Companies which may die in 2009 2009-01-13 09:26:31 Reply

It's sad, these hard times are causing a lot of people to lose jobs, and companies to close their doors and end their business for good. According to this article, readers are predicting some tech vendors that won't survive 2009. They all give very valid reasons, and while it would suck for these companies to fold, it's possible some of them could end up doing so.

Some of the names of the companies that you are about to hear might be a bit shocking.

VMWare - They make some of the best virtual machine software out there
Symantec - Say goodbye to Norton Antivirus
Citrix Sytems - Like VMWare, but battling them and Microsoft for machine virtualization
Sun Microsystems - Prepare to say "so long" to Java
AMD - This means ATI Graphics and AMD Chips might disappear
CA - Security and Storage Software
Juniper Networks - Not sure what this company is
Salesforce.com - Not sure what this company is either
McAfee - Another Anti-Virus could go under
Check Point - A security company
NetApp - Security management
and finally
Novell - This was a very influential company in the 90s and it still is.

Wouldn't this just be shitty if we lost all of these companies?
Not all of them are important, of course, but if we lose Novell, AMD, Novell, McAfee, Symantec, or Sun, I can guarantee you this, the markets across the world will go into an unforeseen downfall, probably worse than anyone could ever imagine.

Now imagine if more than 1 of those companies folds. Boy, oh boy, we could be so fucked we don't even know it!

Hmm, at least three of these are relevant to me. This is no good.

Novell - This was a very influential company in the 90s and it still is.

I totally just forgot what this company does.

Now imagine if more than 1 of those companies folds. Boy, oh boy, we could be so fucked we don't even know it!

If woolworths UK can do it, who the hell knows what will happen.

Think this way: If they die, someone else is gonna lend people graphics cards.
Because if they stop working and we have no graphics cards, ECONOMY EDN!

Still, if Java stopped, all those Java-based games would stop working. No big deal, i know, but there's a few that are pretty nice.

This is what would probably happen.

With AMD and ATi gone, the only left brands are Intel are Nvidia. With no competition they would raise prices. Shit would cost a lot and it would cause problems. We can't let AMD nor ATi die. Sure Intel and Nvidia have better performance, but AMD and ATi are cheaper and that's what's nice about them.

As long as the companies that make String-Cheese are safe, I'm ok with things.

But god help you all if I can't get my string-cheese...

Also, Norton sucks. I'll be glad when that buggy software has finally disappeared off the face of the earth.

Seconded. What with the success of the 48xx series and the new Phenoms, the only way they can go is up.

God everything uses Java. If Sun goes under the internet will turn into a pile of shit.
And my comp's got an AMD CPU on top of that.

As for the antivirus companies, maybe it's because most virus programmers know how to get arround those 2.

Ironically your "wealth" is constituted on the actual hard work of many citizens of third-world countries, and if by "wealth" you mean soley currency... hahaha...

Have you gone to a public school? Do you plan on going to a public college? Those are Socialist ideologies. People who don't go to school pay taxes for a large cut of people who attend college that may or may not drop out.

And in the end, you can't call someone a "lazy bum" when theres machines taking over their work. I think its good change. We will all be able to relax, work if we want to make a tad extra cash, and aspire to our aspirations.

I like the fact that many large companies are pulling out of the giant scheme. All of them covered in that list I could quite frankly do quite fine with.

I'm just happy to be able to see this change happening. I might be dead by the time we see its full-effect, but i'll be glad knowing we're going in this direction.

As for my analysis on the companies going down, here:

AMD/ATI
AMD got lucky when they absorbed ATI because their chipsets suck, but now they have ATI to fall back on. I don't think they'll go under anytime soon so long as they keep the vid. card business up

Norton/Mcafee
Bloated crap they've been selling us for the past 15 years. Good riddance. I worked on a friend's computer, got rid of norTON, and installed ESET nod32 Smart Security, and the thing runs so much faster. I wouldn't accept their software if someone paid me to use it because it would limit the functionality of my computer.

Sun
The only thing negative about them expiring is OpenOffice, but I bet some group will carry it on.

As for the rest, I could simply care less about them.

Oh, that's a long list of companies. I suppose more companies will be dying this year as comparred to the last one, with the economy crashdown and all, but no doubt many new ones will be born and provide new valuable services to all. Out of the companies in that list, and out of the ones I know about, I can't find a single one I'd miss if they dissapeared. Hope they all go down, and new better ones rise in their places. :)

Why would AMD be going? They're still being very successful. Wow, nVidia and Intel beat them a few times? They're still getting a hell of a lot of money.

Just because the company disappeared, doesn't mean their products will stop working.
ATI cards would become rarer, and rarer, and eventually be worth a lot of money. Java applications will still be used and made.

The death of those companies listed would hardly affect me, hmm..

Although I am using an AMD processor and ATI card somewhere, I doubt they would just stop running if the demise of said companies were to happen.

I have my doubts about AMD dying though.. Are they in a extra-difficult economical crisis?
