Terrible idea, especially with the amount of people that use it as their only outlet for socialization, therefore making the other things they listed completely void, because they have nobody else.
People are far too dependent on the internet for this to have any impact at all, and will only lead to having the people that already have friends to have a "funny story" to tell when it's all over. Nothing will have changed, and nobody will become less dependent. They'll all flock back to their precious Facebook to tell everyone how it went, and the addiction will restart from where it was the day before.
Again, the goal isn't to stop people from using the Internet, or make them less dependent on it. It's just for one day. It's to prove that you do have willpower over using it. I see your point, though. However, this cause is like going without food or electricity, for a day. It's to live the life of a different person, sort of. Not using the Internet isn't as daring as those two things, but it's still something.
Btw, how many people in the world use it as their only outlet for socialization? Maybe that's to prove that they can use a change, and interact with people in the real world... or not. Again, it's only a day.
