If people would be scared enough of the punishment not to commit the crime, it would work.
This is what I wrote earlier: As a society, we shouldn't degrade ourselves to what criminals do, or worse, in order to punish them. We're smarter than that, aren't we? Criminals are people, too, like it or not. I'd bet you'd even feel sorry for them, if you knew their life story.

If we listened to Gandhi all the time, then Hitler would've still been marching his troops up and down Europe.
"Every murder or other injury, no matter for what cause, committed or inflicted on another is a crime against humanity." - Gandhi, again. So, it's not like he's saying, hypothetically, that Hitler should've kept doing what he was doing. He's saying if Hitler was captured, put on trial for his crimes, and then sentenced, he shouldn't be subjected to torture for the rest of his life, or something along the lines. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Gandhi, yet again.

Until you have a child of your own you can't fully understand how horrible and chilling this is. Now that I have small children of my own a story like that just breaks my heart and makes me want to strangle those parents. It's just awful. They should have to sit in a dark, damp, cold, 3x3 foot cell for the rest of their life. This country has gotten way to weak when dealing with criminals. The USA is a country of pussies and now even more pussies are in power in our government. We're doomed if the pussies continue to run our country and let people like this off the hook.
I may not have a child of my own yet, but what if I do, one day, and I hear about a story like this? What if I get sad and angry about it, but don't wish for the criminal to sit in a confined 3x3 cell? Like how animals do before they're slaughtered for our meat. That's called cruel and usual punishment, which I shouldn't remind you is listed under the Eighth Amendment, for the US Constitution, in this case. Besides, what about my parents, and my younger brother? They're loving people, too, despite my personal problems with my mom. The point is I can think about them, if I hear about someone else committing a crime.
Btw, I'm not saying we should let the criminals off the hook.
