So, I'm moving to the city in about a week's time and I'm having a small going away party at my home. Mostly, it'll just be friends from work, and mostly, it'll be people over the legal drinking age (18).

I'm a responsible person, and I've taken it upon myself to ensure no one drinks and drives, no one is drinking underage and that sort of thing. Fair enough... right?
Well I told one work friend about this party, and she's about 16 years old. She's glad to hear that I'm not just having the party at the pub, so she can come. At around this point I was getting implications from her that she was going to drink. I told her that I wouldn't let her consume alcohol in my house, let alone under my responsibility. She took this as a joke, the whole "you're kidding me, right?". To this I replied "That's not how I roll." Apparently, you can't use that line without coming off as a joker, and she continued to think that I was joking.

It was only until someone else pointed out that no, I was not joking that she realised I was being serious. She was frustrated and begun on this whole spiel how it's "no big deal" and how I "won't get caught" for supplying alcohol to underage drinkers. It's obvious she's already got a taste for alcohol.

I don't have a problem with that, even though I didn't really start drinking alcohol until a few days before I turned 18, it's her life to decide what she wants. But the thing that I've got a problem with is that at my party, I'm the one that's responsible for her drinking. She's legally still a child and the responsibility of her parents, so if she drinks, it'll come down on me if police somehow find out, it'll come down on me if something were to happen to her while drunk, and it's not just her that I'll have to deal with, but her parents too.

Sure, call me a party-pooper, but it's just not an option I want to choose, after all, I just want to make sure that everyone attending will have a good time.

I'm not a bad person for being responsible, am I?

This is the part where you all say "no, no. You did the right thing there, if it were up to me, I would have done the same thing. Nothing kills a party like drunken minors, especially when it's a party that your boss is attending."

You're not being a bad person--you're taking responsibility and making sure that everyone's safe, no one's breaking the law, and covering your ass.

That's extremely responsible, and if she can't understand that you're trying to make it so that you don't get into trouble, and nor does she, then it's her own problem.

I commend you for being responsible.

I totally get what you mean.

I never drink, so I'm always left to be responsible for the people who do.

Well you are actually making the right choice. But you still may get in trouble because she is around alcohol> i mean i Don't want you to not invite her, but of her parents found out that she was still even around the stuff they might get mad, or if the police show up( just to make sure there is no illegal activity) it would be pretty awkward explaining that she is at the party but is not going to drink.I don't your friend to think that you're not her friend any more but it would be something that a true friend would do. If i was og legal age to drink and i had a minor friends who wanted to come but not to drink i would not let them> Not to be mean but to make sure nothing bad happens. People might take it the wrong if she's there. Just don't want your party to get crashed.

You havn't done anything wrong, this is the absolute just thing to do. Like you said, you'll take the blame if something happens, and the law is the law. Tell her she cannot attend if she does not accept this rule.

If she can't have a good time at your party without being intoxicated then she doesn't deserve to be their. And you did do the right thing. You seem like a good, responsible individual and I wish you luck in this situation.

You're just being conscious and responsible, and that's just what you should do. The issue with her parents and the police, which you also mentioned, would be terrible if anything happens.

When I was her age I would have been pissed off at you and thought you were being a bit of a dick, but I guess these days I would see it as being more responsible - it's up to you.

To be honest I think most people over the age of 16 are responsible enough when drinking as long as they know their limits. I've known 18 year old first timers get completely hammered and have horrible nights in the presence of 15/16 year olds with a bit more experience having a great time.

Minds shall break and bring a clear sky.

Normally I'd agree, but with the retarded drinking age of 21 in the states, there's been a couple of instances where I've been denied alcohol because the person didn't want to be "responsible." To which I began to ponder, it's not like that person is providing alcohol specifically for me, so why would it be their responsibility if I messed up somehow? Wouldn't that be my own fault?

Unless she acts for specific alcohol just for herself, I think you're sort of in the wrong.

also, jailbait.

I'm not attracted to her in the slightest. And I think her parents probably know that she's a drinker.

I'm not going to uninvite her simply because of the alcohol, for I have a dastardly plan. Get the alcohol, keep the alcohol in a cooler or in a separate room. I'll supply soft drinks for the 3/4 under age people that might be coming, and if she goes to get a drink and returns with an alcoholic drink, I'll take it off her. Most of the people at the party will be pretty mature anyway, so I could probably ask them to let me know if any of the <18 people try to drink. Besides, they'll be going home if they don't like it.

I was just hoping that this doesn't turn me into the boring uncle figure now, seeing as I've never really been a part of the teenage social group.

I honestly think you're being a bit too hard on her to be honest. Individuals are legally allowed to drink alcohol under 18 in the care of a responsible adult at home to my knowledge.

As long as you look out for her and don't let her drink too much you should be fine.

Also this has a bit of a "I'm lazy and don't want to watch my friend" tone. Which is FINE. It's your party.

But I would make it up to her in some way to let her know that you're still cool.

You were definitely in the right. I started drinking at 15, but when you're that age you find ways of getting hold of it (like having a nicely groomed 'tashe, and posing as being 18. I still can't believe that worked). However, if it's your do and she's under age then you don't want to be explaining what happened to her parents.

I probably would be tempted to let her get away with stealing beer when I wasn't looking, but that's because I'm a bad person.

I comment your moral fibre

It's not moral to force a person to drink by themselves. If you don't want her drinking then you shouldn't have invited her to a party where there's drinking. That's a bit mean imo. Wave it in front of their faces with your drunken happiness.

They'll just leave and drink in a more dangerous situation.

Way to go.

What if she goes to get a drink and drinks it while she's over there.

Well, it seems you and Shawn are right, but while I'm concerned about this one individual, there are others around the 16/17 age range, and if I let her drink, I'll have to let the others drink, and I'd have to be responsible for all of them, and I'd like to be able to relax and have a few drinks myself, without having to keep tabs on how many drinks other people have had. Besides, zero is a very simple number to keep track of.

Why did you invite underage people to a party with drinking.

They're going to end up drinking. Period. Or smoking pot.
