Freedom. Have I experienced freedom? Sure I have. Land of the free, home of the brave, right? But I’ve experienced more than that… I’ve experienced my own freedom. Last summer, my best friend Chase and I, along with out older driving friend Andrew were FINALY given the go for a summer road trip. We didn’t need to go anywhere in particular. Just anywhere new! Anywhere where possibilities couldn’t just be counted on one hand. We needed “freedom”. And our parents understood… and they trusted us.
We each had saved up a hundred bucks for a two week drive. The plan was Michigan, and on the way, or once we got there, we could easily take a detour or change course as the humor struck us. We had freedom. A boat load of mountain dew and chips, sleeping bags and two fold up tents, along with other necessities such as tooth brushes and skateboards, and we where ready.
The drive started out like anytime driving with friends. A few jokes passed back a forth and cackling was ensued at the funny looking’ waitress at the Denny’s we stopped at. After the first night things started to heat up. We decided not to take the main highways through Wisconsin. Besides, we’d traveled those with our family numerous times, and there wasn’t much to experience on a long strip of concrete. So we passed through the smaller towns, viewing old trinket shops and taverns, forest preserves and with lakes and waterfalls. It may have not been backpacking though Europe, but the freedom was intoxicating.
Once in Michigan, A week had passed with all the stops we made, and gas money was running low, just as our parents anticipated… we used the emergency debit card, and trust me, we were more than willing to work it off once we got back, it was worth it.
Returning home was something we lightly considered not doing, but we knew better. It was great just to have those two weeks.
If I where to list all that we saw and said, It would take the very two weeks we spent seeing and saying it. The best way I can convey what I experienced to you is FREEDOM. Not freedom FROM anything, but freedom FOR anything. Just three guys, being guys, using our god-given sense of adventure… Yes… that’s a good way to describe it… adventure.
I hope it works out... I kinda like it
