What's wrong with turnbased combat? 2008-12-10 19:59:58 Reply

Why has everyone gotten rid of turnbased combat? It seems like every new JRPG coming out seems to be trying to change it or improve it. I don't see what's wrong with the way it is. I liked FFX. I thought they had turnbased down, but appearantly no one else thinks so.

Discuss?

I enjoy it rather much. I guess people like games that don't require thinking.

Turn-based combat isn't what sucks, it's that you'll be walking along and BAM!

BATTLE SCREEN AND REPETITIVE FIGHT MUSIC.

YOU BEAT THE EXTREMELY COMMON ENEMY. SCORE SCREEN WITH EXP. REPEAT BY STEPPING ANOTHER INCH.

Chrono Trigger had the only turn-based combat that I actually liked. You couldn't run from the enemies, but everything THEY did happened in real time while you still had to wait for your bar to fill up and select what to do.

Reviews and such. They keep saying "Oh! They're really bringing turnbased combat into next gen!" and shit like that.

I find most turn based fighting boring repetitive and unfun. Though some games like Pokemon and super paper mario seem to captivate me more.

I was accustomed to turnbased combat as a kid thanks to the FF series. RPG's were mostly what I played anyway and it seems back in the day they were all turn based. After getting into First Person shooters and the like it just seems so slow. I do like turnbased combat and I don't turn it down, but I would rather have real-time action.

FF was just...(As someone said eariler) BAM! REPETITIVE MUSIC AND A COMMON ENEMY!

It's always TOO repetitive.

I'm going to get ripped by FF fanboys now.

Yes you are. FF IS semi ok combat but its the awesome storyline that makes it great. The Fighting style can suck as long as you get a good story out of it.

I agree. I wouldn't try and bother playing a game with terrible gameplay and pure repetitiveness just for the story.

I would also agree Jawdyn. FF IX was my favourite of the FF series and that one wasn't all that story-driven. Hell, for the first disc or two it was just about going to place X and beating some enemies and bosses along the way. It only got interesting during the third disc but the game itself is fantastic.

Pokemon would be another example of gameplay over story. The story in that game is just you trying to be the very best that no one ever was.

But story is still a great addition in ANY game.

I JUST WANTED TO SAY I NOTICED BOOBS OUT OF ALL THIS LOL...

For Those Of You Who Hate The "RANDOM BATTLE SYSTEM" as its called
for SNES its called the game genie, get the "Moogle Bangle" prevents ALL random Battles
FFX HAD A RECIPE FOR THE ARMOR OR A WEAPON THAT PREVENTED THIS AS WELL, 7 had a materia that did this (I THINK NOT SHOOR)

I For One Prefer it over real time, That way im not gettimg owned by a computer that thinks 100x faster than me :) but i think most peoples problem with turns is: like when you have a mini-gun and cant kill everything in the room, throws em off. Final Fantasy is my Favorit Game gener Aside from earth worm gim lol

It really depends. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I like when you have to dp something in order to inflict more/take less damage and things like Paper Mario, or the other Mario RPGs. Mother 3 was cool, too, with the music combo system, where you had to press the button in beat to the music and mostly every enemy had it's own music.

Star Ocean had an excellent combat system. For shizzle.

Sure you can strip a random battle system down to the very skeleton of what it is, but you can do that for any game.

Shooters - It's just shotshotshot and kill way too many people for one guy, they're always too repetitive
Platformers - they're always jumpjumpjump and maybe occasionally you have to jump on some guy or punch them it's SO REPETITIVE
etcetc

The gaming industry is changing every year and needs to adapt to the consumers needs. Turn-Based games are starting to die out because of this.

Turnbased combat is slow paced and corny.
"Tidus attacks for 11 damage"
*Go and have lunch*
"The enemy has still done nothing until Yuna attacks, cool"

I believe that people don't like the turn based combat system cause they think of it as "you hit me now it is my turn to hit you". This sort of thing get really repetitive and really makes rpg dull. If you made rpg combat more interactive, say move your characters around, giving them abilities while they wait for an attack say a block button which can be based on stats, and combat abilities based off of the movements of your character, say you must be mid air to use an attack. That would make combat interesting in my book.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. I like how it it is slow-paced. It givs me time to think ahead of time and develop some sort of strategy to fight a monster, or a boss. As for it being corny, i don't get it. What does that suppose to mean?

But those kinda games are always fun, and you don't do the same thing...On the odd occasions you'll be doing something different.

(Example: Call of Duty 3: There's an objective where you gotta help the tank locate some enemies, There's also one where you Drive around, a couple where you bomb stuff)

So I win the battle.

Actually your not shooting. Also it's actually FUN, which is the whole point of a game.

Turn-based Combat is just plain dull and boring.

Actually I can think really well, just I don't like Turn-Based...I'm alright with RTS, because it's more action-paced and not just Hit, get hit, hit, get hit, hit, get hit.

So yeah, Real Time games (Including RTS's) are awesome.

in final fantasy 3 for super nintento, saban had the "BLITS" command that you had to input "street fighter like movements" to do different actions.

My abc's To A Better Turn-Based RPG/
A:multi-player

B:don't slack on graphics because its multi-player

C:add a SHIT LOAD OF EYE CANNDY

D:Everyone likes hot chicks :)

E:Hardcore nudity lol

F:A decent dioloug for a bonus +10 to kewlness (all your base are belong to us)
that shit cant happen, instantly LAME! funny, but lame.

I:don't ask us what our name and birth date is if we get into the game and our char's name is Leon and is 24 years old *crys*

J:some like guns, others like swords, some like telling big monstrositys to kill everything for them, others like raining molten balls of flaming plasma death down on there enemys, so just to be on the safe side put it all in there!!!

K:Don't make the main charicter male or female, let us choos

L:Don't make the storyline go one way or the other, (your a male so you have to save the king, your a girl, so you have to find the kitty cat) leave it up to the actions that the players Take.

M:there is a time and place for everything, i can apreceate comedy in a game, but not when its a fight to save the world, i want to be sweating bullets in fear my home planet will be destroyed if i fail,

N:you know what else makes for a fun game? BEING ABLE TO "SEE" WHAT IS SHOOTING AT YOU!
seriously, the random battles are kind of old, after 13 generations of FF im kinda tired of a 30Ft tall IRON GIANT sneeking up on me rofl (HOW THE HELL DIDN'T YOU SEE THAT?)

O:Replay Value! Replay Value! Replay Value!
I Payed 49.99 for this, if its only fun the first time you beat it, sure way to piss some gamers off.

P:If it Is a love story, atleast let me choos the babe/Dude my charicter Falls in love with huh!!!
