I agree with you in that a) the original Halloween was revolutionary in many respects, and b) Rob Zombie USUALLY can't make a decent movie (I hated house of 1000 corpses and devil's rejects), but his work with Halloween but a new spin on the character of Michael Myers and filled a noticeable gap in the storyline which many viewers craved.
Plus, he tried to stay as close to the original depiction of Michael Myers as possible, while attempting to make him a more human and sympathetic character.
In the original Halloween, Myers just didn't have the same depth, and viewers were left with a scary boogeyman who they didn't understand and didn't really know much about. In the new Halloween, viewers now know the true backstory behind the monster, and even find themselves rooting for him in many respects.
