On what you've said, EmperorChalemagne, I pretty much agree with Quarl. Someone along time ago decided music sounded best a certain way, so people are going to continue doing things that way as long as it sounds good to them, even though that person probably died along time ago.
I also think its a lack of understanding. Not everyone has a musical background, so they dont realize there is no real "correct" way to make music. And therefore, because they don't understand it, they don't like it. And with the very little kids are being taught about music in school nowadays unless they pursue it privately, I don't see that changing anytime soon unless someone who uses untraditional methods in music gets massively popular with a large portion of the public. Which again, I dont see happening anytime soon.
Me for example, I like use of melodys alot, I'm not going to lie, but I'm open to alot of things musically and I dont think something like not having a melody would interfere with my opinion unless I'm intentionally comparing it to other pieces. But again, thats because I have enough of a musical background as many here do, whether exploring it on their own level or on a scholarly level, to appreciate effort put into music despite differences from what I usually listen to.
So yeah, thats my opinion.
