Response to: Why is it illegal? Posted July 1st, 2010 in General

Only thing i ever heard from my parents is that if you smoke weed you end up on heroin.

Of which im quite sure is not true.

Only thing i ever heard from my school teachers was the ever "Drugs are bad, mmkay". They even showed those evil drugs to us, to "educate us".

Seriously.

Only thing i ever heard everywhere else:
X: "weed is bad"
Y: "alcohol is more bad"

So basically, i have no idea why it is prohibited and so does most of the world population, i suppose.

I think people should decide for themselves wheather they want to take part in such activities or not. No goverment is going to prevent you from doing plenty of other unhealthy stuff, and how do you know that people won't just overcompensate on another one and end up even worse off?

If the behavioral part is so hard to take, for example the 'people would drive while intoxicated', i guess the law could be that if a person has over a certain amount of alcohol/ any THC in his blood he should have a person who is responsible for him and watches over him while he isn't in a state to make some decisions himself. Like a friend and him could sign some simple form. Making alcohol legal and drunk driving illegal, even if there are expensive fines for it, can end up with a person who is unable to make sensible decisions making a decision about putting someone at risk of death.

But i do find some independent pieces really inspiring. Eg like those in the picture.

Also, Converse and DC shoes^^

I find very little information in the picture, maybe leave out some parts that are not blurry... It kinda reminds me of a picture that could be used as a background or an introduction (in an animation) to something more clear and detailed.

Also, his left shoulder is more broad than his his right one/i think his left hand spans to far out of the picture. The whole right part is also to much brush and to little form. Maybe try drawing at a resolution higher than the actual finished picture will be? That would also improve the "looks better far away" thing.

So if you printed it out, much of this would not matter since the viewer would adjust how far he stood from the picture by himself, but in digital art i think you should adjust that. Some of us use headphones connected to the computer and it sucks trying to look at it from afar^^

Response to: thoughts? Posted June 27th, 2010 in Art

I think it could use some more distinct features, details maybe, some kind of smaller focal point, otherwise the smaller text to the right lower part pulls as much attention as the whole person.

Response to: Which would you rather have? Posted June 26th, 2010 in General

Depends on how you define complexity. If it pays off after you master something, i don't mind it being complex. If it just seems to make no sense for no reason, than simplicity would be the logical choice.

Also, i can't think of why someone would prefer less options with the complexity remaining the same.

I am to poor/lazy and therefore use neither Windows nor Mac.

The problem with viruses on Windows is probably due to the fact that you can only have a certain number of installations. And it is true in computers, as is in real life, that anything that has to survive and be passed on/reproduce will have a harder time in an environment that is changing much. Therefore if you clean often, or, as would be relevant to computers, wipe certain information off often you will probably have and transmit less viruses.

Mac is probably slightly protected by it's artificial scarcity.

But every system has good and bad things to it, and those often change much, so for something one is better, but tommorow another one might be ahead due to improvement, or simply just because your expectations of it might change.

Response to: Ignorant Non-American Individuals Posted April 3rd, 2010 in General

Sure, I can only speak for myself, so lets forget about history and the media for a sec:

The first time i went to America, i was of course aware of the "Americans are fat" stereotype, which turned out to be false in such a way that most of Americans aren't overweight at all. But contrary to that, i saw some fattest people while staying there. When people are overweight in my country, they are never THAT overweight. I sure saw some people on the internet that were extremely fat, but only when going to America I realized that people so fat actually exist.

During my first stay (that was in California), i have not once met an American person who has heard of my country before, and I live in Europe. There was a single time when a person there actually claimed to have heard of it, but has later turned out that he was thinking about a different country. A majority of Asians and Europeans knew, though.

I was quite suprised by the American "we are free" propaganda. It may be rude, but the idea that America is a free country counts as a joke around here.

Some examples. When i was in California the person from the place i was staying at told me she was sorry if she seemed rude for not offering Champaigne, because offering alcohol to people that were not yet of legal age might get her into prison or something. In my country, a fetus could probably buy any alcohol in a store. Yes, its forbidden, but people just won't make a fuss about it. Same for cigaretes. I generally don't care about it because i don't drink or smoke and haven't done so before, but it shows the difference in attitude. If you are 9 years old and want to make a cake that needs rum for the aroma, you go to the store and get a bottle of rum around here. That simple.

During that time, i was told by people that it was forbidden for me to stay outside (by law) after 22.00. Seriously??

It was forbidden to cross a street anywhere but at an intersection. Again, wtf.

Not to forget, you are being talked to as a terrorist all the time when you go through customs. Do you Americans know that people who visit your country have to fill in a questionare, and have you ever read through it? It may be a reason why people who go to America are left with the impression that Americans are idiots. Let me sum some parts of it up, this were questions that have to be checked off even for a baby *in the year 2000+*:

Do you have connections with a terorist group? Y/N *i'm sure a potential terrorist will write a clear "yes " here*

Do you, or did you in 1940s, have connections with nazis in Germany? Y/N *omg what if that baby, who can't even read yet, or even small chi,d, were a nazi in the year 1945, gotta give him a questionare to prove he wasn't*

Did you understand this questionare? Y/N *sure one who won't understand the language will check off "no"*

During my stay at Las Vegas, i was being consistently thrown out of a casino for being half a year below the legal age. And getting moved from about 1 m on the inside, to 1m to the outside, was being considered as "not letting someone in". I could still see most of what was happening inside, 'cuz after all, i was quite rudely being moved for 2 meters away. And it was written all over that i'm in a free country, lets we forget.
And being alone on the street, when your parent were inside playing was considered just so much more safe.

During my stay in Hawaii, many tourist atractions had a rope line inbetween where you came in and where you were supposed to go out. Only walking around in one direction around that line was allowed, and you were reminded instantly if you walked 2 steps back in the wrong direction. That was supposedly to avoid terrorism. I was completely perplexed by a grown person explaining me that.

You were not alowed to leave a boat untill they got a 20 cm "bridge" to cross over.

In Miami me and my father got shouted at that "we will get killed" while crossing an empty highway, by the lady in the only car moving past.

Everywhere in America i ever went, it was full of stickers "watch your head/step/whatever". A sticker will most certainly prevent me from getting hurt somewhere, especially if the sticker is posted on nearly any surface in a room.

I can't say i hate America though. I have met many wonderfull people there, and alot of science discoveries came from there, for what i'm quite thankfull.

Response to: What do you think? Posted March 21st, 2010 in Art

My bit:

1. About "Predator":
I think you should decide on whether you want to draw more like a cartoon or a realistic drawing.

By choosing the first option i think you should outline more where two different parts of it meet, and vary the line. For example, in a place you want the viewer to look first maybe use a line that becomes thicker and than moves on thiner to a less important part. Or make the lines where the character is suposedly stronger also more thick and/or strong.

In the second option, i'd say give it more shape. Possibly study some simple object and see how its either square or round shape effects the tone, like when it shapes outward it usually gets lighter in color (when you draw it), and where it moves invard there is a shade and you should use a darker tone.

2. About "Alien":
I think the blood/fluid you drew is too consistent. If you splash a fluid anywhere, there will be a "focal point", which will take most of it and areas where there are few drops here and there, each drop a different length away from the center and each other.

Than about the blood/fluid dripping from its mouth - i think you drew the streams a length that is too much the same for each stream. I'd suggest you try to draw it in a way where it won't be possible to draw a line through where the streams cut of. Like if you tried to pour water from many different cups, it would be very hard to make them begin pouring and stop at the exact same moment. In your drawing i think this takes some of the realism away. The lower 3 are too much the same, and so are the upper 2. Each one should be a different length (but still proportional to Alien and the characteristic of the fluid). Huh, hope i make sense^^

Furthermore, the stream of liquid that is most to the left if you look at the drawing, is not ending vertically, which makes the viewer not sure in which way gravity is pulling. Even if you want to get an impression of Alien moving, you should still make all ends of a stream of a fluid point in the same direction.

And even if Alien just bit something/someone, i'd imagine the amount of the dripping fluid would be greater on its lower jaw. And on both jaws it would gather more around the gums than on the teeth. A drop of fluid will hardly ever be in the middle of one tooth.

About the 3rd stream of fluid from the left, i think it would look more real if it were curved towards the mouth (keeping the ending vertical though), since fluid, especially if its thick like blood, will try to go along the surface as long as the angle at the point where it falls off isn't too great.

I think i'll stop with talking about the fluid now, dunno, i guess i suggest you boy some shampoo or something and look how it moves and reflects the light.

About the color, i think i would actually prefer the first drawing. In the second picture it stands out too much (to the point of looking more unreal because of that), and in the first the tones seem to conform to the light and shade somehow better.

It would be nice if your drawing wouldn't be cut off by the paper/image edge.

Otherwise, keep up the good work, and i don't really mind even if you disagree with me about some points here =]

Response to: Being Vegetarian. Posted March 20th, 2010 in General

Strictly speaking about people who are vegetarian, I don't really mind, so we get along fine. Look for something that you could eat in the menu, and thats what we will all do and no one will be bothered by anything. Maybe it brings about talk about being vegetarian, but will happen so in a positive light. Even i occasinally get asked if im a vegetarian when i order a vegetarian dish, but it is just that i eat both meat and vegetables, and i don't mind the label in ordering food.

What you describe though, is what i would consider to be a kind of pickiness about food, which i find really annoying in other people, since it usually comes in a form of talking about some non existant substance or texture in food. What I despise about it is that people will order something in a restaurant and than whine about their food, usually not even tasting it. Or whining in a restaurant over a dish that someone orders but didn't know before what it was (even when the restaurant provided it just the way it is supposed to be) and than declaring the whole restaurant as bad or even evil and telling around how their food sucks, only doing so because of their own ignorance.

Maybe I sound old fashioned, but leaving all the food on the plate (or a particular kind that is a large part of the meal) without even tasting it for imaginary reasons sounds not as wasteful, as it shows disrespect to the fact they can afford food (when we know there are plenty of people in the world who can't) and as it shows disrespect to the cook or owner of the restaurant and the people around you who helped with the decision to go to a certain restaurant.

At 2/28/10 11:29 PM, kikomannnn wrote: Do you want to die alone?

You are alone only when you decide you are. You can be in a relationship and feel lonely. And it doesn't really matter what the other person might feel towards you. If you suddenly realize you are too alone, you go outside and talk to people. Yes, sure, unless you somehow get locked in syndrome. But even if you were in a relationship before, you will probably die alone.

And say you are in a relationship with a person where both actually love each other and feel loved and you grow old together but you die first. Doesn't that thought make you shiver even more because of the pain you will cause your loved person?

I spoke to that person the other day. She was by most views in a situation most of us wouldn't be too happy to be in, because she needed care and had no family to care for her. I asked her if she regrets things not turning out different, so she would be married. She said that it was one of the things she was most thankful for. Having had the chance for a great life while learning to deal with being alone sometimes, she felt sorry for the many so much worse off than her, since she was in a place where many people were in loving relationships before, but were torn apart for some reason, and now they felt even more alone and had great problems getting over it. Getting attached to a person for decades of your life and being torn appart, it happens to 50% of people in such a relationship. Not to forget, she felt she was important to other people. Life without a cliche valentine loving relationship can be great just like any other.

So i guess it depends how you really define love. The kind of love you see in movies? I have not experienced it. But love for activities and life in general? I guess yes. And having "only" friends? That depends on the definiton as well. I know i will do much when i will feel i can do something to make their life better.

And i wonder what part a religion plays here as well, see while Christianity is all about love and stuff a religion like Buddhism is so much about not getting attached to anything, which in this case makes for quite a difference in views.

One accusation and one supposition make your whole message.

How useful furniture is depends on the placement and if you really have use for it. If you place it somewhere where people are always comming through and/or get many people over often its useful, since guests will not sit down on the floor because they will probably think it would seem rude to you.

But i do agree that most people buy them when they are and will be completely unnecessary. Thats why they probably buy even more expensive ones in time; if it wasn't used, there must be a problem with the furniture - when it probably isn't.

When pets died suddenly, crying. When they run away, hoping they will return to this day, never really recognizing they will never come back, even as their lifespan should probably be over even in the best case. In the second option there is simply no moment when you can say "now they are gone forever", its all the same as the moment before that, and when they were just running away...

I found it horrible because i feel its wrong, they would inflict such pain on another person because of their belief that it looks better, even when the person subjected to the process probably wasn't really informed what exactly is about to happen. And to save them fearing the moment? Oh please.

@platypuspwn: comparing it with another video or process doesn't really make it any better.
