Ahem, SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE by Kurt Vonnegut. Read it first then read all of the other Vonnegut works.
Daniel Quinn is really good too, Ishmael, The Story of B, My Ishmael in that order. Really makes you think about how were are going as a race.

If you would be willing, the Inheritance (Eragon) Series. It is fantasy, but it is good. The book is nothing like the movie.
One of the few books I've ever read all the way through and enjoyed every minute of it.
Magician, or anything else by Raymond E Fiest
Beast, by Donna Jo Napoli.
It is beauty in the beast, with all the things behind the scenes. Y'know, the sex, the actual curse, no flying teapots...
A mature Bauty and the Beast.
The Alphabet of Manliness
I Am America (And So Can You!)

You should check out "The Keys to the Kingdom" Series by Garth Nix.

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is not the best good but it's defiantly one of the best ones.

Diary of Anne Frank.
It's really fuckin' cool.
Federation Of Russia
