Compressing Jpegs And Swf Size... 2009-01-26 16:36:34 Reply

So i have this kinda basic question i was hoping i could get some info on...

I have a bunch of images i want to put in my flash project yet at this point my swf is over 35mb and its just way too big. I always thought that if i shrink a big image in flash it will take less space but i noticed it is not the case, and even if I cut only a small part of the image to use in the project, the swf size will still be the same as if i had the whole full res image in there...

So i'm wondering how to best prepare all those images to use for flash? Is it better to use JPEGs or to import PSD files? Or some other format?

Also - For most of them I know exactly what size of images i will need in my flash project. I thought i could go into Photoshop and simply shrink/stretch/crop the image to be the size i need. However, i am having a bit of trouble grasping that whole DPI concept... I mean, i know what it means in theory, but i don't quite get how it matters - the size of the image should be the same no matter what dpi i use, and the jpeg i paste in there will not increase or decrease in quality based on the dpi, right? Am i just confusing myself? So what DPI should I use when preparing those images in photoshop? What is the default DPI in Flash, since i don't think i can manually set it?

It's pretty important that i get good quality jpeg's in this flash site i'm working on, yet at the same time it's such a big file right now, it's a bit too big...

I hope I don't sound too confusing, but I hope someone can shine a bit of light on all this for me. Thanks much.

Save them as .png files, that saves a lot of space. JPEG is a ridiculous file format in flash, and maxes out a lot of memory.
