Random Note of the Day

I have come to the conclusion that website coding is a talent I do not possess.

I've been debating downloading something of the sort if for no other reason but to test out changes before I put them on my live site... suppose it'd help me learn what I can and can't do as well... But first, I need to find a better FTP Client... Filezilla is refusing to let me download my site so I can work on it offline... Disconnect after disconnect after disconnect after disconnect.

I like the spectrum analyzer window, with the new equalizer. Wasn't a fan of the previous one. Have to see how much better this one works in practice, but it already looks like you have more control. I also like the midi out support. Wonder how well it works with my hardware. Should upgrade.

Did you really expect them to? I mean I think Rack Extensions are the closest thing we're going to get. Personally, the whole VST support never really bothers me. If I want to use them I just pull up Live and rewire.

Yeah this is why reason is totally not the DAW for me. I cannot imagine making music without my VSTs. Reason's racks may be great, but if Reason doesn't give me the ability to hop on the Internet and download an awesome free VST or fork out some money for something as incredible as Omnisphere or East/West, without buying yet another DAW and rewiring, then yeah I'll steer clear and stick to FL.

But that's just me. I'm the type who likes getting new sounds, editing them a little and using them more than making my own with the plugins offered to me. While I love the idea of making my own, I'm not very good at it and having an orchestral background I'm more used to just browsing through a bigass library and picking the sounds I want. And no matter how big Reason's libraries are, I'm sure I'll always feel the need to expand to new VSTs.

What's the big deal with adding VST support anyway? I know it must be easier said than done but frankly it really limits Reason and if anyone else out there is like me, it must put other people off buying it :(.

It's not that they haven't come around to it, they have actively chosen not to support it. One of their employees has written a thorough explanation of their reasoning:

Part 1
Part 2

IMO that is rock solid. If you don't like it you can use a different DAW, which you already do.

I didn't mean to say I'd be against it, but I think the limiting nature of it helps me really focus on the music I'm making. I know all the tools in Reason's rack almost in and out, and I can create what I hear in my head no problem. I have a workflow that's very different from when I use Live, Logic, or Pro Tools. It's all nice and contained which makes it easy to share from computer to computer as well.

I don't mean to come off as Reason is the end all DAW or something radical like that, but I think it has it's place just like FL and Live and whatever else does too. Each DAW has different strengths and weaknesses, it's all about which works for you.

Gonna check out that article Buoy posted too, haven't read it.

forgot the last part, also it's a bit outdated since what they call Record got adapted into the next version of Reason and they have added more expandability since

To be honest, I never completely saw the problem of Reason not supporting VST plugins. When people buy a VST they accept that it doesn't run on its own, and that you need a DAW first, but when they talk about a completely opperational and independent program like Reason, they suddenly complain it doesn't support other stuff. Reason is a pretty complete and solid DAW in itself, that doesn't take up too much of your CPU. You get exactly what you pay for, without needing to buy any additional software. Changing Reason so it will support VSTs will likely make it slower and less comprehensible. Sure there are nice VSTs. If you like to use them, simply use a different DAw that, does support VSTs. Plenty of those. If you like Reason as well, you can buy that too on top of what you already have, rewire it into your other DAW that supports VST and still get value for your money.

If I ever get Reason in the future, I do want to try and see how it is rewired into another DAW though.

This is a good point.

But yeah, I'm still not convinced that Reason is better off without VST support. I can see Propellerhead's reasoning (pun entirely intended) after reading the threads and it makes a lot of sense, but for me, looking through all the free VSTs people like sorohanro post and considering all the amazing specialised VSTs out there that have incredible sounds, I'd lose sleep on the fact that I wouldn't be able to touch any of them had I chosen Reason as my DAW. The shortcomings of third-party plugin support don't really outweigh the limitless benefits, in my opinion. VSTs 4 lyfe.

Not everyone will agree though. In the end it boils down to whatever works best for you I guess.

My little brother makes gabber music, but I have no idea how he does it. His problem is that his productions are of really good quality, but he never finishes anything. This is one of his WIPs.

i program a snappy kick into microtonic, then i use lots of multiband distortion to get it punching at the right frequency. you could probably pull it off using parametric eq and blood overdrive. i use stuff like ohmicide and camelphat.

there's heaps of ways to make disgusting kicks

Since I'm a narcissist and have nothing better to do I made some calculations based on my personal stats, thought some of you could be interested or get a general insight of what's life in the portal like for average people (or maybe I just don't want the 30 minutes I spent go to waste and grieve and become depressed and cry and cut myself and other shit).

All numbers are approximated to look like nice numbers and not mean numbers that give ugly stares.
So anyway,

64967 plays in 35 submissions
avg of 1856.2 plays per song

5819 downloads in 35 submissions
avg of 166.26 downloads per song
avg of 1 download every 11.16 plays

195 audio reviews
avg of 1 review every 333.16 plays
avg of 1 review every 29.84 downloads

96 fans
1 fan gained every 676.74 plays and 60.61 downloads.

Considering this statistics and this statistics only and the total amount of plays,
There's a chance of 8.96% that a listener will decide to download a song.
The chance of a listener deciding to leave a review is of 0.3%
The chance of a listener to fan me is of 0.14%

I began actively submitting, to the portal on February 2nd of 2012. Today is March 15th 2013, that makes for a total of 407 days (58 weeks and 1 Day)
This means that, theoretically, every 11.63 days I get (more like should) off my lazy ass and grace the portal with a song of mine (lol)
This also means that every day brings in 159.62 plays and 14.30 downloads, 0.48 audio reviews and 0.24 fans.

My total audio revenue is of $2.53
This means that on avg., every day earns me $0.006
This also means that to earn $1 I need to get 25678.65 plays first and 2300 downloads.
Considering it took me 407 days to get $2.53 it should take 16086.96 days to earn the $100 minimum to cash out (which would equal to 2,567,865 plays and 230,000 downloads).

Bonus Round based on meticulous scientific calculations and experimentation:
There's a 20% chance that frequenting the audio lounge will turn you gay.
50% chance you are already.
80% of the Audio Lounge users worship the cock.
90% of the Lounge users have made references to cocks in their posts.
100% confirmed that BFP is a slut.
