I'm hearing a lot lately about how horrible religion is, but I don't think it's that bad.
Trey Parker (from of course "South Park") said perhaps the greatest thing about religion ever. He said that he'd heard a lot of truly ridiculous stories about religious belief. Then he heard the notion that there's this big universe and it's expanding and collapsing...just because. To him, that was the most ridiculous story out of all of them. Wouldn't you say he's right? Granted, he's no fundamentalist, but I think this is one of the most thought-provoking things ever said.

The greatest thing about religion is that it can't be summed up in a witty quote.

Not really - the problem being you cannot describe God with math, nor provide any sort of scientific proof, whereas for the non-religious theories there is science behind it all. Science is also a modern study, which can be observed by anyone, and checked by those who have the knowledge to. However religion is greatly based on very old texts and lies invented during the middle ages. (For instance the idea of being baptised was invented in the middle ages, no-one was going to church, and there was a high infant mortality rate, as a results the clerics said if you didn't get your child baptised after their short life is over they will not be able to go to heaven, as a result people baptised their children and more of them went to church. Religion is politics heavy on the media - unlike science which has a backbone.

The idea of something coming from nothing (the space dust must have came from somewhere) is more absurd than something coming from something, that is true.
I don't get the point of this topic though. Is it great sayings about religion? Going purely by the title, the best thing is the music.

One of the most thought-provoking things ever said? Really?
There's at least scientific theories for it.

That's no reason for someone to become religious;
And although i believe that either that a powerful object or being is ultimate, as the "blank" outside of the universe has nothing at ALL, which is very questionable OOOR That there is no explanation, there is no organization, there is no reason for anything, the quote in the start of this useless piece of information about me is that that simple quote doesn't really mean anything:
It's actually much more complex, as the human brain can't be deciphered in a simple quote.

If he had researched a bit he would have found theories on why this happens. And I'd say that that is less bizarre than a god which is everywhere at the same time. Unless this happens on different dimensions (which would support the expand contract theory) this is very hard to believe.

If God were omnipotent, it would HAVE to be on all the dimensions.

Both concepts deal with infinity, both are equally illogical to the human mind.

The Big Bang and God are not mutually exclusive. Most Christians believe in the Big Bang.

No.
Is it ridiculous? Yeah, sorta. Is it the MOST ridiculous? Nahh.
I think this is one of the most thought-provoking things ever said.
That's kinda sad.

I know, and I appreciate that, I'm just saying that OP's claims that atheists want us to accept the Big Bang "just because" are complete bollocks.

all these questions can never be answered... The big bang theory and religion.
lets say god is not real and everything was created by the big bang, what created those two atoms (or whatever)... what made them come together and explode? wouldn't there have to be another big bang to create the things that made the big bang that created us?
and if god is real (notice how i say "if" cause i do not know and i'm not being bias) what created god? what was there before god? and what was there before the universe? and what was there before that?
...
see, these questions just lead to more and more questions... so its useless to try and figure them all out.
but hey what do i know? i'm just a 13 year old catholic kid...=)

One of the theories behind the big bang is that a different universe had begun to contract, as ours eventually will, and as all the matter in that universe came together and the colossal force of this "big crunch," allowed all that matter to burst through the wall between the universes, and at the point where the big crunch happened in that alternate universe, the big bang happened in ours.
But there's a flaw. They don't know where that first universe came from. The best explanation for that so far is that it would simply have to be a universe with no beginning, but I personally believe that everything was encased within the one, which shattered itself in an unimaginable explosion to become the universe, and that is on a religious level. The question raised is about the origin of the one. Nothing is clear cut, no matter what way you look at it. I guess we might never know.
This thread is way too open, i've gone wildly off-topic in this post yet it is still relevant. Discuss.
People shouldn't talk crap about religion seriously you blame awhole Group over those huge Extremists Seriously?

Well, I'm not theologian, but I think that the assumption is that God, being God and all, has no beginning or end. This "God" being has this ability, due to the fact that he is all powerful. I really can't say much beyond that.
Also, I am not certainly not saying that the Big Bang didn't happen. My question is, WHY did the Big Bang happen? The problem is, I'm being explained as to HOW the Big Bang happened. There's a difference between HOW and WHY. I do believe that is how the universe came into being, but why did it come into being?

The greatest thing about religion is that it keeps stupid people in line. Those who have so little common sense that they might do something wrong can be kept from doing so by the threat of eternal damnation.

Agreed.
Science has it's faults.
Religion has it's faults.
Both can be easily explained.
Neither have solid proofy proof against the other.
