Topic: Flat File vs. Database Query

Posted: 03/28/04 10:56 AM

Forum: Programming

I'm just curious.
I think using a flat file to store static data is probably a very good idea for a very busy website (that is data driven).
For example, I beleive NG uses a flat file to store the daily top 5. This causes PHP to retreive the information from the flat file rather then make another db query, thus reducing the posibility of overloading connections to the db.

But I'm wondering on and Apples-to-Apples comparison, is a SQL query faster then reading flat file?

I would assume that if the flat file does not contain information that needs to be compared, then the relation database would be superior. But if you just wanted to read some variables, particularly if they were not very dynamic over time, then the flat file is superior.

I am asking because I would guess that NG has had to grapple with database issues, which is probably overshadowed by NGs bandwidth problems of the past.

Topic: rating system IP security (noob Q)

Posted: 11/12/03 06:36 PM

Forum: Programming

I want to create a rating system similar to what NG has, or what you would find on a site where you rate pics.
Using IP addresses is more secure then cookies, but I'm not sure how to store them in MySQL. I heard that MySQL does not store arrays, so you have to serialize() your array.

I can use my forum systems built in IP data for members, so that's not a problem.
My question is, what would be the mechanics of the storing and retrieving of IP addresses. I intend to store the IP addresses in the table containing all the info on that object to be rated, by the index ID number. In other words, if it was like NG, I would store IPs in a column on a table containing the data for that movie. But, does the php have to retreive all the IP addresses store before the current vote is made and then return the list with the new IP address appended?

Does anyone have any tips, or better yet, perhaps some lines of code from some of their projects that I can look at?

I think clockcrew things that they need drama to generate interest. I dunno if I agree with that, at all. I think all of this false chaos takes legitimacy away from the CC. It makes me sad.

This is all true. Zen, I agree fully. You will have to talk with the admins about it. I don't get why they just didn't cut the site down. The cash system was ridiculous. It was insane genius scripting, basically making the site way to awesome while using up too much bandwith. Clockcrew.cc may return again one day. Until then clockcrew.net is the clock's new home.

:(

I'm not joining anymore sites. I'll wait for cc.cc, if it ever comes back. I'm sick of checking 8 BBSs everyday.

"Basically, my understanding is:

The admins of clockcrew.cc were disgruntled with the work of the site, and were annoyed by the fact that they work so hard on a site that is frequented by idiots and spammers who contribute nothing to the community. They want to quit, but they have no good reason to pull the plug all of a sudden.

Then, Pint is drinking and becomes annoyed by some members of the cc.cc (particularly fbc), and is driven to deleting the cc.cc BBS posts and member archive. (please note, I'm not mad at all at pint, or for that matter, anyone).

This action serves as a catalyst for the Admin to quit. They have a good reason to; the sites gone!

Many users panic, being uninformed and being unable to go to the site that they like. Several assume the sites gone *or are pleased to finally have a reason to leave the CC*, and don't bother any further. Several need a well-managed and visually appealing community of sorts to live off of, so immidietly join the LL. The rest of us congregate in the Clock Crew backup sites. We have no admin, no senior members, basically no leader.

Basically, there was no conspiracy. No admins purposely ruining the site. No Anti-Clock plan to destroy the CC (anyone who take this that seriously to actually ruin the many peoples happiness that frequent the CC just because they dont like the idea of Clock flashes or something of that sort is a dumb shit and deserves to be beat). No conspiracy, just a mistake.

My opinion? Its just a community. You may think its more, but it really isnt. *Some of you make comments like "SBC is the king of the Portal" or "Hail king Stawberry." Thats all well and good for Flash movies or stories, but this community is not a game. There are more important things than jokes and games like that, and, although you may be trying to show your support, you really aren't helping.*

I know I personally don't have any real friends at the CC; frankly, I don't think most of you really know of me at all. However, and I think most of you will agree, the CC was a great community. I quite enjoyed going to cc.cc to share my opinion about anything, get some entertainment or be inspired to make flash. So without a site, the CC is nothing; you may keep the friends, you may try to make more clock movies, but it is otherwize gone. But you must remember, cc.net is no different from cc.cc. So those of you saying the Clock Crew is dead, well its very far from it. We are still a community, and we will continue to be a community. Sure, this site may need some improvements, and we may want to bring up the other site again, improve the CC a lot, and make it more of a flash community. But either way, we are still a community, one which I am happy and proud to be a part of."

Clockcrew.cc is dead. The Clock Crew is not dead though. Clockcrew.net is the new site. The admins of clockcrew.cc bailed because they are traitors and secretely loyal to the evil Lock Legion, lead by the evil CranberryLock.

Clockcrew.cc = Dead
Clockcrew.net = Alive
Clock Crew = Alive

I have a hard time swallowing that. I can certainly understand that the people who were responsible for running the site got fed up. I could see that comming. I don't know why the CC constantly insisted on customizing everything so much, and creating so much work for themselves.

There were times when I got tired of the spam, but the thing you have to understand is that it is a community. One of the primary forms of kickin back and chillin' with da homies is to lay a load of BS on yo brothas to show them da luv. What you consider spam others consider idle time entertainment.
On my forums, intra-member small talk is very common and not frowned upon. Granted, the copycat flood posts were detrimental, but I digress.

There's no reason to kill clockcrew.cc!

* Streamline the BBS system for lowbandwidth operation. (That's all the site was anyway, a BBS forum system)

* Put some emotionally stable admins and mods in charge, and but basically let the inmates run the assylum. Don't get all crotchedy with various behavior and don't put eveyrone under the microscope

* Get rid of the caste system. I enjoyed the idea of CC for flash but all the awards and concepts of community versus peons didn't seem right. Just let everyone be a clock (or non-clock participant)

* Get rid of the grand illusions. Just allow a simple community to grow and run itself. Hack the BBS with custom visuals if you desire, but stop scripting everything all to hell.

I'm would guess that not everyone knows what this is in reference to, but that's okay.
I submitted a movie in protest of something that wade did. There are some aspects to that message that I am still solid in my conviction of, and other things that I have been suprised and humbled about. However, the fact is that portions of my movie were disrespectful to Wade. So, for that, I am apologizing.
Sorry Wade.
He and I were both quite confused about various aspects of the situation, but I have to commend him for not doing what most people would do if they had seen what I submitted. Wade did not fly off and over-react, or take it too personally (even though some of it was insulting).
The misunderstanding is behind us, and I have a new found respect for Wade in the process.

90% time/effort = drawing cartoon/comic book style scene with character in similar style. Both remain static afterward.

5% time/effort = draw movieclips of mouth and eye changes.

3% time/effort = record female friend, then record yourself and stretch/pitch your voice to 50%.

2% time/effort = motiontween a little cat (oh, I'm sorry, it's a different small mammal) around the scene.

I have portal entry 50,000 and I developed a game for 100,00, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping to get lucky enough in my timing.

I have noticed that suddenly the portal is skipping numbers. I don't know why. I just did a refresh, after less than 60 seconds and the next submission jumped over an entry number. That was wayy to fast for it to have been blammed. I hope the portal doesn't skip 100,000

That is an absolute oxymoron. Atleast, if you take it in the context that anything deemed "inappropriate" should not be displayed.
What you are saying is that you have the right to free speech but you don't have the rights to free speech when those who have appointed themselves official judges of "inappropriate" have cast their OPINIONS and silence speech.

You people just don't understand.

I don't know whether these guys are racist or not, but I honestly tend to think that they are not.

What you just don't understand is that sometimes, people seek out something offensive to test their rights and freedoms to express yourself in this country, and to fish out those people who would try to silence you.

Theres a strange phenomenon in flash, that also exists in music. When you make a flash or write a song, people don't give you nearly the artistic leeway to express something that they would when you make a work of fiction such as a movie or written story. When it's obvious fiction, even under the flag of entertainment, people give you credit for challenging them and shocking them into feeling and thinking new things, even when what they are seeing would seem outrageous in real life.

Sometimes, I get the urge to make something to shock people....something to offend them. Not because I want to attack the audience. Also, not because I want to attack whatever it is I might use in my work to shock and offend. It is because sometimes I feel like the ultimate for of expression is to challenge those who would attempt to quite your freedom to express yourself.

Fortunately for all parties involved, I do not chose to partake in my urge to express myself in this manner, because no offense to 'SpamBeGone', but, I know my imagination, and what you are complaining about is nothing on a scale of offensiveness to what I could stir up if I desired to.

It's not the act of taking offense that makes you wrong. It's the act of attempting to silence people who are not hurting you, that is wrong. Sometimes, people like Spambegone like to troll for people who would silence free people. While I think it's not fair to trivialize the attrocities committed during world war two by the nazis with such anologies, if I had to say someone is exercising facist nazism, it's the book burners who want to control the information and who is allowed to speak.
