Do you like Operation Ivy?
I think that something a little op ivy inspired would be cool.
Like model one of the paintings after the guy from the CD case.

Hmm. "Energy" is a fantastic CD. I think one of my later paintings in this series will have a skanking guy.
I do own a T-shirt with their logo, but I never really liked how rough cut it looked, and ska-core never appealed to me as much as traditional and 2tone sounds do. They are more hardcore punk than anything anyway.

These circles are getting colored to match the MOD target, symbol reminiscent of early punk in the UK. The Clash, The Who, and the New York Dolls are associated with this symbol sometimes.

If he's gonna be punk rock, you'd better tear his clothes more and put a bunch of 'Dead Kennedys' and 'The Ramones' patches on him.
Maybe even throw in a subtle 'Anarchy in the UK' reference in the background?

As for your trumpet guy, since you've made him black, you should put in more colour. Maybe blend the checkered background into colour? Unless that's too rasta for you.

I never liked all the flash on some of these posers covering themselves in spikes looking like johnny napalm from guitar hero. And I grew up in a very punkrock scene, complete with doc martin boots... but I always thought a more modest look was better.

i can make it WAY more colorfull.

I definitely plan on going over it with more layers later to make the hat more dull. especially on the checkered part. seems like more of a job for the brushes than the markers. As to how i will make it more dimensional, I don't know yet, and it's still too wet for me to add another layer on the hat tonight.

Thanks for the tip!

I don't think they come as sets. I think these were bought individually, Small ones costing $4 or $6, the larger ones probably cost $10 or $12

Artist J, you sound like a SHARP or SPAR to me... I'm a SPAR myself, used to run with the trads (yellow bracers) out in Eureka CA. I like the guitar guy, although personally I don't care for the sunglasses much, that's more a matter of personal taste than artistic criticism. I really like how the ska-trumpeter piece is coming along

I have a tiny "SHARP" pin, but i'm not to into that to the point where I identify myself with it. Although I am considering getting a Ska Unity tattoo with a whole band playing different instruments of different races, I'm really not a skinhead. I even had really long hair for a while. As much as I love the early skinhead movements, the later, racist movements covered up the good and ruined it. I regret to tell you I don't even know what SPAR stands for.

SPAR = Skinheads and Punks against Racism. I'm not a skin myself, but I'm a punk that takes a bit better care of himself than the crustys, nor am I as out there as the anarchos or the scenesters. Oi music (Buzzcocks, Street Dogs etc.), ska, and even a bit of psychobilly makes it into the mix. The now lost past of original proletariat skinhead culture is definitely overshadowed by the racist movement, it's good to hear someone that still remembers the old ways.

Thanks buddy!

Tryin' to get a slow gradient transition in the checkers.
But I want some contrast between the background and the black dude,
But I feel like I'm kind of out of color choices to use without having some edges lose definition.

At the same time, I want the more colored background to be subtler.
As bright as it is, it's now fighting for the viewers attention.

how can I fix this?
Help! I think I rushed into this whole bright color thing!

realized yellow would look bad behind the blue targets so I used the markers to blend into a gradient. The white marker picks up other colors very easily. When going over the inside of the red circles to give them a reflection, It would pick up alot of red. I would then use that pinky color to create the first fleshtone base layer. The Skin needs a lot of work yet though, on both paintings.

Time for a well deserved break.

I like what you're doing here, very cool stuff. I've always liked art that was associated with ska, it's very cool and classy, you know?

Top work there! I assumed you were older, then I saw your hand! You're a youngling! There's plenty of room for art work like this in the world, and I don't reckon you'll have a hard time selling it.

its unfortunate that you weren't able to do the gradient thing for the bg of the trumpet guy. the guy himself looks very good, but the bg is a little ugly. the punk guy is great though.
