3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsWell, I just got a nice surprise this morning. Apparently it's been common knowledge around these parts for a while now, but I just saw a poster this morning. Basically, this poster informed me that I can collect £15 for doing absolutely nothing.
To cut a fairly long story short, the internet service in the university accommodation has been horrendous this year, so everyone living on campus is getting a £15 refund.
I'm quite pleased with this. I could buy a few pints with this money, put it toward a new game, the possibilities are endless. Hopefully my stepdad, who kindly paid me through this year, won't want it for himself, but I can't really object if he does. I should be giving him a hell of a lot more than £15.
Anyway, this seems the most relevant place to share this information, it also provides an opportunity to bump this club.

Heh, that's pretty cool. The internet quality on my campus depends on where you live. Right now where I live, I get like 20 ping to NYC, which is great for playing Quake Live.
My dorm last year was terrible. Couldn't play anything online. I guess it's kind of good and bad though. I have something to occupy my time with good internet, but maybe it occupies a bit too much time.
Also, me not getting drunk tonight = sad :(

You know your a student when you say this on a week day. Haha.
I also sat down and worked for 6 hours straight last night, in order to finish of some coursework due in for Friday. I'd have left it until later if I didn't also have a test I need to revise for on Friday.
Once this week is over, I really only have one week left then that's me got about a months holiday, then back to sit 3 exams and then I'm finished until September. Student life is awesome.

I feel your pain man. I've got a massive Java assignment due next week, so that means no getting smashed on the town tomorrow night :(
I can't believe I forgot about this place and I was the one that created it. :P
This summer I had two online classes. I got an A in my Philosophy class and even though by the 8th week I was ready for it to be over I still feel that I enjoyed the class all around. I also had a History class that I got a B in, but I hated it with a passion. I actually would have gotten a C- if it wasn't for the curve that he gave everyone in the class.
Next Monday I start classes again. I don't know if I'm excited or what. It's my last year, but a big part of me is just sick of school now.
I'm back to university on the 13th of September, so I only have 3 weeks before I go back. I'm looking forward to getting back, because I'll get to see all my university friends again and I will actually have something productive to do during the day again. I'll probably end up missing all the free time I've had over the summer. Since I never got around to finding a job, it's pretty much been a summer of doing what I want, when I want.
My grades from my first year of university came through a while ago and I did rather well. I got a separate letter to tell me I'm getting a certificate of merit, which are given to those with an average grade of A. I was rather pleased with this.
Once uni starts up again, I'm going to be commuting from home, and I've found a university bus that I can use to travel which doesn't require me to pay for its service, so that was lucky. The only downside is that it leaves at about 8AM and doesn't return until 5PM, so I'll have a lot of sitting about this year.

I'm off to University, starting 13th September and I can't wait! I'm pretty accommodated in the heart of the community in the City Halls Campus and can't wait to meet loads of people there. Doing a Computer Games Design Course at the University of Wolverhampton. So I should be updating this thread every so often as it's my first year.
I need to look for a part time job in Wolverhampton so I can actually have some disposable income down there.
I'm back October 11th.
Hope my flat is ready by then. It's being damp proofed before I start renting it.

Yeah, there are a few people that I'd like to hang out with, but I guess the thing that bothers me is the block and student teaching schedule that I'm going to be going into. This leaves no time for me to really have a social life except for once a week and I'm guessing that's why I'm not too excited to go back at the time.
I'm sure once I get back into things it'll be alright though.

Great job on the grades.

How do you make friends? You don't. :) How I make friends is a different story though.

I won't be able to work during my schedule so I'm hoping that all the money that I made this summer lasts for a little while. I actually have to keep a budget... Hello real world.

I already moved almost all of my stuff in. It's just actually setting it up the way I want it now.
looking forward to next week.. ill be starting my second year or college which will also be my final year (uk college). However for the first time ever there will be four girls in my course. (my course is games development) its gonna be weird..and exciting at the same time
cherry garcia: its like having an angel cum in your mouth
A couple days back I did the online enrolment for my course. It was quite a lengthy procedure, especially since I like to read over everything I type a million times with something like that. I should now be officially registered for my second year of university. The only thing I'm waiting on now is some kind of confirmation about the payment of my tuition fees. Being Scottish, our government pay them for me, so I had to scan a copy of the Awards Notice and email it to the university finance office. I'm not sure if I get a confirmation reply or not, but I always fear that the fees are going to be dropped on me at some point.
I also secured a seat on a free bus until December 3rd. It's quite convenient really, because the university I study at has a campus in my home town, but the one I attend is just outside Edinburgh, so they have a bus that travels between the two campuses. It leaves at about 7:30am and returns at 5:05 meaning I have a lot of lingering about to do and I've been hoping I don't have a class that finishes after 5:05. Might be a little impractical, but it should save me a decent amount of bus fees.
Making it through university with no student loan is look achievable!

I'm trying to decide if I want to come home each weekend to work. On one side of the picture I have a very busy week and going home to work on the weekend would limit my social life to very little, but on top of that I have to worry about paying the bills and I need to start saving up for a wedding.
By the time I worked two days on the weekend I would make about a $30 to $40 dollar profit, but that would be an extra $120 to $160 a month that would pay the electric and TV/Internet bill quite easily. To me it's almost worth it, but like I said I'm still deciding.
Also, if I keep the job on the weekends like this then I'll be able to skip the rehiring process that I would have to go through if I were to come back on the holidays.
Well, I start College in september and since I failed most of my GCSEs I'll be starting off on a lower course for ICT.
I already have my College id and shit, I just need to fill out a bunch more paperwork to get EMA and so on.
At 8/27/10 09:37 AM, Fro wrote: I'm trying to decide if I want to come home each weekend to work.
I'm in a similar situation, although I don't have to come home at the weekend, since I still live at my parents house. I want a weekend job, because I need the money to live, but then it really limits my free time. As it is, I won't be getting home until after 6pm on weekdays, and I'll be aiming to be asleep by midnight to get a decent amount of sleep for the next day.
A weekend job would literally leave me with very little time to enjoy myself. I'm hoping the money I currently have will get my by until Christmas, then I should get some more money around the holiday time, and I have my birthday about 3 weeks after. I'm hoping that should bring in enough cash to get me by until the end of the next academic yea.

Money wise, I'm just living off my loan and some cash I've got saved up.
Through pure luck I've ended up letting from a landlord who will only charge me while I'm actually there, so I'm only paying for the 9 months I'm at uni, while all of my friends have gone through letting agencies actually aimed at students, which force 12 month lets onto you, so you're paying over the summer holidays when you're not even there.
I definitely couldn't work as well as study, though. I was pushed to get all of my work done last year. In the second term I was going to lectures in the day, and then working on lab reports or programming assignments or problem questions or some other shit almost every night. Died down a little in the third term, but then I had to start getting revision in for exams, and ended up with no free time once again.
My new timetable has finally been posted online, and it's looking pretty sweet. For one thing, I get Tuesdays off until Christmas. I also have no classes starting or ending after 5pm, which means that I'm able to use a free bus service all of the first semester. I also don't have any classes that start late in the afternoon, meaning that when my bus arrives at 9am I'll only have a couple of hours sitting around until the first class, at most.
I'm quite looking forward to going back now.

cool a college club, just started this year so i'm gettin the hang of shit. i guess i should run through the list
Community college
commuting
no dorm or appartment (my highschool fucked me outta dorms)
broadcast major (radio centric)
Well, I had my first day back at university yesterday and it was a long day indeed, but I better get used to it, because they wont be getting any shorter.
I basically woke up at 6am and had to get ready for a 7:30am bus. It's the free bus that travels between the campuses that I've spoke of in the past. It's actually a really handy thing and I'm glad I found out about it. This will save me a fortune in bus fares or petrol money.
Once I got there I had a little hanging about to do before my first lecture, but it was a little better once everyone else arrived. It was good to see all my class mates again. Most of the lectures were just introductions to the modules and we briefly got started on the work.
One thing I've really started to notice is the cost of lunch this year. Last year, I was catered, so just had to hand over my card. No actual money changed hands when getting food, but now I have to pay properly and you really start to notice the costs. 60-70 pence for a packet of crisps? I mean what the hell.
It just doesn't feel the same this year, not living on campus. Now I can't just go back to my room between classes and hang out. It doesn't really feel as social any more either, and I don't see as much of my friends who are in other courses.
I'm sort of glad to be back because at least now I have something productive to do with my time, although I do miss the late nights and generally sitting around at home doing nothing of significance.

Catered in Birmingham was such a gyp, can't believe anyone would take it. Your card was loaded with £35 or so every week, if you didn't spend all of it you lost what was left at the end of the week. And people like me in the selfcatered could just go and buy the same food for the same price anyway, there was literally no benefit to going catered. It just meant I got to go and get a free meal off my friends at the end of every week if they hadn't spent it all.

It was pretty much the same with us, only I had no other choice of accommodation by the time I applied. Although, we had an entire semesters worth of money on the card, and what wasn't spent was lost. This meant that at the end of the semesters, I'd be buying crates of Coke and boxes of sweets so I never wasted the remaining cash.
It's not exactly a good system at all, to be honest.

I get a half day on wednesday, then I get thursday and friday off.
Guess I can officially post in here now that I'm in college :P I must say, it's incredible! I'm majoring in Computer Programmer and I love it!! I'm in the library/comms hanging out on NG till my classes start. This semester, I'm taking:
- EAC150 (English)
- APC100 (Communications)
- IPC144 (C Programming)
- IOS110 (Operating Systems/Windows Server 2008)
- ULI101 (UNIX/Linux and The Internet)
- IAC002 (Computer Applications)
For obvious reasons, my favorite classes is the C and UNIX/Linux classes and they are AWESOME!!! :P
Schedule:
Monday: EAC150 (8 - 9:45), APC100 (10:45 - 11:35), IPC144 (11:40 - 2:20)
Tuesday: ICA002 (2:25 - 3:15), IOS110 (3:20 - 5:05)
Wednesday: APC100 (9:50 - 11:35), ULI101 (11:40 - 1:25)
Thursday: EAC150 (9:50 - 10:40), IPC144 (1:30 - 3:15)
Friday: ULI101 (8 - 10:40), IOS110 (11:40 - 2:20)
So yeah. I love college!!! :P
I've decided to work every other weekend back at home. My electric bill is somewhere between 20 to 30 dollars a month and my TV/Internet bill is 80 dollars a month. I work like 11 hours a weekend so every other week is just enough for me to not deplete my existing bank account.
I'm going to make and share my schedule with you guys. I'm just swamped with so much work right now.

Nice man. I gotta say, college is where it's at!! xD

Starts at 8? Ouch, that's pretty vicious. My timetable is
Monday: nothing
Tuesday: 12-1, non-compulsory labs from 2-5
Wednesday: 10-11
Thursday: 10-11, 12-1, non-comp labs 2-5
Friday: 10-11
The 10-11s are on Operating Systems, and the 12-1 is intelligent robotics (and so are the lab hours)
Yeah that's pretty awesome. but then I've got my final year project to be working on too so that'll eat up my free time.
My initial timetable, changes later on in the term:
Monday:
10:15-11:15 - Maths IV
17:15-18:15 - Lagrangian Mechanics
Tuesday:
10:15-17:15 - Experimental Lab VI
Wednesday:
9:15-10:15 - Numerical Methods
11:15-12:15 - Particle Physics
12:15-13:15 - Numerical Methods (only for first two weeks of term)
Thursday:
10:15-11:15 - High Energy Observational Astrophysics
Friday:
10:15-11:15 - Lagrangian Mechanics
11:15-12:15 - Maths IV
12:15-13:15 - Lagrangian Mechanics
13:15-14:15 - High Energy Observational Astrophysics
14:15-15:15 - Particle Physics
16:15-17:15 - Maths IV problem class
Seriously man, fuck Friday. 5 hours on, then an hour break, then back for another hour!
Although, I skipped most of my Maths lecture last term, because the lecture literally just read through the notes, which he put onto the intranet anyway.
But yeah, not a nice timetable. I have a bunch of one-off lectures, too. Looks like at least one per week. At least there's only the one 9:15 start, and Monday and Thursday aren't that bad.
Before you read the classes I'm taking you should know that they are all education classes. I'm not necessarily learning math or science, but instead how to teach math and science.

I go back on the 11th. I don't know if I can last 2 weeks without internet!

It's not just I need the internet to not go insane and starting chewing the walls, I get timetable updates all the time, emailed out the night before, or even in the morning. When I say all the time, I mean like once a week. Can't afford to be missing lectures.
Wish I'd been able to get this sorted sooner, but I didn't get the keys until the 2nd, and this was the earliest they could do it.
