A slur is a slur. calling a black person a N*gger is the same as calling a white person a cracker or a honkey. or calling an Asian a slant, or an Italian a wop. Its a directed insult at the other person's race and it is wrong. Saying "oh the history of it..." is a bullshit excuse to set a double standard to hold one party down while the other party is free to spew their hateful remarks.

If a black person can call me a Cracker or a honkey, then I can turn around and call him a N*gger or a cotton picker. If an Italian can call me a pot licker (I'm 75% irish) then I can call him a Wop, or a Goombah.

setting double standards in favor of one side only incites more hate for the other person. Either everyone can call everyone names using racial sluts openly, or no one should be allowed to utter such remarks.

I disagree. While I do agree that all racial slurs are hateful and I wouldn't be caught dead saying any of them, the fact is is that some of more offensive than others.

The n-word was historically used to verbally "show" that blacks are inferior. My grandmother spoke before the House of Representatives on Welfare Rights, but she was dismissed because she was an n-word. Barack Obama will be the President of the United States, but he is still dismissed as just another n-word to some.

However, with the example of a word like "cracker", there are few instances of it being used to show whites as inferior. Most of the time, it's used as a joke. In other, serious instances, it still rarely is used to call whites inferior.

Of course, under my logic, if a white man is reading a passage from a book like "To Kill a Mockingbird", and he comes across the n-word, it wouldn't and shouldn't be offensive since he won't say it as a term to call blacks inferior, but rather just because it's in the book.

To sum it all up, it all depends on the intended usage. Historically and in modern times, the n-word has been meant to do more harm than good and words like honky and cracker have been meant only as jokes.

yeah i bet you do. a slur is a slur, and a slur is aimed towards a person's race. to file them into categories and say, "this one is ok, this one should be banned, this one is kinda iffy" is pointless. A Situation i thought was really funny:
i was in 9th grade, English i beleive.
sombody called me a cracker and i didnt know what it meant, i dont watch TV or listen to the radio much as all i ever see or hear is Bad news.
so i asked, "is that sapose to be like an insult or something, i mean come on, cracker? and the "black guy who sat next to me informed me of what it meant. in which case i replyed (Aloud) "im not white im

It doesn't matter what race you are there will be some form of discrimination because if we all cooperated and had the philosophy of live and let live, how many jobs in psychiatry, Law and human resources would be lost.
It is easier to prepare people for racial tension than it is to properly educate children.
If it isn't race - then its social class - tax bracket politics religion, and most of it focus on fear.
It's about Money, Power and the fear it generates.

I believe the police and courts are sometimes racist. The justice system shouldn't be biased, that's why Mr. Gonzales is in his awkward position. The problem I have is the oversweeping statement that the police are racist. Some police are racist. Possibly many, but not all are.
