Saints Row 2 has a lot more activities and stuff you can do besides from the main story. GTA 4 has more missions and the city is larger, more elaborate, and feels more alive, the city in Saints row 2 feels more dull. In general GTA IV has better graphics. The multiplayer in GTA is imo a bit better than the one in Saints row 2 because it has more game modes.

Saints Row 2 has co-op for the main storyline. GTAIV also has co-op, but only for three online missions. I'd still get GTAIV first though, you may want to get Saints Row 2 later.
My PSN ID is xscoot. Crazy, huh?

Both I think. I know for a fact you can play online with each other, but I'm not sure about the split screen thing, as I've never tried it.
Anyway, SR2 has some nice cheats, modes, customization, etc. But the thing that I don't like about it are the tons of glitches you'll encounter during gameplay. One minute, I have an ally following me in a car, the next, the poor bastard dissapears.
GTA IV has a few glitches, but not many. Mostly late spawning objects, but thats something that you can easily ignore. Nice physics engine too, and not only euphoria, but the engine Rock Star made for the game (Car damage and stuff like that.). I would say buy GTA IV first, but that's if you're really into realizm.
Humanity's error.

GTA4 is way better than Saints Row 2. Lets see here.
#1: GTA4 has excellent graphics and sounds that are so realistic, as you said. The online multi-player modes are brilliant and there is lots of things to do. The storyline is great. It makes you wanna play the game more to find out the ending. The game might lag here and there, but it's definitely a pick up. I recommend this game over Saints Row 2.
#2: Saints Row is kinda cartoony with bad camera angles and cheap/corny fighting styles. If you like gangs and shit, this game is good for you.

The two really aren't comparable.
GTA4 is a much more mature and well developed game with outstanding graphics and wonderful online play. Playing this is sorta like watching Sopranos.
SR2 is silly, juvenile, cartoony and a LOT of fun. If dick jokes, ultraviolence, and tons of activities is your forte, it'd go with this. Playing this is sorta like watching Ren & Stimpy.
The two games are only similar in format, just like Mario and Contra are both sidescrollers. That is where the similarities end. Both are fantastic games, and if you can afford it I would suggest that you pick up both because they are two very different games.

SR2 is a fun game. Lots of stuff to do before, during and after the main missions. There is a lot of variety in activities and main missions.
GTA IV is too realistic to the point that it isn't fun. Missions are the same every time. Drive to destination, chase after person, kill people end. Most people will prefer GTA IV solely because of the title.

GTAIV has little to offer outside of the outstanding graphics. You'll notice that's the first thing everybody says about it... the story, supporting cast, and gameplay features fall after the superb graphics engine. That's not to say that it's a bad game... but that GTA is more about the 'look' and less about the 'fun'.
I don't want to bash GTA... it's a good game. But you need to realize that it's not as fun as other games on the market. There is no character customization, no house customization, no car customization... the mini-games are realistic and based around bowling or playing pool at a bar. The missions are realistic and requier you to spend a lot of time in empty warehouses and dark allies. The story is realistic and often times bland or just downright boring... it's like watching one of The Godfather movies. It's good if you like story but terrible if you like action.
It's definitly a good game and worth checking out, but if you have to make a decision it's improtant you ask yourself what you're looking for in a game. Do you want a more somber realistic experiance, or do you want some crazy action-packed wildness?
Saints Row 2 is anything but real. The graphics are great, but more cartoony and colors are sharper and more vibrant. The city is crazy and unrealistic and the supporting characters are about as sane as Charles Manson himself. Because of this, the game takes on a completly diffrent feel.
Missions require you to storm police stations and shoot up court houses durring important trials... you steal attack helicopters and blow up large sections of the city. Minigames revovle around stealing septic trucks and driving around town spraying feces on everything in sight or throwing yourself into on-comming traffic in order to claim insurance fraud.
it also features complete customization. You can choose everything... height, weight, color, sex, hair style, facial hair, the voice and accent your guy uses when he talks, the way he walks, the way he fights, the way he signals 'good job' to his friends and the way he tells his enemies to 'fuck off'. And they're pretty varied... everything from the middle finger to farting can be used. You also unlock more as you play minigames and take out gangs.
All cars are customizable and you can save cars previously customized for use at any time. If, after you save the car, you wreck it... you can just go to your garage and have one re-spawn for a small price. It's sillier and more fun then GTA... less real.
That's the catch though... nothing about Saints Row is real. There's not even the slightest hint that anything you do in this game could happen in real life. So really, it's not about what game is better... it's about what type of experiance you're looking for.
If you want something real... choose GTA
If you want violent, over the topy 'gangsta'-based cartoon chaos, choose Saints Row 2.
I prefered Saints Row... but then again, I hated GTA simply because I couldn't stand my fucking cusion calling me every 10 minutes asking me to go bowling. IT IS VERY VERY ANNOYING AND DENYING YOUR FRIENDS RESULTS IN A LOSS OF FRIENDSHIP POINTS WHICH MAY REMOVE IN GAME BONUS FEATUERS LIKE FREE CAB RIDES. If you want to keep your friends happy, you have to go bowling, play pool, catch a show, take a boat ride, etc...
I absolutly hated it and just thinking about it now makes me want to go shit on the game disk, then piss on it, then light it on fire.

GTA IV because they took out the multiplayer well most of the original fun stuff from the first one with saints row.

Actually, you cannot play SR2 on the same console. Co-op can only be done online, but you can do all the single-player missions and activities in co-op.
