Hold your dumbbell while you do sit ups. That should work to harden your stomach. But you need to run to get rid of fat. If your stomach goes out past your chest you need to run a lot more. Good luck.

You won't get good results with just dumbbells and a bench press. You need to do exercises and weights that focus more on the abdomen and stomach.

If you're fat: step 1 - Lose your fatness. All of it. Aerobic exercises ftw! step 2 - Weight lift, billions of stomach crunches, situps with weights, etc.
If you're skinny, just step 2

If you're skinny you need to gain fatness. Eat lots of meat, and dairy products, then weight train. How can you build muscle if you have no fat to burn.

This is what I do, and it works for me. Maybe go running from time to time to help lose weight if you're overweight; if you average or below average weight, then eat a lot of protein and do the above.
