Okay, random question because I don't like starting a completely new thread:

Assume I started a collab with an other musician/producer. We had a wonderful candle-lit dinner by the sea, and made a song. At some point in the future, I decided to make an album, which includes the song I collaborated with the other guy and put it up on Bandcamp (or some other music selling site). If I made a considerable amount of profit from the album, is the other musician entitled a part (which is agreed on) of the profits?

How about a different situation? A remix, instead. Being a capitalist and all, I released an album which contains a remix of a song by another musician/producer. I have permission by the original musician/producer. Is he entitled to the same thing I just mentioned in the previous situation?

P.S. I'm not actually doing/intending to do this kinda thing, but the thought just kinda came to my head.

Yes, he is entitled to a share of the profits, unless of course he doesn't want a share. It's illegal to make money out of anything that involves even the slightest amount of work from someone else, without their consent.

I'm so clever

So since a few weeks my little 12yo brother is in middle school and he has to follow obligatory music classes, but he doesn't know shit about music so he has to practice a lot. I therefore was so nice to let him use my MIDI keyboard every now and then. Now I've noticed that when he's done practicing and just starts hitting random keys, he sometimes actually plays really cool melodies and chords. So now, whenever he starts doing that, I record the MIDI information so whenever he plays something interesting I can check what it was, clean it up and start building a track around that. Ain't that clever?

TL;DR: I made my little brother a composing machine.

Not really. Copyright law isn't quite as clean cut as the Newgrounds Audio Portal rules.

Oh right, I forgot about Fair Use. But still... IMO it's usually best to make everything original when money is involved because it's simple and you're always able to assure yourself that you're in the green.

I am ENVIOUS. MY 12-year old brother doesn't have an ounce of musical sense in him whatsoever (except that he plays drums which he's admittedly quite good at).

Really, I opened up FL for him one time, showed him the basics, and basically told him "go crazy". And he made this.

It's virtually impossible to make a song out of that. He is musically useless to me :(.

Also, at least in 3 years he might possibly be able to make something half as good as themasterpieces you made at age 15.

For the latecomers who arrived after page 1003, this is the link Step is referring to.

I would also like to put forth a formal request that Step be banned for self-advertisement through reverse psychology.
