Impressions after freshers week and one week of lectures:

All but astrophysics lectures are boring. All revision from A-level. Hopefully they'll get better when we get into new stuff.

Astrophysics teacher is amazing. Uses the Galaxy Song from Monty Python to help memorise figures you need to remember.

A 40 minute walk feels a lot longer when carrying a bag of potatoes.

My room smells of stagnant water since the drain in the shower is hopeless.

I've been here a fortnight and know the name of only one of my 7 flatmates, and I don't think I've even seen 3 of them.

Well, second semester of my first year starts on Monday. I'm rather looking forward to it. I'll be back on campus five days a week and I'll get to see all my uni mates again. I'm looking forward to the new change of timetable as well. I have no classes before 12, so that means no early mornings for me this semester.

This semesters modules are Introduction To Database Systems, Introduction To Computer Systems, Software Development 2 and Discreet Maths. It will be interesting getting to know some different members of staff as well as being lectured by some familiar faces.

Another nice welcome back present that I'm quite excited about is the tripled internet speed that has been put into our rooms. At least this was what we were told before the Christmas break, so I hope this has actually been implemented. Getting speeds of 89Kbs was just horrid, so the increase will be well taken.

I also turn 18 next Sunday (17th of January) and this means I'm able to buy alcohol, something that I've never been able to do on campus. I think I'll be frequenting the Student Union more often, although this will result in me having to spend more money then I normally do during the week.

So, I've said what I came here to say. Just a quick update on what's going on with me. Hopefully some more people will start posting in this thread again. I never even noticed that it's gone unposted in for 2-3 months.

So far, I've only really experienced Community College life. And there's not really any difference between it and High School except the price for going to school. Im 21 and am going to graduate soon, maybe going to ASU. And from what I've seen of the culture, people, and faculty, I really like it.

And the dorms. I want a dorm for just ONE semester. Because I don't want to pay off three more years for the rest of my life. Just to experience it.. but by the time I get there.. I might be 23. Would I be out of place you guys think? Haha

Well, I'm back at York. Mock exams on Wednesday and Friday. Will utterly fail them, done no work, but whatever, they're just mocks.

Ha, we're all on break and the club seems to die out and when we all get back the club seems to come back again. Yeah, I go back sometime this upcoming weekend, but I don't have class until Tuesday because of Martin Luther King Day.

I made the Dean's list this last semester, but I'm just going for the good old fashion 3.0 after this. All the extra studying and whatnot took a lot out of me.

Got my timetable for this term sorted now.

12:15-17:30 - Experimental Lab III/IV

Tuesday:
12:15-13:15 - Special Relativity I (only for final 4 weeks)
13:15-14:15 - Stars and Planets
17:15-18:15 - Electromagnetism I

Wednesday:
11:15-12:15 - Optics

Thursday:
9:15-10:15 - Vibrations and Waves (only first 5 weeks)
11:15-12:15 - Maths Practical
13:15-14:15 - Tutorial

Friday:
11:15-12:15 - Vibrations and Waves (first 4 weeks) / Special Relativity I (final 5 weeks)
14:15-15:15 - Electromagnetism I
15:15-16:15 - Stars and Planets
16:15-17:15 - Professional Skills I: Introduction to Maple Programming

Much later starts than last term, but much later finishes too. Honestly, I'd rather start at 9:15 and finish at 15:15 every day.

And here is mine.

As you will see in my schedule below I won't have any time to do work on Mondays. Wednesdays aren't much better as I only have one less class. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are great as I have a lot of free time. I'm assuming these are the times that I'm going to get jobs with the disabilities office again where I'm in the office and taking notes for those with disabilities.

I have an early class each day, which is a bummer, but it will be very nice on the days that I only have once class because I'll have the rest of the day to myself depending on when I'm scheduled to work. I also have a very long and late class on Mondays, which I'm not too excited for, but it's a class that's only scheduled in that manner.

So whenever I get my work schedule and figure out my workout schedule around it I'll add it to this.

Monday

Assessment in the Elementary Classroom - 9:05 - 9:55
Intermediate Level Reading - 11:00 - 12:15
Chemistry in the Environment (Lab) - 1:25 - 3:15
Classroom Management - 3:35 - 4:50
Art Elementary Self-Contained Classroom - 5:30 - 8:20

Tuesday

Chemistry in the Environment - 9:00 - 9:50

Wednesday

Assessment in the Elementary Classroom - 9:05 - 9:55
Intermediate Level Reading - 11:00 - 12:15
Classroom Management - 3:35 - 4:50
Art Elementary Self-Contained Classroom - 5:30 - 8:20

Thursday

Chemistry in the Environment - 9:00 - 9:50

Friday

Assessment in the Elementary Classroom - 9:05 - 9:55

Ugh, that's rough. Isn't pressure from parents the worst? Luckily my parents are happy with A's and B's, but even so, I just hate talking grades with them. I usually just conceal my grades until the final ones are out, it usually works out better that way :]

So I just got done with my first class this semester, which also happens to be the only class that I have today. It was my Chem class and even though I haven't ever had Chem before I know I'm going to enjoy it.

I also like the fact that all of the quizzes are online, no time limits, and you can take them as many times as you want to get the highest grade that you want on them. :P

How is everyone else doing so far?

My father was always like that and I'm happy he was. I even remember getting all A's and an A- once in high school, which still wasn't good enough because it wasn't perfect. Also, the time when I won a track event (the only one he ever went to) and he asked me if I couldn't have tried harder and ran faster.

Been back for a little more than a week now. Interesting classes include more of game study and computer programming. Been also playing TF2 off of a school computer through what was already given. Har.

So yeah, also back in gear here.

I've got just shy of a 3.0 GPA and it's rising, and by the time I graduate I'll have 4 AP courses under my belt: AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP U.S. government, and AP Economics. Maybe AP English 12 as well. I've also got English Honors 10 and 11 behind me, and I'm in Forensics. By the time I graduate I could easily have by Degree of Distinction. I've taken the PSAT twice, and have gotten a 164/240, and a 157/240.
Do I have a good shot at any grants and scholarships?

They give grants and scholarships out to everyone. Just check out the endless amount of ones online. I know there are even scholarships out there for not smoking and other simple things like that.

Man, I was only going to get 6 hours of work a week this semester so I decided to try this thing where I record myself reading a book so someone with a disability that prevents them from being able to read can have access to a school book to study. It's actually a lot more work than I expected it to be, but on top of that it's more hours than I thought.

So my hours went from 12 hours a paycheck to 22 hours a paycheck. (give or take how long the chapters are) This is about 150 dollars a paycheck after they take taxes out, about 10 more then I was getting last semester.

The cool thing about it though is that I have the class that I'm reading the book for, which means while I'm reading for work I'm also doing the reading that I would be doing for myself. Except for the hours put into double checking and editing it, I'm really not doing that much extra work.

I might be a few days late in posting this, seeing as I got my results on Tuesday, but I got the results for my first semesters exams.

Software Development - A
Emerging Technology - A
Praxis - A
Interactive Systems - B (1.5% off an A)

I'm actually quite pleased with myself, although being just a little short of hitting straight A's is rather annoying. I earned 60 credits, although I'm not 100% sure how this systems works. I believe I was told that getting 120 credits a year will result in getting the best band of degree. So, if I get another 60 credits this semester then I'm on target.

Anyone else receive any results recently?

Well, well, well. It's our third semester last week and it was a killer. Too many assignments in Solid Mensuration. In our school, we have that "Quarterm System" where it is three months per semester then one week semestral break then after that, another new semester is upon me.

Nice. Let us know when you get started then. I'm doing a computer science course, which involves a fair bit of programming.

You might want to head over to the Computer Science Crew at some point. I'm sure there will be people there, including myself, that can answer any questions you have regarding the subject and what the course will be like.

Awesome. I start sometime in September. Really looking forward to it!!! Apparently my course not only focuses on Windows programming, but Linux and IBM System i as well! :P It even says in the career description that, after I take this course, I can be a Software Developer and a Linux/UNIX Programmer!

For anyone curious as to the course I will be taking, here is the link.

:( You're going to be one of those guys taking my seats on the 196/106 bus then.

Cool club that I have seemingly been completely oblivious too. I am a second year English Major at York University in Toronto, and am currently considering taking on a Communications minor, though I sort of hate my intro Com. course at the moment.

My passion/dream lies in either Creative Writing or Journalism, or any form of writing really, but I plan on going for my honours BA, to ensure I am actually employable, before I go shooting for the stars. The bars and pubs of the world are populated with the dreams and aspirations of failed writers turned alcoholics.

Hey, nice work man - I'd be pretty damn happy with those results.

Just finished my summer break, which was nice and relaxing. I returned to my residential college on Wednesday, and after a hectic O-week, I've got my first day of Second-year Uni to look forward to tomorrow.

In seriousness, my timetable is relatively good, I start at 10am or later most days, which is definitely a plus.

I don't start second year until about September and I still have my second semester of first year exams to sit. There is one result I'm not looking forward to receiving, and that's the one for the Introduction to Computer Systems module. It seems to have gotten too complex and the notes we are provided with don't explain in enough detail. It's a tough one.

Currently, I don't start before 12pm on any day. Some days it's 1pm. On the downside there are days where I don't finish until 5pm, but I suppose it's not all that bad.

I've found the same thing in my classes. Right now I'm taking a class on Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals, which is pretty easy, but my Microelectronic circuit class is definitely something that I have to read the entire textbook for. There just isn't enough class time to discuss nearly enough in that class.

It's not a nice position to be in, especially since I think I'm going to get A's and B's for the rest of the modules. There is no final exam for this Computer Systems class, it's just tests every two weeks that get added up and produce a final grade. I'm just going to have to try my hardest and get my mark up in all of these tests. Of the two tests I've sat so far for this class, I've been 5% off a pass, and then exactly on the pass mark. I seriously need to be doing better than this.

I much prefer this method of testing. Obviously it is easier than just having two exams...gives you more chances to improve your grade as well.

Good luck...it's so hard to start improving your grade in a class when you start off not so well. You have to learn doubly now. All the stuff you should know, and the stuff you need to know as well.
