So I'm arguing with my friend over whether or not Jimi Hendrix was an influential person in music. Being the major music aficianado I am (and that I'm a HUGE fan of him), I tell him how his music helped make some of the genres like rock and hard rock (which he listens to), he counters with "Well, it was the 70's, pretty much every band influenced music in that genre." He then said that "His career would've been a lot more influential if he wasn't stoned throughout most of it." He then told me that he didn't like ANY of his songs. I put this to the test by playing damn near EVERY Hendrix song I have: Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary (my personal favorite) Are You Experienced....he just said they all suck.

I then asked him what bands he thought were influential to music. He said the Trashmen.

-_-

Anyway, what does NG think of Jimi? If you've honestly never heard a song by him (which I doubt), here's The Wind Cries Mary, the closest version to the studio recording I could find.

wow, lol. that guy you talk to is a genious. seriously, does he think before he speaks? or does he just say stupid stuff for mind numbing effect? yes jimmy is a huge influence on music, OF COURSE! now, that said, many peoples influences are relatively short sighted in that they dont look back more than 10- 20 years in the past for good music. Hell im a joe satriani fan myself(if you didnt already guess), joe has stated that jimmy was THE reason for him committing himself to the guitar. now joe is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitar players in the world, both in skill and musical talent. to say that jimmy isnt influencial is just WTF stupid.

I like Purple Haze but that's about it. Judging by how well-known he is, he must be influential in some way.

His blues album is the greatest piece of music I've come across in the past year. I can listen to it over and over again.

Well, he's right, The Trashmen were important. However, he;s wrong about good ol' Jimi. Give your friend a slap from me please. Two, if that is possible.

Hendrix is about as influential as you can get. He completely changed people's minds about what was possible with a guitar. Sure, he wasn't the only one, but probably the biggest. Also, tell your friend that it wasn't the 70s. Band of Gypsys was the only Hendrix album to come out in 1970.

How would he have been more influential if he wasn't doing drugs? I'd like to hear his explanation on that.

Acid Rock comes from Psychedelic Rock, which came from The 13th Floor Elevators, a white band. That Chuck Berry was black doesn't matter - because he was black.

Even if he isn't a fan of his music, there's no arguing that jimi hendrix was one of the most influential musicians of all time

regardless of whether or not you think he was any good or not, he had so many techniques that distinguished himself, like his use of the wah-wah, the chord techniques he used, or his use of his thumb to play certain chords. Plus, his stage presence was completely different from what everyone was doing at the time, and I think that influences a lot of musicians today.

I think to dislike him is one thing, but to deny that he was influential is just stupid.

J'm not a fan of Jimi but that doesn't mean that he didn't influence music today, some even think that along with rock and Hard rock, Jimi was also an influence towards Heavy Metal.

"Well, it was the 70's, pretty much every band influenced music in that genre."

Alot of bands were influential, but which bands do you remember that were influential, the only 2 that I can think of right now would be Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix
He then said that "His career would've been a lot more influential if he wasn't stoned throughout most of it."
Hahaha, see, him being stoned and (partially) him dying of Overdose(?) made him even MORE influential than he could have been

I then asked him what bands he thought were influential to music. He said the Trashmen.

Who the fuck's The Trashmen?

seriously
note, i didn't read the other replies.

In my opinion I think nobody can make a big effect on music. It takes a generation of a genre to make a huge impact. Jimi Hendrix was a great artist and very creative giving us great masterpieces like purple haze and such.

Oh believe me, I let him know that on many occasions.

UPDATE: I now have told him that his Dream Theater was influenced by Jimi's acid rock. He called me a fucking moron, I called him one back and that he should learn his music facts before he accuses me of lying, and he left. Mission accomplished, I won.

Your friend is ridiculous. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential musical talents of all time. I watched a video of him playing at the Montery Pop Festival in 1967. He was humping a speaker, headbanging, while playing the guitar solo to "Wild Thing" with his feet. That was fucking amazing. Btw, my favorite Jimi Hendrix song is "Bold as Love". I don't like Jimi Hendrix's birthday because it's two days before George Harrison's death.

Sorry, xports.
