It seems to me that your idea of how he is supposed to be is your best friend.

Though guess what, he is a whole person, and any single action of his in not any less him than the other. So you either accept him or you don't.

People come as integers, not like floats regardless of how you percieve them.

So half of the person can't be your best friend.

Response to: Humans can't evolve anymore. (rant) Posted January 29th, 2010 in General

At 1/29/10 12:56 PM, metalstorm wrote:
Not necessarily. Organisms don't just evolve for the sake of evolving. If there's no selection pressures or no need to evolve then the organism wont evolve. Unline humans, nature isnt inclined to fix what isnt broken.

So why do we have a different genotype from each other? Was there any selection pressure in that? Or in people with different shapes of eyebrows/whatever?

I guess the exception would be random genetic mutations which can sometimes result in what could be called a marginally more evolved human. i.e. someone who has normal human functionality but who also has some genetic advantage over the rest of the human population, much like this kid who is several times stronger than other kids his age due to the absence of a protein that inhibits muscle growth. This is a very rare phenomenon that only occurs in about 1 on every 1 billion people.

So you consider only stronger people the one who are truly taking part in evolution? And why do you call random genetic mutations an exception when no 2 persons are the same?
So would you consider people with sickle cell anemia as the ones more adapted or less? Would you still consider them weak when they will have the many simptoms but will be the only ones standing in an environment full of malaria?

On the flipside, the opposite mutation is seen to be muscular dystrpohy and it doesnt take a genius to realise that the incidence of that is quite a lot less that 1 in 1 billion and there is one very simple reason for this: medicine.

You blame medicine for the prevalence of muscular distrophy when genetic screening/testing has the potential to possibly completely eliminate it in the future.

So essentially, because of the negative selection pressures medicine places on evolution by allowinf the weak to survive and pass their crappy genes on to every one else, in 1000 years everyone will have muscular dystrophy and we'll all be fucked.

How can you call an adaptation negative? Nature does not take it in black and white, but the changes are always relative to the environment, theres no true negative adaptation, just one that worked for this moment.

Evolution does not mean changing form towards a highly intelectual, strong, handful person, however the movies depict people of former centuries who run through sunny forests and beautiful landscape, though it seems that many people imagine evolution to mean something similar when in fact we may all end up in some snail/crab/whatever shape if left enough time, be it with medicine or without.

But just how did you really decide on the change of gender? I mean, if you are a girl you feel like a girl and if you are a guy you feel like a guy, you just don't know any different, so how do you make the change and know the other gender will fit you better since there's just no way of trying that out? Cuz I can imagine a child seeing kids of the opposite gender playing with different toys and wanting to do the same, but why just not go and play with them? There isn't really as much of a difference in most activities you can do as a man or woman, now is it? Now yes sure there are some, but I can't imagine one I would change my gender for.
Hope I don't sound too rude, if you feel thats who you really are thats great, but im really not sure how you really begin the whole process?

Response to: Depression Posted January 25th, 2010 in General

how come you live in another country? maybe if you felt better back than there are some people you could write to and talk with?

about kissing a girl, i would suggest that you don't bother too much about that, since its not something you can plan to do. Just go over your past experience and see why you haven't done it, and if you see why you didn't you can resolve to do it when another chance comes by in the future, and even if you "fail" again, can assure yourself that you are working on that, so someday it will happen.

I would also suggest that you try not to indentify yourself to much with the person you used to be as opposed to the person people think you are now. Because that was in the past, and because only you can know yourself as well, you can work towards being viewed even as a greater person in the future. People can only come part the way of understanding you, so never bother too much about how people see you at the present, be it how you want it to be or not, it does not indicate that their view of you will hold in the future anyway.

That being said, its would probably be easiest to not resist your labels, and not to forcefully try and suggest that you are not "shy" as they see you, as people tend to get afraid if a person is changing their appearance/their percieved character of them so fast in can turn out to look hateful or similar because of that. Just be the person you know you are, but dont try to change their view too hard even when you know they are wrong. That way they will probably realize it anyway.

Also, try to not think of yourself as "depressed", since this will only worsen everything. If its being sad, happy, or feeling empty or without emotion realize thats just something you may feel right now, even if it feels that it is not changing. Dont lock your emotions in a single category.

School is probably getting harder for everyone since thats the way i remember it =P, but if you think its hard go through the things you find hard and try to deal with them one by one, and make the steps as small as possible. Teachers may be helpful in such situations, and dont give up if you come across one that doesnt seem like it (ont that is especially not helpful). Its their job to help you, but if you think they are not helpful go and ask a different teacher. And again, dont give up, even if you have to try many times for something you dont know if its even important or not. You have to give people a many chances before they can help you.

You already suggested some possibilities of what to do, so if you are interested in music really why not join a band. Otherwise you also don't need to just work on your interests but it may help to find new ones, think about what people do, and if there is something that you find interesting and wonder what would it feel to try out, go for it. Most activities that you are not used to may sound really crazy and even inaccessible, but it can be really rewarding to go and try something out and realize how much you really enjoy it - for me, i found it to be scuba diving and starting to learn for a private pilot licence, even though im not sure i will be able to do much of theese in the future. But go ahead, pick your own, if it sucks too bad you can still leave it anytime.

If you really think it may help, go and talk to the psychologist, since you may get some good tips there as well. But it really depends on the person, some find they get much out of it while some people talk to many before they believe the psychologist is getting helpful, so even if you go this way, never get discouraged too quickly. If you are unsure about going or not, maybe try and set a condition for yourself, like for example if you start feeling much worse and everyting else you try just doesnt seem to improve you will go.

Another thing would be - dont read to much literature on depression. While it may help, it may also give you examples how to beat yourself up more properly, so understand that if you read books or articles you may sometimes feel worse as you did before, not just better.

The last thing - try changing your environment, if theres a certain place where you feel especially down or happy, change it accordingly.

this would be my bit =P

Response to: Physics Question Posted January 25th, 2010 in General

i think i saw this problem first in an online MIT lecture, so he is either not doing it for school or he is at MIT; in that case he would probably know too much for me to even consider his posted problem...

Response to: Physics Question Posted January 25th, 2010 in General

the way i would imagine the situation would be:

The force applied to either of the strings would be:

F = (-) k x

where F is the force, k is the force constant and x is the distance of how much the length of the string changes when you apply the force (Hooke's law).

Now both strings are probably made of the same material, so k is the same for both.

So the string will break when a certain force is applied. And since the k is same for both you could further say that that the string will break when a certain change of length (x) is reached, which would be (again) the same for both strings. (even though the upper may have a little more "x" even in the begining, but this would be much less than what you will do with your hands force)

So when you pull on the lower string quickly, you are changing the length of the lower string depending on the velocity of your hand, while the upper string has a lag.

The lag would be caused by the mass.

Now remember, saying that the length of the string changes, or the force acting on it changes would be really saying something that would have the same effect (snapping), since both will cause the string to break. And from Newtons 2. law you know that:

F = m a

or force (F) is equal to mass (m) times acceletation (a).

Therefore the second string will be getting longer with the a changing speed (and roughly change of speed in time is acceletion, which is inversely proportionate to mass).

Therefore when you move fast, you will add length to the lower string proportionately with a velocity v, while the length of the upper one will need time to reach that velocity (since its accelerating). If there is little time, the upper will therefore change its length less and break later.

If you go slow on the other hand, the lower will feel a the force of your hand, while the upper will have the mass of the object added (therefore +F = m g (gravity)) to the force of the hand, and since they will be getting longer with the same velocity the upper one will break.
