I was just watching a video from CES on Xbox Live when they looked at something called Kodu. Its a programming language game builder which is for kids. Although the gfx aren't much and it looks quite basic (from what I can tell anyway) it still looks like it'd be worth trying out.

"Kodu is a new visual programming language made specifically for creating games. It is designed to be accessible for children and enjoyable for anyone. The programming environment runs on the Xbox, allowing rapid design iteration using only a game controller for input.

The core of the Kodu project is the programming user interface. The language is simple and entirely icon-based. Programs are composed of pages, which are broken down into rules, which are further divided into conditions and actions. Conditions are evaluated simultaneously.

The Kodu language is designed specifically for game development and provides specialized primitives derived from gaming scenarios. Programs are expressed in physical terms, using concepts like vision, hearing, and time to control character behavior. While not as general-purpose as classical programming languages, Kodu can express advanced game design concepts in a simple, direct, and intuitive manner."

Gameplay Demo

Not to sure about the girl playing it, it feels like she's being told what to say by another person or whatever. I'm wondering if id be able to recreate Super Mario 64 with this, that'd be pretty cool. :P

What do you guys make of it?

It's, it's horrible! It's constricted, needlessly complicated and is obviously microsoft's feeble attempt to cash in on the LittleBigPlanet craze. Not to mention that if you swap the vowels you get kudo (koodo)

So Kodu is a programming language which is in the form of a "game". It still resembles LBP in the sense of the creation aspect. On another note, would anyone really be interesting in programming with this thing. It would be fun for a bit maybe, but then you realize you are doing nothing useful. If someone really wanted to learn to program they would take up a popular language, maybe starting at VB. If that person isn't into programming then they wouldn't "play it". all this is really good for is teaching the basics but what can you make in it really. I just built a game of Missile Command a week ago for LBP. Can't do that in Kodu.

Actually yes you can make a game like Missile Command. You could make a FPS if you wanted to. LBP is a level editor. Kodu started out as Boku which was researching being done to try and teach kids programming language Microsoft really isn't trying to copy LBP nor did they consider with this. Just because they are similar doesn't mean they are going for the same thing.

Being Microsoft and all, I think shes a 60 year old female but in the body of a 12 year old. Anyway, the game creator looks good, its a brilliant invention for kids, but again its nothing like Little Big Planet.

Kodu is just supposed to be XNA Game Studio Jr.

Its just another way to get people to make games (this time for those with no programming experience).

Alternatively, one could learn how to program and use XNA. It's really not as hard as it seems.

Its actually easier than making console applications people make when they start programming. Very much easier.

Maybe so. from the gameplay video we've only seen things like creating objects and assigning commands in the form of (condition)>(action). I would also assume that you could submit your creation online and download others. I also assume there would be a play mode and create mode. It's a good tool for teaching the basics of programming and once you know the concepts you can apply it to any language. The problem is that this is marketed as a game, not an instructional/educational tool. It will no doubt give you more freedom then LBP simply because you can program "advanced" AI but as a game I doubt it will go far. Good luck to Microsoft on making this work (or at the very least profitable). Side note: I think that since this is being touted as the LBP killer will do it harm (since most people will then assume it's a silly attempt to cash in.
