The main character from Shadow of the Colossus was infamous for being undefined and mysterious. I'm guessing the creators focused on epic boss battles first, story last, which tends to be the trend for every single video game. They want to sell a game. If people wanted a story, they could buy a movie, and for a lot cheaper, too.
