i have a question; numerous people have cited natural immunities as an obstacle for extinction by disease, but while its possible, why would there automatically be some sort of immunity for a a new, or modified, disease?
methinks too much Hollywood is to blame.

The way it was stated, yes it is. There is no real debate that warming is happening, but the idea that it's man made has never been proven.

Ha this is like right from this histroy channel thing that i watched. Yes those are the top 5 ways that humans could die, but there are other ways that are more unlikely. Some of these are getting swallowed by a roaming black hole.

The thing is not how the earth will end, but when. The sun is eventually going to go supernova and when that happens in the next 5 billion years the earth will be gone. The oceans will evaporate the mountains will turn in to magma.

By that time we will either be super advanced or extinct. Right now we are on the eve of changing from a type 0 civilization to a type 1 civilization. That is we are moving from a civilization that uses fossil fules to one that harnesses the power of nature. Many challenges hinder this transition. We have to overcome this so as a civilization so we can advance and not go extinct.

Ever heard of the hydrogen car?

Wow, he has a (funny) but very serious point >.>

What if we end up like the jetsons? Risen 500 miles above land and whatnot?

That would be fuckin crazy!

I think that is the transition to a red giant, I think your looking for. Not quite a s dramatic as a supernova, just the sun growing a bit.
I can't really say if the sun is a star to burn out (brown/white dwarf) or if it's big enough to go supernova.

The reality is that there is no clear boundary between the Earth and outer space. As you climb in altitude, the atmosphere gets less dense as you go. You need to get about 350 km (220 miles) above the Earth's surface to get to the point where a spacecraft can orbit the planet.

We'd be in space. If I remember the Jetsons lived just above the clouds. Which can go from 0-60,000 feet (or just over 10 miles)

Serious post is serious.

Correct, one wonders if we could evolve to hotter conditions or just die off.

Isn't that already a problem? Doctors overprescribing antibiotics have led to some very resistant strands of virusus and crap?

Ok for the Nuke issue.....

I am sick and tired of everyone getting their panties in a wad over a Nuke.

1. The OP is full of shit. Russia now has less then 7000 intact warheads, out of that maybe 1,100 can still be used.

2. Even the US is down to about 9000 usable warheads and these are being dismantled everyday.

3. No country, not matter how crazy you think they are or how much you think some horrible accident can happen will ever happen.

Please stop freaking out about nukes, we have plenty of other things that can kill you. And I would love to see where the OP got all this info from because it looks like it is bullshit to me.

I'm a global warming agnostic. This is especially valuable for debate purposes.
There are few things we could do to prevent global warming that wouldn't otherwise have beneficial impacts on the environment.

Carcinogens are in our air and water at record levels and climbing.
The end of mankind will likely come from so many people dying of cancer that the remaining persons will revert to a more agrarian/hunter-gatherer society in the wake of civilizations downfall.

the argument seems to have been since some people have natural immunities to certain diseases (i.e. AIDS) then a there should be some people with natural immunities to the next super-virus/bacteria/parasite, etc... even though it isn't necessarily true.

but i wonder if a drug resistant bug will be the cause of the next pandemic.

okay the world can't be destryed o\because of commets becuase NASA has to blast it away from it's course.
also pluage is not an option beause with todays midicine and technology it can be healed before too much damage is done.
all the pther options are possible but i'm pretty dam suspecting that it won't be more than three years till there will be a nucelear world war and we shall all die... damn, i really hope that Diablo III eill come out till then...

Massive solar flare minus Earth's magentosphere equals Scorched Earth?

I picked up on it. I'm taking astronomy right now.

And incidentally, the next big one is predicted to be - you guessed it! - December 21, 2012. This is in fact the only armageddon prediction from astrology that has my professor worried. :)

I think you don't give enough credit to human ingenuity. We could prevent the sun from being blocked off by Ash. We clean the exhaust from coal plants by ionizing metal grids that the smoke passes along, forcing ash, carbon and most toxins from bring excreted in the smoke stack. That is why a power plant puts white clouds into the air and not black clouds.

To eliminate Ash from the atmosphere, were could construct large ionized towers, or ionizing equipment on c-17s and have them fly around, non-stop.

It may not be perfect and clean up will take a while. But humanity would servive.

At 1/10/09 09:15 PM, RussianGiant wrote: Top 5 threats.

#1. Global warming

Even though you might not notice it global warming is starting to affect the public b burning our body's skin. even though there are major coplaints from the public the governments don't do a shit to stop it but continue to focus on other stuff like their military. Seriously if the governments leaders want to conquer the world the in the end they probably will only get a planet comparable to Venus.
If west Antarctica ice melted then that's 20ft rise of sea level if the Greenland ice melts away thats 20ft more of sea level so that's 40ft of extra sea level. major cities will get flooded from that like London, Miami, St.Petersburg. Do you really think the government would try building a 25metre wall around Florida? Even lowland countries like Belgium will be almost completely covered in water!
We need to freakin stop humanity from destroying itself. We need to stop going on the path of business this time.
This is a simple question do you want to live or die?

The human race has survived before with large climate shifts. Do you not think that the Earth has not gone thru this same heating and cooling trend before? If it reaches to the point where there is massive flooding, it's still not going to wipe out the human race. We will adapt.

#2. plague

this is partly a way man can destroy itself and partly nature.
the newest avian flu diseases can turn into something like the black death or even deadlier! so humans can perish under it all. simple as that.
also humans have experimented for many years with biological weapons for example bofore in the Soviet Union scientists took common small pox that kills about 30% who don't use medicine and turn that 30% into 100% chance of death. even more scary is that we have the internet... and that can help ordinary citizens make/duplicate diseases...
Also imagine some idiot/fool/maniac/some over religious guy that becomes a biologist thinks its his mission to kill everyone (including himself) by creating a extremely deadly disease that is as easy to catch as the common cold (D:) ?

Ok first, you can't design a new disease in your household using internet recipes. Second, I seriously doubt there has ever been a virus with 100% fatality rate, and I seriously doubt there ever will be. Will there be diseases out there with extremely high fatality rates? Probably but nothing that will drive us to extinction. You fail again.

#3. nuclear wars...

if any superpower starts a nuclear war then we are all dead for almost certain. Just 20 nukes can cause enough debree to block out the sun. The USA is scared of terrorists making 1 nuke and using it when they should be more aware of the 24,000 nukes Russia has and the 13,000 China has (im not completely sure how many but i know its in 10,000 area). the thing is a nuke war can be triggered accidentally by, lets say for example a commercial satellite being launched with a rocket. one of the superpowers might think this is a nuclear attack and guess what they'll do, they'll make a nuclear attacks on that country.
we have enough nuclear bombs to kill about 8 billion people but we only have about 6 billion people...

A nuclear war isn't going to reach every square inch of the world. There are also many nuclear shelters dug by various countries around the world. So while it may be catastrophic to the human population, in the worst case scenario, extinction no.

#4. comets...

every day comets will fly around our solar system but few are big enough to hit planet Earth and make a crater. but before scientists have predicted that in April friday the 13th 2026 a huge meteor will come closer to Earth than our satellites surrounding it.

Which has like a 1 in 45,000 chance of actually colliding.

then the same day in 2036 the meteor will return this time defiantly hitting Earth.

Ok where do you get this information from?

But we have a plan to stop this governments are planning to construct a satellite with a gravitational pull that will just edge the meteor away from us so it wont enter Earth.

Again, where is this information from? I've never heard of us creating a satilite with the gravitational pull to adjust a comet's path.

If this meteor lands then it will be like the dinosaur age where the sun was blocked out and we desperately search for food.

You do understand that in this scenario, mammals have the advantage here, as can be seen with when the dinosaurs became extinct.

you know those movies where people see a meteor falling for a while well that doesnt happen, in fact if 1 meteor of that size and that speed entered Earth the flames wouldnt turn red, white, orange, purple, green or any kind of known color. it would be so hot that anything within about a 1000 sq mile radius would burn from the intensity of light and heat!

Source?

if we simply blow it up then billions of smaller meteorites will fall down on Earth probably causing more damage than just 1 big meteor.

The theory behind this, is when smaller bodies enter the Earth's atmosphere, they tend to burn up. So if we have a choice between a 2 mile wide meteor, or 2,000 1 meter wide meteors entering the atmosphere, I'll go with the 2000 as chances are a vast majority will never impact.

#5. supervolcanoes...

if you didnt know then there are over 40 volcanoes that if erupted then they would make possible extinction of mankind. the last time a supervolcano erupted there were barely any humans left on earth. this was so close to extinction that scientists believe that only 33 reproducing females survived the whole thing! if a supervolcano erupted on Earth then its definate possibility of extinction on man (and female).

Source. I have a hard time believing the accuracy of these numbers. And even if they are accurate, look at the human population levels, how spread out they are now, and the technology levels compared to what you say happened last time.

slightly more than half of these possibilities are of mankind killing itself but we can control the controllable if we can stop a giant comet then we can stop ourselves!

p.s damn thats a giant post
