If you want advice on improving hand drawings, draw your own hand observationally five times a day. Spend only 15 minutes on each drawing. Do not rush, but do work dilligently and aim to finish the drawing within the time limit. Once you can do that, reduce the time by 5 minutes, and again until you can draw your own hand in 5 minutes. Use different poses every time.

Drawing observationally is infinitely helpful for drawing from the mind. People underestimate this to no end all of the time.

Having sex one time just for the sake of not being a virgin will just fill you with regret later. Plus it's not even worth ti for a one night stand. You may have lost your virginity but you could go another 40 years without having sex again due to your poor outlook on life. I have never understood why losing your v-card was so important to people. It's not like you suddenly gain some profound happiness and accessibility to the finer things in life. You'd do much better to work out more, make yourself more attractive, practice being polite, and meet lots of new people. Preserve your dignity, avoid contracting a terminal illness, and do yourself and your self esteem a favor: get a real boyfriend or girlfriend.

Here's the thing, having widescreen TVs doesn't make a difference, the text still comes out small.
Are you sure? How does the text still come out small?

I can verify this. My girlfriend's brother has an HDTV and the text is still bullshit tiny. We have an SDTV and it's almost physically impossible to make out what some of the text says. It's better on HD but still generally tiny as hell.

The purpose of text is to be easily and readily readable. Its purpose is to convey information. Unless you are trying to cram a ton of text in a small space, or you are trying to maximize screen space to ridiculous extents, there is absolutely no reason to have such tiny text.

Skyrim on an SDTV is the dumbest thing ever.

Derp, sorry. Refreshed and it was there.

You have some interesting qualities going on in this one, but I agree with you.
- I like that you are giving your shadows temperature. All too often people treat shadows and highlights as just gray or white versions of the underlying color. I encourage you to explore this further.
- Some of your anatomy is off. The hands are a bit small - generally they should be almost as long as the face - and the character's left ear seems like it needs to be more on the side of her head than it is. Also your foreshortening is counter-intuitive on the arms - the one in the background seems slightly larger than the one in the foreground. The legs have the same problem. I know you are still just starting to explore foreshortening as you mentioned previously, so next time take a moment to consider which parts should be larger or smaller before doing the linework :).

Response to: Tablet Advice Posted January 15th, 2014 in Animation

Couple of points to make...

1) Most tablets (if not all tablets) have a customizable drawing area. No matter how large your tablet is, you can always shrink the area to fit your needs. Maybe not ideal, but this is good news for anyone who wants to experiment.

2) Larger tablet means finer line control. Sorry Potatoman, you are wrong here. Smaller tablets do however offer more dexterity due to smaller drawing area, but like I said, this is easy to change if you wish.

With that said, a larger tablet may not necessarily fix your brush problem. It seems to me that the inconsistencies you are experiencing are due to either poor pressure sensitivity, a damaged pen, or outdated drivers. I've experienced it before at the hands of the latter two.

As final advice, if you are in the market for a new drawing tablet and money isn't much of a concern, go with the larger one. You will have more control overall.

Response to: getting noticed on this website? Posted January 14th, 2014 in Audio

I'd say Atlas is most right with the "collab" suggestion. I may be wrong, but it doesn't seem like people come to Newgrounds solely for music. They want games or animations, and if they hear a sweet tune in a movie or something they are likely to at least take a look to see who it is by.

If price is a concern, Monoprice makes excellent tablets for under 60 dollars. You can get a 10x6.25 inch tablet with 1024 pressure for about 60 at Amazon. I would highly suggest it if you want the most space for your money.

I am using a Monoprice right now. It works just fine, has a bit of recognition lag but I suspect that may be my fault (haven't bothered to update the drivers).

Prior to this one I used a Genius Mousepen i608 - extremely cheap ($30-$50), 1024 levels of sensitivity, and honestly worked better than any Wacom I have ever used in a similar price range.

I recommend one of those two.

So, the link to the global game jam on the Newgrounds front page...

Does this mean there is some kind of NG participation? I know there have been game jams in the past that are showcased on the NG website. Is this just Tom announcing it so people can be informed? I would really love to participate in a game jam but I don't have much interest in game dev outside of Newgrounds at the moment.

Response to: How long do you take? Posted January 14th, 2014 in Art

I like to finish things in one shot, but I know as someone with academic training that the best pieces are not done this way. I know that personally I need 10 minimum for a "good" piece of art. I've spent upwards of 50 on some of my more ambitious projects. That's more than an entire full-time work week. This changes for everybody of course.

Generally, people in the art forum don't actually care what you're doing unless you have something to show for it. So basically, you should have waited until you actually had an attempt to post along with the thread.

I would go so far as to say most people in life feel the same way.

So here's a piece that was finished just yesterday as a gift to a good friend of mine named Slim Sadie. Being a sucker for retro-gaming and glowing things I figured it was only right to mix the two. Also, I tried a different method of coloring this than I usually would. I feel it was bit of an inadequate attempt, even if it was my first try. But, of course, there's always time to practice and improve. For the full size version of this piece you can take a peek at my profile. I hope you enjoy it!

Let me begin by saying that your friend has an excellent name.

Anyway, let me begin by stating your biggest flaw in this piece. The balance between the text and the rest of the image is not working. You should always treat your text just like you would any other element of your composition. As it stands, the "oops" draws all of my attention to the upper-left corner and distracts from the rest of the image.

Secondly, I am not quite sure how I feel about the meshing of the background and subject matter. On one hand, they do not stylistically, formally, or chromatically balance each other at all. On the other hand however, this provides an interesting effect that gives a sensation of depth.

Formally, your subject is interesting and well executed. It is very flat, but I suspect that is what you were going for. Compositionally I would like to see the main focus on the subject (the muzzle/snout) off-center a little bit. Just my opinion of course, different compositions work for different people.

Hay dewds,

Sweet collab yo. Sorry I bailed on you, glad to see it did so well. The UI really kicks ass, even more so than in the 24Fcollab. Great job and stuff. I also realized that my animation was kind of over-shooting for this collab and wouldn't have really fit in so in a way I'm glad that I didn't finish in time.

Pkmn - yours was my favorite!

I might be the odd one out here, but I love when crap like this happens. Especially when the power goes out, all the local businesses shut down, and you have to survive with what you have until it's over. It's a nice break from the monotony of life. Plus it looks pretty when everything is frozen.
I don't think you're odd. I like the dark ages feel of lighting candles, and the family using teamwork during power outages. It's probably the best thing that can happen. Especially when nobody has a cell phone. Technology has truly made us all stagnant, and useless. I was a far less bitter person before this whole "social networking" shit. I wish we could go back to the days of writing letters. It feels better getting a piece of mail, rather than an email. Emails, PM's, whatever you want to call them, take no effort. It's so impersonal.

Power outages, and shit weather make us remember that we are human. Otherwise, people sit around in a stupor looking at the bright flashing lights they call entertainment. I'm willing to bet that no kids today could sit around and tell stories, and keep each other entertained. I fucking miss people, and having real connections. They are all so wrapped up in stupid bullshit!

My friend Raven and I used to send a letter to each other at least once a year to keep each other updated on our lives. Haven't sent one in three years or so... Maybe I should do that...

I'm glad to see someone that shares my opinion so precisely. For the longest time I refused to get a cell phone because I didn't want to turn into one of "them", but I eventually succumbed.

I really think that the late 90's to early 2000's was the ideal balance of technology and human interaction. There was just enough innovation to make life more efficient and connect the world, but not enough to turn us all into mobile workstations of the cyborg overmind that is current-day society.

You know - I've been kind of depressed for the past year about life and the general state of the world, and I couldn't really figure out exactly why. I think this may be it. I think the world needs a global ice storm or low-impact apocalypse.

When I started socializing a lot and trying to make friends it just became tiresome and seemed like a worthless endeavor. Take from that what you will, and good luck :)

Response to: What exactly is Swag? Posted January 8th, 2014 in General

I am not sure of the legitimacy of this claim, but I read somewhere that SWAG used to be code for "Secretly, We Are Gay" and was used in the counter-culture era as a private way for homosexuals to essentially engage in prostitution (possessions given for sexual favors = swag).

In other news... The first year I moved to Central New York, there was an ice storm with a constant temperature of -20 degrees. Trees exploded spontaneously, water pipes burst everywhere, and if you had decent range when spitting vertically, you could watch your saliva freeze in mid-air and shatter on the ground. My entire county was a sheet of ice, and a state of emergency was declared for two weeks. Oh, and if you were outside for more than five minutes you were at major risk for frostbite. Fun stuff?

I know you want to make an FPS but if you want a unique idea, try making it more of a survival instead of a skill based shooter. Going off of Cyber's idea... The teacher could be trying to get kids to safety and have a gun with limited number of bullets, or something.
