Hello, everybody! I want to ask you all one thing: Have you ever had a confrontation with the law because of a rediculous policy, or been accused of doing something that was not actually illegal, in school? I ask that you refrain from telling us where you live, though. Me? Oh, I once told a teacher in a written assignment about a fatal security flaw, and drew a diagram for emphasis. Keep in mind, I was supposed to turn this in for her to read and knew that while writing it, and all I had happen was the officer in our school interrogated me, though had I really done anything illegal, I know I would have walked out of there in handcuffs.

I think this post belongs in General, but it's an interesting topic, so here's a story from when I was in high school:

In my junior year, we got a new principal, one that people still dislike to this day if conversations amongst the local Wendy's employees is to be believed. We had a tardyness problem in our school for a while, and big bad Princy comes up with a new policy: when the bell to begin class goes off, all the classroom doors will be closed and locked, and if you're late and lacking a written excuse, you won't be permitted into class and will be sent to "in-house" (detention). This got a lot of people butthurt and attemtping a walk-out, which failed, and we hated the principal ever since.

Man, am I glad I graduated.

During my freashman year, I was introduced to ip:// anonomizers which allowed us access to blocked web sites. Eventually the school caught on and made an announcement that the school handbook considers bypassing the school's web filter as "Computer Trespass" (in other wards if you get around the filter you are classified as a blackhat hacker who goes around destroying the internet planting viruses and stuff). The punishment for first offenders of "Computer Trespass" is: 10 days suspension, recommendation for expolsion to the county school board, possible alternative school placement, and referal to law enforcement.

You can get arrested for going to Newgrounds at my school on the charges of computer crimes.

The school I go to does not let you be bald for any reason. It goes against dress code. Now I don't care to be bald but one of my friends has cancer and is going through chemo and they constantly mark him for dress code violations. He tried to give them a doctor's note but they ripped it up.

That isnt right. You should make this more...public. Last time I checked, you couldnt boot someone out of school because of their medical condition.

This one time, in school, this girl was sucking some guy off in the hall. And this other time, two gay guys were assfucking in a bathroom. Also, every semester, the anatomy class dissects cats, and the class is right next to the cafeteria. And there was a chicken coop by the greenhouse until some Seniors let them out in a pep rally. Umm.... Oh, and some kid pulled out his contact lens, and the sucktion ripped out his retina. Hm... if you break any rules, either this big scary black lady will take a strapon and violate you in so many ways, or you'll have to sit around with an old man who is slowly losing his mind over the years.

Nothing to do with school policies, but then again this topic doesn't really belong in this forum.

In high school, sophomore year, 2 guys decided to try and intimidate the fat guy (me) when one wasn't paying attention i slugged em with my fist and his buddy ran away. I got suspended for starting a fight.

I call bullshit.

Now my school policy may be one of the most ridiculous ever. The school has a "locked door" tardy policy, if you're in the hall after the bell, you get a 3-hour detention. However, because of one fight between two kids (really an argument, only one punch was thrown, and at a locker,) the school has barred students from entering the school early. That means doors are not open until 5 minutes until first period. The school has 498 academic classrooms, spread over four floors, each with a quarter-mile of hallways. The school currently enrolls 5000, and as such, more than 200 kids have detentions every day.

What I have noticed in the Californian school system (it might be similar with others) is it segregates children very early according to whether or not they appear to be "smart" or not.

This means as early as middle school they will be segregated into an advanced class and a inferior class, with generally more kids in the inferior class than the advanced class.

This contrasts greatly from where I went to middle school, first Massachusetts and second Maryland. There everyone has to learn the same curriculum (which, in both states, are still more advanced than the advanced classes in California) with the exception of some students with learning disabilities who are allowed to go into remedial classes - these students are a vast minority.

This feeling of segregation and inferiority continues well into high school and is accepted by the kids who just essentially weren't given enough of a chance. I find it to be such bullshit.

I'll likely be held back for another year because they believe making foreign language class mandatory is a brilliant idea.

One dumb one at my school was a Staff Only Door, which the staff could use but the pupils couldn't, regardless of the weather. I always wondered how many cases of pneumonia could've been avoided...

There were countless dumb things: boys with pierced ears were only allowed to wear studs - which you had to cover with a plaster, if it was cold you could only wear a sweatshirt or jumper if it was black or grey, or hand it over (again, pneumonia), all boys toilets were locked after school whilst girls want (a friend of mine was suspended as he was dying for a piss, and had to go against the school gate or piss himself), I got a detention once as somebody punched me in the back of the head and I called him a motherfucker (swearing worse than random acts of violence?!?) - shit like that, in other words...

Lesse. . . Hanging out with my head in my female friend's laps = okay (I like to cuddle my friends) -- Holding my boyfriend's hand = 3-day suspension. Wearing make-up my freshman year - 10 days ISS, Two attempts to place me in jail for 'fights' where I threw no punches, and said no words, only got my ass kicked ( I eventually won the argument) -- Wearing a religious symbol that wasn't a cross - 2 weeks suspension, now the obviously didn't say it was -because- it wasn't a cross, but a huge amount of people wore crosses every day and never got in trouble (which is the only reason Iw as mad).

All but the first of those and the second 'fight' were freshman year, after that I got away with them, as well as only attending 30-50% of the days a year (I still had a 3.7 GPA mwahhaa), smoking on campus before and after my 18th birthday, various other little things apparently you guys can't get away with. Dunno what the hell was up their asses the first year, but I had a very loose minded school thereafter so whatever.

They showed us a video in our school about harassment policies (which of course everyone made fun of later, "the wind's harassing me"). And apparently it showed a story about a guy who called a girl ugly on one of those hot or not websites, and then it showed how she was hurt and all but then it showed the SCHOOL getting the kid in trouble for it.

I'm pretty sure the guy did it during his own private time away from school. I remember thinking this is gotta be the most BULLSHIT thing I have ever heard. I also remember thinking if I was in his shoes I'd sue the school.

Anyway my 6th grade middle school had some stupid policies, you had to keep your shirt tucked in all the time and whatnot and I have two stories about their stupid policies over doing it.

I thought this random kid was going to kick my friend off the bleachers, it looked that way but he was joking and I didn't realize it.
Anyway I told him that if you do that 'I'll kill you' in a usual tone.

He knew I wasn't serious but his friends told him he could get me in trouble for saying that so he did.

I told the school officials all this stuff and they still gave me the maximum sentence: suspension for X days (don't remember how long).

Then I was drawing a bomb in one class, not a real bomb, but a fake cartoony black circle with a fuse. Just doodles. They tried to get me in trouble for that but my Mom threatened to get a lawyer and they dropped it.

I've heard they loosened up a bit but I haven't heard anything about that school in a long time.

No kidding, either get a lawyer or get the media involved.

The bad press alone may make them change policy, and if not I'm sure the lawyer can pull something.

This year, new policy on the stairways. The left stairway is only for up direction while the right is only for down direction. New principle said it's for safety reason. Pretty bullshit and add more time to walk to class.

Yes we can't let kids be bumping into each other on the stairway. Think of the chaos that would unfold.

If I was him I would sue the school. That is something he has no control of so they shouldn't be able to write him up about it. As for them ripping up the doctor's note, that could get the school into deeper trouble.

Tell your friend to get a lawyer and sue the school, he would win, no doubt.

A subsititute teacher sent one of my freinds down to the office for wearnig a hat. Thing was, he was wearing religous headwear as he was Muslim. He came back in only five minutes, he didn't get in any trouble, but I still hate that substitue. we never saw her again. Not a policy, jsut stupidity on the teacher's part.

In a different school, there was a bomb threat. Instead of canceling school, they cancelled the dress-down day. Genius.

In my friend's school, backpacks are not allowed, as they could be used to carry weapons. I'd like to go there, take out a pistol filled with blanks, "shoot" the principal in the head and say "Notice how I don't have a backpack". It would probably backfire though. He'd probably just ban clothing. Hmm...

Well it's not illegal or anything, but it's still stupid and punishable via detention. My school recently became an Academy because the former school was basically underachieving. Now, (I'm in the recently added sixth form) they've basically made it taboo to mention the name of the previous school and I do know people who've been put into detention for it. Also, the canteen is now called the "refectory" and the library the "learning resources area".

It's political correctness gone mad.

This isn't so much of a policy but more of a system problem.

In 8th grade I was teased by our schools Running Back. I moved from a bigger city and this place was all small town crap. I joined the football team and played defense. But still the kid started with me. I told teachers and others about this because I knew how much trouble I'd get in for fighting. Then it turns out that his dad was friends with the principals. And the same thing happened to five other kids. I was outraged. Till finally I just got a schedule change. Then I moved.

Moral of the story:
Small town country schools are all about the buddy system and being connected since you were little.
