Dear lord, of all the days that I could have chosen to pop in here at 2:20 in the morning...

That's the sign put up by fate herself. It's lit in neon and says "GET THE F**K BACK INTO BED".

So guys. I'm thinkin about pickin up a nikon d40. I think it's time to move up to an SLR, and the d40 is pretty much the most cost-effective way to get into the dslr game. Everything I've read suggested it's a really solid body, with only a few somewhat minor nitpicks.

I'll probably also be looking at finding a lens that suits taking pictures of my theater work. It's gotta be fast (it gets dark in those theaters), but I'm not sure if I'd be better suited by a fixed 'normal' or a zoom in the 24-80mm range. It'll take some experimenting I guess.

Thoughts?

My little sister has a D40, and I can definitely attest to image quality. I reckon you would definitely be satisfied with one :).

Head down to your nearest camera place and give one a go :)

I don't doubt that I'd be very satisfied with the body. All the images i've seen taken with a d40 are stunning, even with the kit lens.

reality on the horizon

So i've told a few of you about this (irc regs i guess.), but a guy I've worked with once or twice here in fort wayne is moving forward on a project to start a professional theater here in fort wayne. He's planning on a full season, include a summer stock deal. He's going to be making an offer on the building in the next week or two, and it's all very exciting.

What's even more exciting is that he's offered me a full time lighting design position, at a 'real' salary, that is to say, more money than i've ever made at any point up to now. Unless something unexpected happens, I'll probably be having a real job as a lighting designer, and quite possibly doing quite a bit of sound as well. More than a couple of the people I've gone to school with (for theater) and who have since graduated and been in the real world have not found SHIT in the field, so I'm more than willing to start taking classes part time while I have a chance to not only work in the real world, but to be involved with a theater from the very beginning.

I went to sweetwater today to work out how we might spend the (not insignificant) amount of money he plans to set aside for audio, and it was -very- promising. Looking at a yamaha O1V 24ch digital board, for one, along with a load of QSC cabs. Very exciting.

We'd be looking at being operational as early as may, according to some of the contractors. The building is really promising, it's got space for everything, stage, scene shop, costume shop, rehearsal hall, two apartments to house big names, storage space and everything.

I'm pretty pumped.
