There are shows that I think are far better. Arrested development isn't necessarily over rated, but I wouldn't choose it over a show like Dexter or Grey's Anatomy in most situations.

So it mostly comes down to the art, direction, and characters. They actually did a great job with Spike by making him a deep character with the ability to weave action. He's a complicated character. I do like to watch Spike's internal struggle with Vicious more so than Light and Ls. With Light its hard to feel what he's feeling or relate to him, you're even forced into siding with him when he kills Naomi Misora and Raye Pember. If you're looking for likable characters Cowboy Bebop is the better choice.

It is obvious that both Cowboy Bebop and Death Note capture original ideas. In questioning what that idea is, we have to examine both separately, correct?
With Death Note, this question is difficult to answer, but the show does continuously focus on a central story, making it much more like a single movie that plays through cohesively with overarching ideas that lead to a central climax and singular ending. While Cowboy Bebop has some cohesion thoughout, it focuses more on individual stories that show off the hardships and misadventures that the characters go through. Much like Joss Whedon's Firefly, there are arching themes, but not much of an actual arching story. Right?
So without writing a research paper, I'm just going to continue to write some positives and negatives for both:
Cowboy Bebop
1. It came First
2. the Characters are arguable more likable
3. It is gritty, but not as emotionally visceral Death Note, so you can arguable enjoy it more for its sci-fi aspects, but not as much as a show that will pull on our human emotions.
Death Note
1. It is new with a clean style.
2. It engages the viewer, by constantly provoking thought and throws curve balls with perfect timing.
3. I feel like watching it. :)
Overall, I would find it hard to deny that Death Note is better.
I dunno. I just think they're cool n stuff. I had one as pet once. They can be a lot of fun but the BK rats are the best.
