The average cost to produce one title for a console system hovers around the 3 million (£1.7m) range.

Think about that for a second, 3 million dollars that is a lot of money and that doesn't include paychecks for the people involved who actually make the game. Now I'm not innocent here I've got utorrent installed just like everybody else but maybe it's time we cool it.

My point being that with the total mobbing of game torrents we have damned ourselves. Companies need money to make games and when we the consumer put of barriers for them we get a lesser quality of game. We have to wait longer for better titles and they prolong release dates. I realize it's hard to compete with free but I think this really needs to stop.

This thread won't help shit and you know it. People will torrent and people will seed. Everything the companies have done have pretty much failed at keeping people from pirating games. Now, I'm not trying to be a troll, but these threads are useless,

Although I agree that stealing games is bad for the industry, what exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Do you honestly think that this thread will start a world wide phenomenon and everybody will stop pirating games?

I agree...To an extent.

Most of the time I buy my games, But if it a old game, there's really no need to buy the game. I mean, that company is not sitting there thinking " Geez, we are making a ton of money on our new games, and not our old"

My point is, They don't really care that much about games they made a few years ago, but they do care about their newer games. Because its a growing process sorta. At first you have to make money on the first game you made, then eventually you make a new game. Then Sales start to drop on the old game, but they are still getting a bit of cash from them. They depend on the games they first made because they finance the future games they make.

I'm starting to confuse myself a little, but anyway, I agree.

Thieves are nothing but scum that can't get anywhere in life

I can understand a poor or homeless person stealing food or clothing

but when things like money, games, etc, that is real scum

Yeah. That's what you say, but in reality, you would steal a game. You probably already have. Most of the time people that do this ( Hackers and Crackers) do it for a new challenge. Also, don't lie to yourself about stuff like stealing because I know that you know that you would steal whether or not you are homeless.

The only thing that really gets on my nerves is when people seriously think they're doing nothing wrong. Like, 'one person stealing a game won't make a difference' or 'the amount people pay for these games is more than profit for them anyway' or the more used 'if I could afford it I'd buy it myself.'

There's going to be piracy no matter what. If people want something badly enough, they'll get it, legality be damned.

I think it is a bit harsh to be saying that piracy and people that use it are scum.

I do not know what the prices are like over in the USA but in the UK the games are like £40-£50 when released and its a few months before you can find it for £20-30 second hand.

I know given the current exchange rate between the GB Pound and US Dollars aint good but when I got it the 360 it was pretty much £1 got you $2 so you can imagine what a new game would cost $80-100.

I think that the gaming industry has got to realise that their prices aint that great and have got to think more about the little guys, my main example is GTA IV the new content that is out for "sale" - I think it is a bit unfair to charge people more for what is virtually an "add-on". Before people go on about thats its Microsoft that have done that, it aint - MS released a press statement that they bought the rights for it, but the cost to gamers is set by he developers and the money goes to them!

But I aint condoning piracy - I just understand why SOME people do it - but I wish to point out that I dont, I wouldnt wanna risk losing quality or having to "chip" my consoles - it ruins it for me.

I don't like people actually doing the torrenting just for themselves. I like people torrenting it for the benefit of other people.

One exception for me is burned Wii games. You can actually have people come to your house and install a chip that can read DVD+R Wii game files. How tight is that?!

I'm not promoting anything. Still, his only argument for not stealing is that someone else needs money.

Does downloading games that don't have copyright protection anymore count as stealing?

I forget where I read it, but there are several third world countries that are completely dependent on piracy. Without the hackers making copies of the games, the stores wouldn't be able to sell anything for an affordable price, and they would run out of buisness. It's also really big in China, and other eastern countries.

Piracy should just stay where it is right now. At a perfect balence.

I'm all for pirating, but not for modern systems. I mean, I can't even find a decent SNES, and certainly can't afford to get some of the great games on that system. Is it wrong for me to want to play a game for a system that's not even in circulation anymore? Same for PS1 and N64. I actually own the systems, but I can't find a single place other than Gamer's in the entire city that even would look at these games, let alone sell them. And there's no way in hell I'm paying $80.00 (not an exaggeration, it is the most expensive game there) for the only FF7 at Gamer's. It's been there like 5 years. Their selection is pretty awful too. I've never seen the really good games there. I've never seen Xenogears or Castlevania: SOTN (It's on PS3's shop channel, though, and yes, I did pay for it) or FF9 (it's my favorite FF). I've never seen Perfect Dark or Turok or Super Smash Bro's or Goldeneye (just the shitty 007 game), or even Rampage World Tour. In short, I don't want to waste a ridiculous amount of time hunting these 'must plays' down. Now PS2, 360, PS3, Wii, Gamecube? I'll gladly shell out 50 bucks for a decent game. But seriously, who could possibly have the time to track down the original Crono Trigger or Breath of Fire games? I think those games should just simply be let go by the gamemakers.

I believe that people will keep pirating games and movies. So, we should not stop it. Instead, game companies should make stuff no one can pirate. Physical objects. I'm talking about merchandise, game cases signed by the developers, game competitions (with entrance fees) etc. You see all that crap you can buy that has Hannah Montana's face on it? Well, she has the right idea. People will steal her music, but they can't steal a lamp with her face on it. At the very least, they should sell shirts with thier VG characters. I'm telling you, if they made a shirt based on Cave Story, Half Life, Duke Nukem, Hitman, or another one of my favourite series, I'd buy it. The only reason my entire wardrobe isn't VG related is because I can't find enough clothes that are.

Another option is to release every game for free download, but with ads. We get every tv show basically for free, but we have to contend with ads. So, if every game supported itself with ads, every game would be free. Furthermore, companies would only get paid for games that sell more, so we would see a general drop in poorly made games. EA did this awhile back, with Farcry, PoP, and two other games. They rereleased them for free, but with ads.

My PSN ID is xscoot. Crazy, huh?

In addition to my previous opinion I think that pirating new games is not worth it and just should be stopped - but when you can regard pirating as using the same CD on different computers then I disagree. The reason being is that, for example, on Age of Empires you can play multiplayer without te CD, so me and my brother use to create a server for just us two and then play a game with either a few other people or AI "gamers" and we could only do this by installing it on two different PCs.

But as mentioned in a previous post alot of the games that I do "pirate" are old games that are either:

a) Not made anymore
b) Cost too much second hand because demand is higher than supply (because of the point above)
c) The game was not retailed very well where I live.

Sometimes I think pirating has both a positive and an obvious negative effect. The positive effect, for me anyways, is that I may download an old game (i.e. COD1) and this actually me made buy COD1 and COD 2 (when it came out) because I enjoyed it that much!
