3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsWhy hasn't there been any games that are more than a disc long any more? on the ps1 we had to purchase games with at most 4 discs, even metal gear solid was 2 discs.
I know people will argue that it was because the games were too long for one disc because of the limitations of the system. That is my point exactly, developers were so interested in making a game they were over-acheiving and pushing the system beyond the capacity of a single disc.
Are game developers so lazy and content with making a "Graphically Superior" game and lack lustre story?
FFXII - is a prime example, the story was epic "very similar to Star wars, I know people have said it before but there is a lot of striking similarities." still it was confined to a single disc.
I have yet to hear of a next gen console releasing a game that was so large and expansive that it needed more than one disc. are developers content now? I would like to see a new game that pushes the boundries of a system, we had loads of games for the MD and SNES that pushed the systems and even the PS1 was pushed, N64 got pushed near the end of its cycles.
The PS2 Xbox GC never had games that pushed the limits of the system, it was always graphics this and graphics that. I want to see a New multi disc console game that pushes the capabilities of our next-gen consoles.
anyone agree? or is is everyone happy with single disc games, beleiving that the reason they have a single disc is because they ahve more memory on discs now? I know that, it shouldn't stop the developers pushing boundries.
Blu Ray has 50x the capacity so...
I don't think we'll see that space getting filled soon.
There have been a few games that have been multi-disc.
Lost Odyssey, The Last Remnant, and Star Ocean 4 will be 3 discs. With heavy compressing you can make games fit on the standard DVD. Those were all for the Xbox 360.
Blu-Ray can hold up to 50 gig on a dual layer disc so you can fit a lot of story on there without even compressing. The bigger the game size is does not mean it is a better game necessarily.
FUCK MULTIPLE DISKS! i rented mgs, got half way through (without saving once since i was playing on a ps2 without a ps1 memory card) and came to the "insert Disc 2" part and was like WTF.
i'm not going through it again.

You wont see any multi-disk PS3 Games since Blu-Ray discs can potentially hold over 100 gig, I can imagine FF13 is gonna be multi-disk on Xbox 360
I don't mind switching cds
most of the people who whine about it are just probably fat or too lazy

I know the Gamecube had a few games that used 2 discs. Like the Resident Evil series, and Tales of Symphonia are a few I could think of.
.
I can understand what you are saying but then againd when we do get those games their are going to be so many people who cant delay gratification that nobody will buy it. I mean even I got throughh most of FF7 and was like "for the love of christ just end already"
BOOYAH
take that liberals
I think it may just be that the technology is outpacing the developers.
A lot more can be crammed onto a disk than even a year ago.
There's still a lot of multidisk PC games, too.
the game your talkin bout being multiple disks and being so large i hope if it comes out on the ps3 u dont have to install it cuase that would take 4eva and take up a HUGE ASS LOAD of space
Way back when, I could put up wit 2 or 3 discs that needed to be swapped. But digging through 4 or 5? Forget it. Now, though, compression and disc space are so much better we aren't going to be seeing multiple disc games on such a scale again anytime soon I reckon.

K, I just bet that god of war 3 will be one disk.

If you lose/break 1 disc, then you're gonna have to buy a new full X-Disc game...

Each single layer disc holds 25 gigs. Double layer 50 gig. It is possible for Blu-Ray to potentially go up to 400 gigs but that isn't used by the Playstation or any blu-ray players. PS3 games go up to 50 gigs.

I've heard some rumors that said that Sony requires that anyone who develops for the system to uncompress certain elements to make the game fill the whole disk.

That rumor is actually true.
It has something to do with filling at least 75% of the disk.

They encourage them to do this so it makes it look more like people have to go to Blu-ray for the future of gaming. When in reality you could compress a lot of that and what not.
I have to be honest here, when I played MGS4, I actually fell for the "time to switch discs" part.
But yeah, you try making a Blu-Ray game that spans two discs. Oh, wait, you can't. It'd have to be either a large compilation of games, or a really big one. I mean, The Orange Box took up one disc, and it has Half Life 2, both episodes of HF2, Portal, and TF2.
Godly sig made by Xports. Praise to him.
It would take pretty much every game company working together to take up two PS3 Blue-Ray discs, if you want the game out soon. It just needs that much content. I'm still amazed at the scope of Fallout 3, and it has only one disc.
My PSN ID is xscoot. Crazy, huh?
I don't know why you're complaining about there not being 2-disc games. Don't have to get off the couch and change discs mid-game :p. The main reason's probably because the discs have more space now, not that developers are shortening games.
personally, i don't mind changing disks, but it can be annoying when all but 1 works or 1 is lost. ;)
It's hard to make a game that is very long to take up the entire disk, because then you might get reviews saying gameplay is repetitive.
Um..Dude?
Disks can store more space now.
Thats why we dont have PC games that come on 6 disks anymore.

Seriously. This is a good thing. Why would you want 2 disks? Metal Gear Solid 4, pushed the limit pretty hard. For ever scene there was a 2 minute load time. I'm pretty sure developers are still pushing the limits, you don't need to fill up a whole blu ray disk to prove that.
The cake is a lie.

Good job on letting your argument fall apart on you. That is why I will not be switching the DVD-RW drive on my computer to a BD-RW drive any time soon.
Last time I checked, the Blu Ray drives are slower than standard DVD drives.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind having multiple disc games, but you have to understand that developers are trying to save money by storing the game on one disc so that they don't have to worry about spending on extra discs that they don't necessarily need.
Sure, I'd love to have multiple disc games like you said, but if a developer was forced to use more than one disc, he'd rather sell the first disc and offer the second as an expansion pack.
It might not be the case that they don't have multiple disc games, and I'd make a complete idiot out of myself, but I believe that's why we don't see any more MDGs these days.
