Get the navy to suppy escort support. If the pirates attack then have the navy to distroy them. Piracy is still a crime punishable by death. Hang surviving pirates, and as it was done in the past, make the hangings public to where the pirates are from, and leave them on display with the sign 'pirate' on them.

For every ship? Enjoy having a navy a hundred time the size with none of the military capability.

Put together a multinational naval task force to patrol the area. A couple carriers, a few destroyers and lots of frigates. A few subs wouldn't hurt either. Send in the SEALS, ect to rescue the hostages. A well-coordinated military effort could put an end to this situation.

An international military response is starting.

The EU is sending security

It is now legal for security to follow them onto land, so pirates are no longer home free the second they touch land.

The US has begun a response to the situation.

None of these things will completely solve the problem, but many people on this thread have suggested military intervention. Military intervention is already starting.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought that was ridiculous. You'd think that from internet memes, pirates were just fantasy characters, but they're apparently still around. I didn't know this was such a big problem.

What's next, ninjas?

A pirate in the colloquial sense does not exist. The definition of a pirate is someone who robs ships. For everything in the world there are robbers. If it is on a ship it is a pirate. It is ridiculous to say that pirates don't exist.

Ninjas aren't common anymore because one heavily trained person with ninja weapons is inferior to a guy with an AK-47 with no training other then hearing "pull the trigger." (I am exaggerating here)

*sigh* you know people, I wanna point out two things:

1) This is not General, just because you've been trained by the internet and movies to think pirates don't really exist anymore isn't an excuse to act like a dumbass.

2) This forum does try to have some standards. So if you can't add anything intelligent and on topic to the discussion prepare for punishment.

All over the world ,most countries require the use of 'pilot's' to take ships in & out of harbors. To go through the Panama or Suez canal, you need a Pilot on board. Same with the St. Lawerence Seaway & the St. Lawerence river pilot's can be aboard for several days...& they ain't cheap.
So instead of Pilots for this area, have 2 or 3 man assault teams. ex armed forces...or even armed forces , arm them with rocket propelled grenades, those one shot 'Laws' rockets & high powered gattling gun style rifles.
Ships passing through these waters will then defend themselves.
Some may balk at the price of around a grand a day, but you only need them for a couple of days, there are lots of Mercenaries out there. Save your ship once & you save yourself millions of dollars.
Also once you start blowing these guy's to hell . It will become harder to recruit more. Not too mention taking out their boats & equipment will hamper them as well, there isn't alot of working boat yards, ship building facilities in Somalia

Just recently the EU and several other international groups began doing just that. Many merchant ships in the region are getting military escorts through Somali waters. I doubt this will create any meaningful permanent change, but it does offer temporary aid. As for this affecting pirate recruitment, I doubt it will make a difference. If there is enough money involved they will take the risk.
