That's the thing! How can they hear voices if they've never heard a REAL voice before?

Oh god. I don't even know. Its just so natural for those of us who are not deaf, I couldn't even imagine how they would think.

At least give credit to where you got the idea

http://www.explosm.net/comics/1500/

It all depends how it manifests itself, it may be split personality or voices.

Well, actually, I had this same converstation with a friend. I asked him if his thoughts were in spanish or english. And then this exact question came up. We ended up in the conclusion that it blows our fucking minds.

Wonder where you got that from?

I say no, cause their mind would probably refuse to "hear" the sounds.

I got the idea from today's explosm comic, alright? I didn't think that was relevant to the question, but whatever. The question stands. Continue discussion.

Now that you said where you got the idea from, I dont know if they would or not...they would hear something inside their head, but how can we say it a voice? Because they cant hear it might be something completely different than anything we know, but we cant know because if they are deaf and schitzophrenic (idk the spelling) they probably couldnt tell us what they experienced

I don't know but I would think they wouldn't be able to. I think since they have never heard a voice before then they can't have one in their head. That's assuming they were born deaf. If they became deaf after living for so long then I'm sure they will hear "The Voice" when they think.

I wonder if a deaf person would be more likely to hear voices in their head? I know if I am in dead silence, alone, for prolonged periods of time I sometimes think I hear snippets of voices on occasion.

They tell me to kill things.

But remember that this person has never heard a voice before. You have. So you really can't use personal experience as a source here.

Try imagining a totally new form of communication. If you can't, I doubt they can.

Voices are made up, even if involuntary, so no.

Non-deaf schizos "hearing voices" has nothing to do with what their ears actually perceive, so it follows that deaf schizos "hearing voices" would have nothing to do with what their ears can't perceive.

It is an interesting question though. It's basically the same thing as asking how you would describe color to a person that was born blind. What kind of mental pictures would a blind person even be capable of conjuring?

Yes, they would, because schizophrenia is all in the person's head.

It can be reversed as well. How would a blind person be able to explain his disability. If it's all he's known, he wouldn't think of it as a disability. And if you asked him to tell you what it looks like, what would he say? He wouldn't say "Black". As that is a word that the seeing use to describe the absence of colour, and if you don't know colour, you can't describe the absence of it. It would only be what is...

interesting...

Schizophrenia is repeated auditory hallucinations, which have nothing to do with your ears picking up vibrations. You'll still hear the voices, and nothing else.

But how can they hear voices in their head if they don't actually know what a voice sounds like? I think just like a blind person won't really understand colors, a deaf person won't understand sounds. Only if they were born that way though.
