get fame and glory for their work.
Oh and I think we've all had enough with those line collabs :3

No. In fact, the ones that avoid pop culture and make something new? They're to be respected...
Examples: 'Five Shades of...' series, Pass the Flash

Your call on what makes a failure varies to other peoples. Assuming NG's submissions follow a bell curve (it doesn't... I'm assuming really it follows a Pareto graph that with blammed submissions removed becomes slightly more Guassian, but still with a very weighty first half), a 3 is a ballpark average score. There is nothing wrong with being average

Long live threadromancy...

You said "shouldn't a collab's topic be based around a pop culture, interesting 'thing' that at least 70% of Newgrounds has at least heard about, with decent animation?", but now you think collab organisers are unoriginal? Can anyone see the flaw here?
Look at Nin10doh! Look at the Metal Gear Collabs. THOSE are quality. There is no reason that just because most of NG is underground, they can't be that same quality.
So?
Nin wasn't organised here. Neither were a lot of good collabs. A LOT of collabs happen because artists speak to each other and talk and decide to do games without having to make a publicity post on Newgrounds. But a lot of people just starting out don't HAVE those contacts or haven't gotten drunk with potential flash partners at meetups and so need to appeal to a wider range of people to get them on board with an idea they can't complete alone.
Thats why we have these things to be on the boards - not because us with the gold auras like pissing people off with seven or eight collaberation threads a day bumping down thier posts about platform engines not working in AS3, but because people who want to get a project going need the voice. And yeah, we set a minimum batting average at 3.5 and lock threads down as and when we see them being unoriginal or outright idiotic, but we don't stop those ideas existing. Hopefully by the time a newbie collaberation organiser to be spots his thread's been locked, a few people have PMed him asking if they want the collab to go on outside of the forums.
Least, thats what I hope. The other moderators are cold hearted cybernetic wombats with lasers where thier capacity for Hope used to be...
As for the collabs run by the Staff - they're inundated with more applications than they have room for. Of course they're going to be good - they can cherry pick the best entries and leave the spam and chaff to rot. Most other collabs are lucky to have all thier 'slots' filled.

This is partly down to Kirk being ninja at locking threads quickly, partly because most people on the forum from the UK have met at the London Eye by now and have each others MSN addresses, and partly because NG is an American site with *checks* 44% of its viewers coming in from the USA, and 4% coming in from the UK

Speaking as someone who's sole claim to his 4.1 batting average are two collaberations from the LegendaryFrog days, collaberations rock. There ARE a lot of bad collabs out there - some badly organised, some badly motivated and staffed, and some just plain bad, and there ARE a tonne of collabs that I imagine just fall completely through. But thats okay. It just makes the other team efforts look so much better.
One thing I do take issue with is the way the One Song Collaberation style seems to have limitted every other collab organiser's mind. If you're doing a collaberation around a theme and not a song, you don't need to allocate a list of blank slots.
There is PLENTY the collaberation organisers could do to improve the quality of thier collabs or make them stand out from other ones, but most of the guys organising ones here are:
a - just starting out, and therefore have low quality and average aspirations
or b - appealing to the NGBBS users at large and don't expect revolutions to happen from it.
You want an original cutting edge collab? Get some friends together and do it yourself. You want to see your name in lights for just a brief moment as part of a team and fit the collab rules? You start a thread here.
I personally don't want it any other way

Your logic is flawed because you are accusing him of logic flaws when infact it is nothing but a different use of terms, a subjective personal opinion. He might think that the collabs you think are successful are not succesful, and though the contradiction is very apparent, it is not due to logic, but to personal opinion.
actually i worked on my part for the lazer collab for about a week or two. it's the people who work on theirs for 20 minutes who don't get in the lazer collab.

That's a load of shit. Just cause you don't like some ideas for collabs doesn't mean the 1 million other NG members don't like it. Collab organizers don't give a shit what one guy with onl 1 crappy Mario submission has to say. Collabs are for fun, cause people who make parts can happily make a fun part and see it in the collab. So go away if you don't like the collabs with a score below 4.
