Actually...I just go with my feelings. "Feelings" might not be the right word..."instinct" might be better. I know each character has their own vibes and I just go with that. Drawing for me personally is not science and rules, so I don't really use the methods you mentioned. (Man, this is really vague >u>;;;)

Here's my take on The Empress and Temperance.
I stayed pretty close with the original idea for The Empress, but for Temperance I went for something different. Temperance is a primary virtue for the craftsmen after all, and restraint does call for some strength.
Also I really want to draw a hard-working man XD
