I find "video game" music is way too vague a category. It has like orchestral movements, racey-trance and chip tunes in it. I've never liked being told something I've written sounds like video game music.

Cala has a point. VGM is so diverse nowadays that finding anything specific there would probably be a pain in the ass.

Atleast branch it off into oldschool (Chiptunes and otherwise low bit sounding stuff) and newschool(lulz GoW ala classical, metal, technobeats) would make it a great deal mroe efficient to check through.

I haven't checked the VG list for a good 6 years so I wouldn't know. But I'm not surprised if that'd the case.

Chiptunes shouldn't have existed after 1996, therefore should not get their own genre on NG.

Dubstep shouldn't existed after the first use of wobble basses within the genre, yet it got its own genre on NG.

See what I did there?

I think a chip/chiptune/chipstyle/bitpop genre would be a very welcome addition to the portal, but we're just going to have to hold tight and see what the redesign holds for us ;D

The AP should have seperate sections for a lot of things but I feel like it could have the negative effect of creating more of these really clique-y little groups for each particular genre. Who knows!

Lately I've been going to the submit content page and clicking random audio entry and reviewing them. Thanks to that I've found great submissions from years ago and discovered an amazing artist by the name of audio-star.

Even though I don't make about any chiptunes at all, I agree with the notion of having a genre for itself, because I look around the VG portal, and see all possible genres on the AP.

I think they should add a chiptune genre to the portal, but has anyone brought it up to liljim or anyone?

I don't think it's chiptune, since there's no chipping. I might be wrong though, I don't let myself into that genre much.

Well actually it's just a random melody created with a cliché 8-bit synth, but since that's not a genre here on NG, it would best fit under VG.

So what about a synth genre then for synth stuff. We could possibly eliminate industrial, new wave and other categories though which would take some time to re categorize those submissions that would fit better in the synth category then their original.

Synth stuff? I'm not following you there. Also eliminating genres will never, EVER happen (I think), because that would cause major problems with songs of that specific genre.

Well I didn't really care about a synth genre. But does anyone think there will ever be specific genres such as ballads, songs for clubs, songs with real instruments, songs with programs, made for film, or any other specifics like that?

What you're talking about is meta information that is almost completely irrelevant to genres ;)

Also if your song was made with 8-bit or 16-bit hardware OR you made the song to sound like it was made with such stuff then yes it's a chiptune. I didn't listen to yours though.
