I dislike it because it's generally terrible.
Does it even have a fair amount of synths? I've never had it open for more than 5 minutes.

It's amazing for beginners and hobbyists - especially considering it comes free. Although it's more a stepping stone toward Logic Express and Logic Studio. (especially since Logic 8 when they rebuilt logic to behave like Garageband on Powerthirst)

I think it's utter shit, even if you're clever and manage to make something decent, the program can't handle it and freezes.

You can't record live instruments into FL like you can into Logic, though, can you?
I read about it somewhere you have to do a wierd little thing before it's possible, or something. I could never get it to work.

record live stuff in to cool edit pro/adobe audition - then import it into fl studio - not very hard - and much better results.

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen a garage band thread. I remember they were popular a while back.

Which means even more money. I'm not making an educated argument, here, so, yeah. I have no idea how much both FL and adobe audition/cool edit pro cost.
Mac ftw! :D Although I do prefer working with FL, if I'm 100% honest. But that is the only time I ever switch on my PC.

You can record live instruments in FL Studio. I've done it a couple of times, once with a guitar and a couple of times with a keyboard. As far as natural sounding instruments, you'd probably need a mic to do so. You can record things into FL Studio, it's just not as good as it would be with something meant for recording, which FL Studio is not. Adobe Audition, which is only good for sound editing and recording, could work, but if you want cheap you could use any sort of recording program and then clean it up in FL Studio.
Hell, theoretically speaking, you could record using Windows Recording or the built-in mic on the computer and then make it sound good in FL.

Ok there are too many things I'd have to quote from so I'm just gonna say what I have to say and be on my way... no that wasn't supposed to rhyme.
1. You CAN record into FL Studio....
2. Garage band is great for beginners and it does come with more synths and loops... kinda like Reason.
3. FL Studio is better than GB AND Reason because you can record Live and you can bring in VST instruemtns.
Yes I'm aware that the instruments and stuff FL give you off the bat arent' the hottest thigns.... and now not even that is completly true becaue the 3x Osc is a magical thing if you know how to use it. So are some of the synths they have as well.
If you look at my music page here, Mysterious Roots and Little Island were made in FL Studio.... with VST plugins of course. So I like FL as a host... not so much as an instrument.
Garage band is nice and pretty cool and very easy to use though I'll say that.
And also GB didn't freeze when I was using it. It all depends on youur computer.
FL Studio isn't the most stable thing with all VSTs but it's a HECK of a lot better than it used to be. I remember 4 and MAN... that was a hassle indeed. 8 is very good. Now I still say Cubase is still better but this isn't about that.
Garage band over all is a very good and fun program to use for hobbiest... but when you decide that you want more you either A, buy more sounds and synths for GB or B, get another DAW. (Digital Audio Workstation)
Ok I'm done.

Generally, I wouldn't use it, but it's a good starting step for those thinking of moving up to the Logic series, as Garageband is essentially an "Idiot's Guide to Logic". This is how we did it in my music class at school, using Garageband really helped with the transition to Logic.
Otherwise, I wouldn't use Garageband, it doesn't really have any advantages. Also, I don't have a Mac.

I've used garageband for about six months now and made some really amazing stuff with it (if I do say so myself XD). There are some things about it that irritate me, but it has never crashed on me. Ever. If it does, you need to buy a new mac.
Does it even have a fair amount of synths?
Some of the extra synths are in the downloadable pack, of course. But disregarding that, there are tons of synths in GB and you can design your own if you need more...which you should do anyways if you really want to make a more perfect piece.
Support a local composer. All you need to contribute is $10.00 per hour, for sixty years.
Or, you could just visit a profile page and rate/review stuff. Hint-ety hint hint.

Garageband is good. It has just as many features as any other program you have, but most of you lack the general intelligence to find them. the only feature (which isn't even important to my genre) that i haven't encountered yet is the ability to alter synths to a great extent.
Cheers.

Garageband is great for writing songs or recording ideas. It's perfect for people who don't want to hassle with big technical stuff like EQing, multiple Buses etc. and who just want to record something. I used it to make most of my songs, only recently did I change over to Logic Pro, just because things really did get a little more technical for me.
Garageband is great. It's free, it's cute, and you CAN get great results with it. It's Logic on narcotics.

i've used it a few times. and my first audio submission was made with it (a very early version too). But after seeing this thread...I think i may need to upgrade to a new music software if i wanna do the things i got in mind. O_o that or upgrade garageband on my computer. i've opened it up and i'm starting to work on a new song...tho finding the right pitch is hard as hell X_X. If anyone has any suggestions for good music apps for the mac, do tell me. I'll check keep toying with this thing anyway though. Its kinda fun. =)

Logic? :P It is kinda designed to be good for people who are upgrading from Garageband.
For midi, the pitch is shown on the left hand side. For audio, select your track and click on the icon on the left of the glass display. This'll bring up a menu - just select "Tuner" from the menu.

GarageBand is not necessarily duplo music.
I churn out some relatively high-quality music using GarageBand, and without the use of loops. It's a very decent production tool, and I can write pretty well in a comfortable, well-laid-out interface for which I pay nothing.
I say these things about my music in defense of the program's integrity, not out of conceit. In general, I consider myself more of a mediocrity.
But really, I don't like Magic GarageBand or Apple Loops any more than you guys, and I probably like them less, considering they reflect poorly on my program of choice.

Hmmm... I never knew selecting a line in on your mixer would be so hard? Just throw an instance of Edison on that mixer track and ka-fucking-bam!

Garageband is a sketchpad. It will record your ideas and save them until you can afford or learn to use more advanced techniques. It has all of the basics of a DAW and is incredibly simple to use, it just lacks the ability to produce a professional sounding product with anywhere near the efficiency of a Sonar, Cubase, or Pro Tools. Nothing wrong with it once you realize its limitations.
