I can really see both sides of the argument here although i don't know if it really did happen.
1. 9 (British government ((if involved))) the man is going to die know matter what we do and do we really gain much knowing that we killed him first? If we get a profit off of returning a man with an expiration date on his forehead why wouldn't we take it? Killing him would be useless to us in general and we can help ourselves by taking oil.\
2. (Outraged person) What!? You let him be a hero and live out a luxurious life rather than let him rot in a cold cell?! You sold out your convictions for oil and i have lost so much respect for you doing it.
honestly if it did happen that's what governments do and they only do it in the best intrest of the country and its people.
I'm catholic I'm skeptic of many things but of course one of the main reasons I'm unable to let go is one of everyone's: I cant accept death without there being something after it. I'd like to think that there is a god but he generally allows us to do what we want, imagine you are in a fight with a sibling your parents hope it will stop soon but they are pissed if they need to help. I completely understand not believing in god and many times I have a great deal of doubt myself in the end in comes down to having faith.
@TDwizBANG
I do understand that we are losing influence (and as a superpower only in military) but to say we are completely fading seems to be an overstatement. The bush presidency screwed us up pretty badly and a pointless war hurt our country in every way that I can think of. But I have high hopes in Obama and I trust that he can at least get the ball rolling in a lot of respects. I honestly feel like we need a recovery time and with some good luck in leadership we can get back.
I'm sorry if I sounded like an idiot with the one superpower thing the only reason I say only is I saw a GPS interview that addressed a man in the Chinese government who said that they weren't a superpower and Russia is only movie bad guys I don't really know much about their people and I'd like to learn more (unfortunately I'm lazy :P). "We let our country poor trillions of dollars into things that is very likely you will never touch" I have to trust that these things will end up helping us and honestly I have trust in government and think it is necessary. In addition every country has homeless and at the very least we have tried shelters to help them although many are too badly affected by their situation to be helped. Although I appreciate you kindness in your response and not calling me a noob idiot or the like since I'm new here and expected mean people...
In closing I'd like to say I'm really not all that idiotically optimistic (Sure were in a recession but hey we will get better by sheer force of will!) but I do believe that there is some good in every government although none are perfect. And that I'm not all this patriotic but I do think that America is at least an above average country in the world and would hope that it isn't always beaten up on. Finally I hope that I haven't offended anyone and if I have sorry.
Sorry for the double post i only wanted to apologize to adrshepard because he had a great post (much more intelligent than mine :P)
Do we make many mistakes... yes, do we have an idea that it is our job to for some reason police the world (I still cant believe the GOP's attitude to the election in Iran) but thing like this seem excessive. I don't personally think America is super amazing but it is one of the worlds top countries. We are a world hub of economy which in all honestly has been bad for the world when we crashed. But we are the most diverse country in the world which affects can negatively affect us. Also I think you don't look at military ranking as important enough, throughout history the country with the strongest military is the strongest if any country thought they could get away with taking out the U.S they would. Also topics like this show the U.S as one if not the most important countries in the world (very few people say Damn I hate: Uzbekistan, Madagascar, Algeria, Paraguay to name a few sorry if I offended anyone).
I am not a xenophobic but the U.S is arguably the only superpower (China is a tough call I say so but some say it isn't) and in so many ways severally flawed. But many people who don't live there and have never lived there find it fair to call us worthless, fat, stupid, and warmongering but it isn't fair to just say that. Sorry I went on this rant I just felt that there was no positive reasonable representation for America.
I'm not going to say that France is a great asset to the world and militarily they are no longer held in very high regard. Although no country is deserves to be destroyed for the mistakes that they have made in the past (and in some cases in history). I can understand a hatred for a country that badly hurt your own hey look at a lot of the countries we have "helped". Although the past needs to be left in the past and being caught up in history starts bad things. I really do understand where you are coming from but it is best to let go.
