For gaming graphics, especially shooters in this case, I prefer vibrant visuals a bit more than gritty.

Yeah, gritty instills a sense of dreariness and war, such as in Gears of War and Call of Duty.

But then the colors look drab to me at times, and I prefer a bit more color and lighting.

Halo is always a blast to play in terms of visuals because its a bit more friendly to your eyes in my opinion. The great HDI lighting also adds to the effect. Halo's graphics are vibrant and pleasing in my opinion, but it also captures feeling too. Some maps feel gloomy and eerie than others. The animations are smooth as well, so it adds to that great presentation.

Day of Defeat: Source also has very vibrant graphics, and it's notably smooth in terms of animations. Like Team Fortress 2, the graphics are colorful. Yet it's still realistic and it feels like an intense war game to me. I love DoD: S visuals, with bold colors, and the HDI lighting once again taking full affect.

On other hand, games like Call of Duty are gritty on purpose. Call of Duty is actually more realistic in terms of color, yet it turns out as a bit drab to me. The lighting is great, but then the lighting doesn't help the visuals look vibrant. Along with the color pallet, this is the reason why some people complain Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty, and Gears of War 2 are "all gray " or something, along with the fact that there's a lot of concrete in all of these games.

Murky and dark tones are dramatic when done well, but then it feels dreary and bland to be sometimes.

That's just my opinion.

What do you prefer?

Gritty? Or Vibrant?

It depends entirely on the type of game, for example, Gears of War is gritty because its a dark, violent action game, and that theme wouldn't work well with a different style game, such as Viva Pinata.

I'd like to point out that in most of the Marine machines they generally are quite bright and vibrant, while the SAS missions tend to be night based and in dark places making it seem gritty,

I would really like to see a game that has both. Something where the level can go from vibrant to gritty within a matter of seconds. Portal does this, to an extent.

Fuck the Angryfaic challenge.
Oh yes, that is a Nazi eagle thing with the BNP ribbon under it for those that are blind.

Vibrant. Gritty entails realism, and I prefer my games be as unrealistic as possible.

I like them both. Games like Katamari and Gears work these elements really well.

Gritty I like for shooters and vibrant for unrealistic games

Gritty, REALLY gritty. So gritty that you feel like you're going to fall through the floor every time you take a step.

Vibrant. I loved Mirror's Edge, because I barely saw any brown or dull grey at all.

I prefer vibrant, though I didn't think it worked too well for Gears of War 2, they should have kept the colours the same.

Yeah, well maybe a little browns and grays are good once in a while.

I had to turn my TV's brightness along with the in-game brightness down to minimum to avoid getting fucking migraines while playing it.

yeah, gritty though makes things more dramatic, it makes things looks almost greyscale, whereas vibrant makes things look more, happy i guess would be the word, and brings colors out

i prefer gritty in fps and dramatic games, and vibrant in sports games

In return you get blinding white light.
