Doofy, I agree completely.

I mean, come on! I started this topic for an awesome idea, and two of you (NO NAMES MENTIONED) turned it into a flame war about underage Newgrounders! WTF?

Okay, I'm getting pissed off. This topic was meant for ideas and templates concerning the Programming Crew. Now everyone SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE.

Glad to see more people on board (again :P).

Here are my personal thoughts on the project.

1.) XHTML, CSS, Javascript. But not too much Javascript...that can be annoying.
2.) PHP is the most widely known server-side language...I'd prefer to work with it since it's the only one I know, and I'd really like to do some coding.

And that's about all I can think of now...

It's a slight, slight chance, but in the early stages the regulars decided against relating this with Newgrounds. I mean, maybe some publicity would be cool, but things like the name "ProgrammingGrounds" were vetoed pretty fast.

I figured it was time to start this again, as some people started talking about it in another thread.

If some of you people don't know, a long time ago, a bunch of Programming regulars talked about creating a site full of tutorials in pretty much every language there is. It got a bunch of momentum...then kinda died out of nowhere...

If you look around long enough, you may be able to find the topics that started it all, but they're pretty much dead now.

This topic can act as a sign up list and a discussion thread. There have been a few regulars showing intrest recently, so hopefully this will attract their attention. This project seems like it could turn out very large, as long as the ball gets rolling...and keeps rolling.

I liked the design near the end of this topic (just to get something going)...

And, in case anyone wasn't here and wonders, I'm not just doing this randomly. I kinda started the idea in the first place :)

At 7/22/06 11:50 PM, Tigiot wrote: What exactly do you mean by topic return? Where is it returning the to the topic from?

From the process page that takes the info from newtopic.php and puts it into the database, along with a non-set number as the topic id. That's why I was getting confused of what to do, as I didn't know how to get that number. It's just a number that's placed in sequence in the database.

It's a good type suggestions for returning to the thread someone replied to, but I already have a method for that. This is a new topic return, so it wouldn't be that easy.

No, I'm pretty fluent in MySQL, I just needed a function or two.

Now, by pretty fluent, I don't mean I have nothing more to learn. Just want to make that clear to anyone...

Amazing. Exactly what I needed.

Thanks for the help, I'll start on the coding and stuff later tonight, most likely. If I have any problems that I spend longer than a half an hour on...I'll come back here :)

Thanks again, both of you helped me out great.

That makes sense.

If that works, then I only have one more problem. How am I going to send the user back to the new topic they just made? The id column is auto-increment, so I have no set variable to send them back to. Of course, I can get the most recent topic right after the query, but is there a chance that can bring up another post if the queries happen at exactly the same time (hypothetical, i know, but it could happen).

NGARC stands for Newgrounds Amatuer Radio Club. If you are involved in amatuer (ham) radio, this is the place to be!

There is only one requirement for entry. You must have an issued lisence to brodcast on amatuer radio with a callsign.

If you haven't heard of ham radio, you can visit Hello-Radio.org, and if it seems like something you would be interested in, there's bound to be a test in your area. You can find out about testing locations and studying for the test at ARRL.org.

I'm not sure exactly how big this club will be...or even if there are going to be any replies...but I hope Newgrounds has at least a few other ham operators!

The point of an amatuer radio club is to talk with other hams about anything ham radio related, and even other things that aren't. It's just a place where ham operators can get together and chat.

There are two rules. Don't flame, and try as hard as humanly possible to make intelligent posts.

Now that the club intro is done, I will give my introduction. I am KC0YDT. I just got my Technician no-code two weeks ago, and I'm studying up on CW, General, and Extra Class. I'm hoping to get the vanity call sign WO0GIE...but I don't know if the FCC would allow it. It is in the right format, right? :)

That's what I thought...that's why I wanted to figure a different way...

To your second question, just select posts made in a topic, and order by the id of that post, or the date.

Ah, but then how do I get the most recent? And how do I make that change which topic gets put first, when my topics table is separate?

So, I know everyone and their brother is trying to code a forum...but I am too, and I've got a question or two for someone relatively experienced.

I have a way of processing the new topic page that is definitely sub-par. It's a little lengthy and some of the coding is probably useless. The only problem is...I can't think of another way to do it. I have a seperate table for topic data apart from my posts (in the MySQL). I figured that would be the easiest way to do it...but now I see that I'm horribly, horribly wrong. Is there a function I can use to create the topic in the posts database, while still keeping the post ID auto-increment?

And the next question would definitely be answered by that answer...how can i automatically move the most recently posted topic to the top? I figure that could be done by the same general code.

I think that's all I have for now.

It's easy, use the isset() and empty() functions.

if (empty($var)) {
echo "There's like nothing there!";
} elseif (isset($var)) {
echo "There's something there!";
}
