We can vote for our president, we can legally drive with a license, we are considered adults, and yet, 18 year olds cant legally drink or consume alcohol.......till the age of 21 in the US.....

Just saying that out loud, it sounds really ridiculous.....We can become soldiers but not drink?!

HAHA, wow, gotta love america....

If I could name one person I respect.........it probably would be me. oh and the guy who lives here

It's always about getting drunk with you americans why can't you find something else to do , how does getting drunk help you and do you honestly believe a person at the age of 35 who doesn't know that there are other countries on the world exept America needs to be drunk at the age of 18!!! Heck, they should rise the age limit to 30 in America !

Over here in England, everyone complains about the drinking age being 18, not 16. I think the government have been talking about raising it to 21 now though. It's not ever going to stop people drinking underage though, just inconvenience them.

Whatever the legal age is, people will always drink below anyway.

I'm 16 and I drink wine from time to time.

I've drank beer, and wiskey, and good ol' Romanian Palinka.

Thing is I don't really care.

I used to live on a grape farm in Romania (so wine galore). Drinking is not that big a deal for me.

What's so great about it anyway?

By the way American beer tastes like urine and it's as strong as tea.

They are talking about putting it 21 after they put smoking from 16 to 18

Most pubs make sure your 21 already, even if your 18, they dont let you in, gotta prove your 21

They're talking about changing that, seeing as you're able to join the army yet you can't drink.

Well I can get married but I can't drink at my own wedding. How ridiculous is that? I can actually go out into the world, start up a family, get a job and drive about, but I still can't drink. The SNP are wanting to raise the legal age for buying drink to 21 from everywhere except pubs and clubs which is probably more ridiculous than just raising the drinking age.

"Yes, I'll take a lottery ticket and a pack of L&B's."
"Is that all, sir?"
"Actually, I'll have a small bottle of whisky as well for a wee dram tonight."
"Can I see some ID?"
"Yes, here it is."
"I'm sorry, I can let you gamble your money away and I can let you slowly poison yourself with cigarettes, but I'm not allowed to sell you this cheaply priced bottle of whisky even though you are allowed to legally drink because people your age are troublesome and are a bunch of alcoholics and us small businesses and supermarkets are making things to cheap for you skint youngsters."

This looks squint.

Of course it's not rational and not fair.

However, even if some politician had the power to do something about it I'm guessing that they would be deterred by the fact that they would be known for the rest of their lives and, more importantly, careers as the guy/girl who made it easier for our youth to get alcohol (or tried).

It's just some early law that wasn't thought out right or that was made as an attempt to prohibition (or whatever) that is pretty much impossible to change because politicians don't care enough to sacrifice their public image (and I think that it would be totally unfair if we expected that they did).

lots of 18 y/o topics lately huh...

I'm British but you're taking stuff for granted here. I mean, we don't face this problem here but still, alchohol isn't that hard to find. At least you can vote, fight without being labelled as violent militia and live free. With barely any terror. Just try to relax a bit bro. I mean, i wuite like punk music but the anarchy message is gay.

because you voted for a drunk president who can't drive. In Canada the age is 19 so we only have one year between being able to legally kill people to legally being able to drink with them

The reason the liquor age is set at 21 is because medical research determined that the human liver does not reach full "maturity" until around that age. Underage drinkers are at more risk to cause long term damage which can hinder their liver's ability to synthesize amino acids and produce triglycerides. The immature human liver lacks the properly developed hepatocytes necessary for the function of detoxification of certain substances as well. The lawmakers didn't just throw a dart at a board and hit 21. Our friends across the pond seem to either disagree with our medical findings or just don't care.

In any case, since alcohol is a drug, and a legal one at that, it needs to be used responsibly and many people just don't think teenagers are mature enough to handle it. But the same can be equally true that some 21 year olds are not mature enough to drink, so asdfasdfadsdafsd

Younger people need to learn that it is a privilege, just like voting, driving or owning a firearm. But if the age was lowered, it would take the thrill out of underage drinking.
