It's looking really good! Only thing that's slightly bothering me are the simple gradients on the links and the live updates, they don't fit very well with the background and banner I think. But that's just me.

There're probably better ways to do it than that exact example, though. For a start you could cut down on library size by just using sine to plot the smoke's motion instead of that shape tween, and could probably draw the smoke with script as well.

I'm sure someone with a little knowledge of AS can come up with something better, I can't :)

Thanks to both of you :) The smoke effect is an AS2 script I found here. In my opinion it looks better than fbf'ed smoke and it's much faster to implement.

Yes I already said that. Read next time.

Woohoo take it easy pal, ever considered the fact that perhaps I started typing my post before yours was posted? It's only 2 minutes, it happens all the time. Chill.

You don't have to do it with Actionscript, you can also tween the movieclip. In one keyframe the alpha of the movieclip would be 100 and in the other 0 (visa versa). Just motion tween it and you have the same effect. You can find the alpha setting of the movieclip in the properties tab.

Textures in Flash

I've been messing around with textures a lot with the animation I'm working on right now. I was wondering how it affects the filesize. I have 4 different bitmaps that I plan to combine with each other to create lot's of different surfaces, I wondered if the filesize shoots up every time I use the bitmaps as a fill, or does it simply load them once so it wouldn't be a very big problem with larger movies? I don't know how to write it more clearly, sorry.

Anyway, here it is, it's already 600 kbs... What do you think?

Purely depends on your own preference, and what movie style you're after. I think widescreen animations are gaining a lot of popularity these days.

You're using CS3 aren't you? I think the problem is that you're working on an Actionscript 3 file, while the V-cam is programmed in AS2. You can start an AS2 instead of an AS3 from the opening window. I think that's your problem.

I was told this morning that one of my best friends from elementary school got killed in a car crash. I hadn't spoken or even seen the guy for years, but sometimes you just wonder what former classmates are doing, where they live etc. He would have been a guy I'd be happy to talk to during a reunion, catch up on what he's been doing the past years. Not anymore I guess. It must be hard for people to lose their loved ones during the holiday season, I wonder if you can celebrate Christmas the way you used to ever again... I know I'll be more careful in traffic from now on, getting killed in a car crash without being able to have any influence on the outcome is a shitty way to go.

My camera can film at both 24 and 30 fps, maybe yours has that option as well. If it doesn't one solution to your problem is to just skip a frame every now and then, every fifth frame probably, I doubt anyone will notice that in the finished animation.

New Year's Resolution

Although I despise new year's resolutions, I think I'll force my self to pick up a sport again in 08. My current lifestyle is too unhealthy. Oh, and I also want to submit a new animation next year, it's been too long since I last finished something portal-worthy.

Haha, for some reason I found that amusing.

In Holland we have Sinterklaas on the 5th of december. It's pretty similar to Christmas, Sinterklaas is also an old guy with a beard dressed in red, although Sinterklaas rides on a horse and has black people as helpers instead of elves (I'm not kidding there). Here, the 5th of december is the day people give each other presents, although Christmas seems to gain popularity. Almost all people just celebrate both days, so does my family, although we don't give each other presents on Christmas, it's usually more about having fancy diners with the entire family.

lol... I haven't heard about it... copyright issues nowadays.... At least "hohoho" isn't something people would like to say as much as "Merry Christmas" and I'd still like to know the issues.

They didn't do it because of copyright stuff, they thought people would confuse hohoho with hoes as in prostitutes, or so I've read. Please let it be a joke.

After some investigation: Some sites say it's a myth, some say it isn't. Apparently some australian rent-a-santa-company changed hohoho to hahaha because hohoho would offend women...

1) Itd be impossible to trace it as good as it looked
2) There are some perts that he made
3) DONT ASSUME THINGS!

1) That's not impossible, it's just time consuming. All you need to do is import the video, set it on a background layer, and trace it frame by frame. Tracing that clip is no big deal. Also, if you think rationally it must strike you the resemblances, the timing and the composition in both clips are virtually the same. He mixed up the different shots so it looks a little different but it's basically the same.

2) If by parts he made you mean the rotating character that zooms out, it's just a tween. The rest of it seems to be in the original footage.

3) I'm might be assuming something, but at least I look at the facts first. I am not accusing him of tracing the Kakashi animation. I'm trying to back up my statement of the Naruto Collab animation being traced with facts. That's all.

I suggest you animate something really specific, and not naruto related. Also show us how much you know about timing and spacing. you should be near expert if that wasn't traced.

If I really wanted to dig through my naruto clipsI'm sure I'd find this scene, but it's too much effort.

Also any REAL animator would be more than eager to disprove these claims, while you just kind of blow them off.
Ok this is getting annoying! Try and read the other posts before assuming things. I think ive already proven its not traced. By the fbf version and by showing sevaiis submission in the naruto collab!

My first thought when I saw this is that it is traced. And if it is, it's still an awesome piece of work, tracing still is a tedious job. However, since this is getting a little out of hand I did some research, his scene for the naruto collab is traced. Of course that doesn't mean the kakashi thing is traced, but is very likely. If it isn't, it looks great and I'm sorry.

I agree that mature movies shouldn't be featured on the frontpage, since NG is accessible for people over 13 years old, some of the material is inappropriate for kids that age. Maybe there should be some sort of frontpage or 'recent hits selection' for the mature section, or maybe a big red 'Mature Content' warning on the frontpage listings would do the trick.

From an animators point of view Zone-Sama's work is quite brilliant by the way, she puts the same amount of work in her animations as any other good animator. Submissions like those do deserve to be featured somewhere on this site.
