I think there is too much mimicry of music, not within the music itself, but of the environment surrounding it. Big artists hype their music and make tweets/posts saying "new thumping track", and the Benny-Skrilliesto-gores wannabes start mimicing that.

I agree presentation and the artist are part of a musical package to be sold, but people doing that when their music is rubbish is just derpitocity of great magnitude.

I certainly know some people who post frequently saying "new insane track coming" and when its 'released' (posted on facebook an hour later), its got some scale-less melody with the synth's osc fine tuning LFO'd maknig it sound more like some bowel-noise modeling then pleasing music.

It really isn't. I love Skrillex's music, but it sucks that it causes so many people to make "songs" that give dubstep a bad name.

I find people complain about dubstep being all about squeezing 5 basses in the drop...but the thing is, in a sense that's the point to most (certain type of) dubstep songs, and there is nothing unmusical about it. Rather than the focus being on the musical theory, it's on the sound design, and just getting really cool and hyper sounds, which is an art in itself. And when you listen closely, you can still hear cool melodies/chord progressions coming out of the big sound sometimes. That's one reason you hear lots of shitty dubstep from kiddies, they don't realize that music theory is still a big part of Dubstep.

And here's another side to Dubstep...

But I find that Dubstep receives the most discrimination by people, usually the hipsters. They say "I don't like Dubstep", usually for the sake of something being Dubstep, rather than treating it on a song by song basis.

I'm exhausted, so I'm pretty sure my post didn't make sense at one point or another...

I know that some people don't like dubstep...BUT WHO THE FUCK DOESN'T LIKE PANCAKES?!

Atm the only element needed to satisfy people is a rythm, we have successfully gone abck to the stone age of music!

Personally, I think dubstep is a refreshing departure from a repeating 4 on the floor kick drum for a whole track, and the same generic chords we've been hearing for the last 30 years.

I'm sitting in the same seat. Overwhelming project workload results in your mind kind of shutting down. Don't know where to start, don't know how to get it all done.

People often criticize composers/producers of writing meaningless generic stuff, but honestly I am beginning to see value in cookie cutter methods. Put chord progression here, with instrument and orchestration and such there, mix it down and presto.

One thing you must realize is, not everything you write can be genius. Sometimes you have to think about what is good enough. Prioritize which projects are most important and dedicate time accordingly. I know it's hard, all projects are "important", but which ones are you going to really show case for future work? Those are the ones you want to make sure are golden.

And then when you've out of that forest, you should really try to limit your project work load by setting rates which are fair on you. This will let you stay super creative and produce what you want at the quality you want. Sadly I keep telling myself this also but I love to torture myself. Even now, here I am, literally 2 hours from a deadline on a forum. My tea is empty and my energy quickly disappearing.

But game on modda fucka. You cannot be broken here, neither can I. Pick up your bloody tools and with what life you have left, shatter the peace with your brilliance >:0!

end rant, get back to work.

I stil llike to just make music and have peopel decide after if they wanna use it or not - no deadlines, no expectations, everyone's happy - and if they're not, well I still am ;)

although competitions can be fun too.

And I wanna follow that Chron's post up by saying that even if there is a dubstep song out there that he likes, he doesn't have to wade through every single other song before he can safely say "yep I definitely hate this".

e.g. I don't really like RHCP. Someone once told me that I had to listen to all their songs before I could say I didn't like them. Fuck that noise.

We all like different things, but the basic premise of dubstep isn't exactly fresh either.
I'm just the kind of guy that values melodic content more than some lfo rapin' wave shapin'.

I'm not saying dubstep can't be good, but from the dubstep i've heard so far I've got to say I have little faith left in such productions.

Doctor P - the boss, it's a 4 second loop that's dragged out for 3 minutes, oh and that screech lead makes me want to punch a retarded/crossbred penguin-cat so hard that it goes back to being a fetus.

If you really want to go for something fresh I'd say to turn away from EDM completely.

I'm not obsessed with dubstep, unlike all of my friends, I just like the occasional dubstep, like xKore and Krowe, but I hate how many try-hard dubstep "producers" there are on this site, it puts a bad rep on dubstep sometimes, I love making dubstep as well, I think it's the most fun genre to make out of everything, I got bored of making trance, so i'm in a dubstep/electro phase now :D

Yeah but there's a difference between saying 'i hate this' and 'this is shit'. The former I can fully appreciate, I get that some people don't like dubstep, but the latter comes across as offensive and annoying. When people start putting others down simply because they like something different to you, by making smarmy comments that dubstep is shit at every single turn, that's what annoys me.

What a coincidence! This is exactly what I've been making for the last 2 weeks or so, after leaving the 4/4 realms of music for about a year...I find it welcoming coming back to electro actually...and Dubstep just fits in along with it so nicely...

I dunno, I guess I'm just really detached from my taste in music so, to me at least, the difference between the two doesn't bother me at all.

Personally I don't go out of my way to diss users who make dubstep - I don't care what you make - from electronic industrial polka to whatever.. I simply react if they attempt to shove it down my throat and I have already politely tried to tell them I don't like the genre and theyre all "well im sure there is SOME dubstep you may like!"

from my personal experience - not really - becasue the part that makes it dubstep is the part that ruins it for me in the song unfortunately - we all have certain things that resonate negatively inside us - sadly for me it's the bass. Or wubs. If you made a song entirely wubless - i MIIIIGHT like it -but its always the didididdididoddododododdodo breakdown and then the WUB WA WAOOOBO WIWIWIWIWIWWUBWUBWUBWUB - and as soon as that kicks in the song is ruined for me.

Sorry.
