At 8/24/06 06:20 PM, Denvish wrote: I understand what you're saying, but the fact is, the list is confusing to the majority of newbs. It's got bloated, and is no longer as efficient as it could be in the purpose for which it was created. There's very little that hasn't been covered. There's also nothing to stop people from continuing to create tuts - if/when there's another incarnation of AS: Main, there's a good chance their work will be included.

Well, I do know what you mean. Infact, I've often asked myself: If I was totally new to Actionscript, and Flash, and I go into AS: Main looking for a tutorial, where the hell would I begin? And why am I using onClipEvent, what does that mean? Why do I have to make it a movie clip? Why can't I just do it from the actions panel?

But the truth is, you can't come in here being a complete idiot. You have to have some common sense, which too many newbs don't have and why this thread is basically getting locked.

I'd say the only thing that is semi-confusing is topic names. While they ARE categorized in skill order, they should possibly be categorized in the order of what you should do first, not just basic-advanced, but, for example, AS: Starting out, AS: Heiracrhy, AS: clip events, etc.

And then from there, maybe even a list of AS: Threads that are alike. AS: Platformers, and have several platform tutorials... AS: First person shooter, that could go with Inglors tutorials on score/health bars, and then even have related links within the tutorials, such as for loops, for multiple enemies, platformers could be related to while loops, for ground collision.

Basically, people can't follow categories well, and don't know what they are looking to do when they see the topic "AS: For loops"

If I looked at that and never heard of for loop, I wouldn't bother clicking it since I apparently don't need to learn about it for what I want to do, but really, it could be used for so much.

Lol, I AM agreeing with you, just making things clearer, for me, and others...

Response to As: Main 2006-08-24 18:37:39

*cry*

But to be fair this is the right thing to do, I still think this is the best actionscript resorse on the net and we desperatly need an asmain.com or similar to host these tutorials on....

It had to end anyway. Everything good does. Well, R.I.P. AS: Main.

Problem is, not everyone is comfortable learning in the same order. Some would start out with Replay Button > Animated Buttons > Quality Toggling, others would start out with Symbols > ClipEvent > Sound. That's just the nature of Flash and its versatility. I have considered trying to make it ordered like that in the past, but I just don't think it would work. You just have to hope that people can find what they need at the current time, based upon the link titles.

In all honesty, AS: Main doesn't work very good at all as a "Learning actionscript" guide, and I don't think it ever was meant to be. In my opinion, it shouldn't be linked to as such either.

It works best as a place where you can fetch a link to a relevant piece of info to work as a more advanced answer to one of those questions that are asked at least on a weekly basis. As such, it shouldn't have to be closed, but as it is now, it is probably for the better.

Yeah, that is very true also...

I guess it's best to lock it, I don't know, I just feel there is a way to keep it up, strong, and running... But I can't say that there aren't any reasons to have it locked for now...

Maybe we can change it one day, who knows. I personally like my Game Genre idea with Related Topics.

For example:

Platform/Side scrolling Game Tutorials (this is an easy and understandabe topic name
AS: Platformers
AS: Noob to Pro Platformer
AS: Side Scrolling games

Related Topics
AS: For loops
AS: While Loops
AS: Collisions

----------------------------------

That could work as well, seeing as how most people who come in here are looking to learn to make games...

So that is a possability in the future, is it not? I think it could work out well, but for now, I'll have to agree... I guess.

I'm sad that it's getting locked, but I guess I can't argue about why it shouldn't be. So, whatever's good =p

Well, excluding the basics. Anyone can link to _x and _y tutorial for anything, but for certain genres of games, specific tutorials are better for that genre than others. Maybe even explain why For Loops are used differently in FPS' to Platformers... who knows?

If we did buy an asmain.com, it should be more than one page, we could organise the tuts in loads of diferent ways, like what T_D was saying. We could have a platformer section, mouse avioder section, a basic 10 step guide to starting AS etc.

:However, I feel that, for now (until AS3 is officially released in its full form), there is no need for any more tutorials. Everything has been covered. People are starting to scrabble to find a topic that hasn't already been covered, and the quality is dropping as a result.

I would agree that the quality of the threads is beginning to drop but that's mostly because new users want to contribute to this great resource and they only way they know how is to write an AS: Thread on a single function. However, I strongly disagree that everything has been covered. Personally I was writing (I use that term loosely because I havn't gotten much done recently) two different AS threads.

The first was on a more sophisticated save and load feature that would allow the user to generate and save a file to their hard drive as well as load files into Flash at runtime. This uses PHP (and I thought I'd probably make a PHP: companion thread), but there is significantly more than what is covered in the current AS: Save and Load or AS: LoadVars tutorials. Also, I've seen probably 3 questions on the BBS this summer who would have benefited from this tutorial.

The second one was an advance collision detection tutorial where I was attempting to translate the complex N Tutorials into something that a normal Flash user could understand and use for advance collision response.

I also think there is a need for much better BitmapData class thread. As the title of it suggests, it was only an introduction to the capabilities of BitmapData.

There are also advanced Flash 8 classes that don't have such as the event broadcaster class which none of the as: threads mention.

In short, I understand what you mean by the list getting complicated for new users, but as others have mentioned this isn't intended to be an actionscript book where you can pick it up and just learn actionscript. It relies on more experienced users refering people to the applicable threads. A new user wouldn't know the name of the function they are looking for if it were on a 10 item list or a 100 item list. The more experienced user will know the name of the function and be able to find it easily because it's alphabetized.

In short, I don't think this should be locked.

Don't lock AS: Main. There are a lot more tutorials to be made!

I'm proof that AS: Main can work for noobs. I've never (Thats "Never ") Used another actionscript resource. I've never even used the help file. And I like to think I have a basic knowlegde of Actionscript. And It's all because of AS: Main.

Don't lock it.

Sorry if this has been suggested, but i aint readin 2 pages to find out.
How about you make a new topic, put the tutorial list in it (all 4 pages) and then lock it.
It would probably be less confusing for n00bs, as they would only see 4 posts, all full of tutorials.

Just a thought.

Unless it's really going to page 50 now.

AS:Terrain Based Platformer didn't get added either.

Anyway, unless this post is deemed among the two spammiest since the last list posting, I'd just like to say that it's been fun. And helpful. Whatever anyone says. A community effort like this is great for the forum, and even if I only got one tut in it's great to see how many of the regs here contributed.

It's sad to see this going down after over a year and a half, but hopefully AS3:Main will get started once Flash 9 is officially released (or even before), with someone who can be bothered to spare a few hours sleep a day to keep the list updated (lolluf <3).

Well, what I really want to say its; it's been emotional.
